This says it all. There really is no rational reason to upgrade each year these days. Half us still do it because we're addicts, but the differences from phone to phone are not big.
I have a friend with a iPhone X, And he's finally upgrading because he needs the storage space. But he said his iPX works fine without issues for him.

Aside from the form factor, I can't find a reason to upgrade to the 12 Pro Max. I dont want to spend $700 (after trade-in) just to hold the phone differently.

Are there any improvements that I'm missing? The camera is essentially the same and the screen is the same. No FaceID improvements. Battery life is worse.

I am not bashing the 12 Pro, but am looking to help justify a purchase I dont think I need to make
Do like me and wait for the iPhone 12 pro max which will have a 47% larger sensor and much better camera quality and battery. My wife has the 12 pro, I have the 11 pro Max. The camera quality is exactly the same except for F/1.6 on the 12 pro. They both have the same sensor and image quality. However the HDR mode on the 12 pro might be a little bit better, not by much.
