The other thing about AppleCare is that it covers the headphones and charging cables as well. For some reason my Apple branded lightning cable seem to fail somewhat regularly. It's always the same pin that turns black and stops working. I run with my iPhone and sometimes the headphones go bad, although that seemed to happen more often with the older round style than with the newer EarPods. I've replaced quite a few of those under app,e care as well. I think the lightning cables run about $20, so if I replace two of them over the course of the two year warranty, the effective cost of the warranty is only $50. It's definitely not for everyone, but I find the peace of mind I get from having apple care to be well worth the cost.

I still have original lightning cables from my iPhone 5 purchase. If you go through wires that much then you're mistreating them. They don't just fail regularly on their own if you handle them properly.

I have no idea why it happens to them. It's only the apple branded ones. I certainly don't baby them, but I also don't do anything out of the ordinary with them either. They all stay plugged into the wall/car cig lighter all the time. For some reason, one of the pins always turns black. It only happens on the apple branded cables, not on the Anker or amazon ones that I use. Even if I am 'mistreating' them, the replacement is covered under the AppleCare warranty, so I'm comfortable with using them how I do.

Weird, I never had any of mine turn black.
Unless they fall on the floor, get in contact with moisture and turn black by burning/shorting out is my logical guess.

If the cable or charger go bad, you simply call 1-800-My-iPhone and they ship you a new one, you put your old one in the packaging and it has a prepaid label. You have to give them a credit card in case you don't return the defective ones.

Basically an apples vs. oranges type of thing.
It's an apples vs. oranges kind of thing to compare health insurance to homeowner's insurance too.
[doublepost=1489465244][/doublepost]
Different levels of importance, impact, scale, etc.
Of course my health insurance is more important than AC+, lol!! Thanks for pointing out the obvious.

The more important insurances also cost a helluva a lot more. My health insurance costs me $40/day. AC+ costs me 18 cents per day.

There you go. Fairly different things in various ways.

HA! This thread was referenced in another one about AppleCare+ Insurance is a good buy if you can't afford, or prefer not to, self insure. Vehicle insurance? Some states, not all, require liability. Have a loan? Comprehensive required to protect the lean holder. Home insurance? Only the mortgage company will require it. If you can afford to rebuild after a fire or other situation and want to be out 10s or hundreds of thousands $, so be it.

I tend not to do extended warranties on things I can fix. If I bought a PC, I can replace the motherboard or any other component. Laptop? Nope - and with the heat generated they tend to fail. Small device like an iPhone or iPad, Apple Watch sure, I'll get it. Though I can self insure, I prefer not to.

Glad you included a pic, OP or we may not have believed you LOL!

Famous last words.....there but for the grace of god go you. Hope you never experience an accident. Must be wonderful knowing you are infallable.

if there was a god, i'm sure he (no capital H) would have stopped the millions of phones from being damaged.

I don't see how this is showing Apple going above and beyond.
Applecare+ covers accidental damage which this was.
If the OP hadn't found his phone on the freeway Apple wouldn't have done a thing for him. Or if they had then THAT would have shown Apple going the extra mile.

Wow, $1200 a month for healthcare?
Do you have Obamacare? :D

If the device is broken as bad where it not repairable and cannot be refurbished they dont have to replace it.
They did go the extra mile for him and also gave him a free leather case that is not covered under Applecare plus.
I know some of you find all these things that Apple does for their customers no big deal but try to ask for the same service from Samsung, Motorola, Nokia or any other cell phone manufacturer and see how far you'll get, how much you'll wait, the repair or replacement you might get, the amount of hassle you will go through and amount of shipping you might have to pay and wait and many other inconveniences.
And then compare to what the OP had to do is just walk into his Local Apple store and get a new replacement and a free case along with amazing service.
They did go the extra mile.
Replacing a lost device or anyone claiming they lost their device and getting another one for free is not going the extra mile. Its abusing their good service and definitely not something they cover since Apple care Plus is not lost/stolen theft insurance.

Aren't (Apple) accessories covered by AppleCare+ anyway?

No, 3rd party accessories such as cases or car chargers or anything that is not included in your phone box is not covered via Applecare Plus.

If I had Obamacare, I wouldn't be paying $1.2k per month for my health insurance.

I know, I feel you bud. :D
With Obamacare if you're on welfare or completely broke you dont pay anything per month and you have zero deductible for Dr visits and free prescriptions.
If you make some money or have any assets then its completely un-affordable and you basically pay for all the others that are getting it for free. That's why premiums went up by 100-300% in some cases.
And if you decide to say no thanks I dont want any of it you have to pay thousands in fines because you are forced to purchase something that you might not want or need.

I did something really stupid - I left my iPhone 7+ on the roof of my car and it fell off in the middle of the road right before getting on the freeway. By the time I realized it was my phone that fell and got back to where it happened, my phone had been run over multiple times and was completely destroyed (showed up as 'inactive' on Find My iPhone). I had an Apple Leather case on it and it was a goner too.

The phone was really hot (almost too hot to hold) for about an hour so I let it cool down before going to the Apple Store by me. No appointment and they took care of me right away. $99 to replace under AppleCare and they even replaced my case too (free of charge). I was in/out in less than 30 minutes with a brand new phone. Customer service like that keeps me a happy Apple customer!

This is why we need to go back to BUSHCARE....that was the greatest program.....BTW...I have paid $2000 a month for auto insurance for the last 40 years = $80,000...never had a claim...never got a dime back....Nationstar mortgage owns my home...but they get me to pay for home owner insurance to protect THERE investment.

We all have wasted tons of money on various insurances. Don't remind me:D

I have never heard that and don't think that is accurate. The only thing in the T&C that I can find that they could refuse is this:

http://www.apple.com/legal/sales-support/applecare/applecareplus/docs/applecareplusnaen.html

ADH coverage does not include

(a) protection against normal wear and tear, theft, misplacement, damages caused by reckless, abusive, willful or intentional conduct associated with handling and use of the Covered Device,

But setting your phone on your hood and forgetting about it wouldn't be reckless or intentional. Juggling with your iPhone or something crazy like that may be reckless.

My health insurance went up 40% in one year after Obamacare. Then another 30% the next year.

If someone is paying $14,400 per year for liability auto insurance, then they must have had a DUI or a ton of speeding tickets or wrecks that were their fault.

Only liability coverage is mandatory.
[doublepost=1489537572][/doublepost]

They get coverage if they maim or kill someone when they speed or drive drunk, which they had a history of or they wouldn't be paying over $14k/year in liabliity auto insurance.

The OP didn't state where he got his case. A quote from the T&C's:

"The Plan covers the Apple-branded iPhone, iPad, iPod or Apple Watch and the Apple-branded accessories contained in its original packaging (“Covered Device”) listed on your proof of coverage document (“Plan Confirmation”).

So - if he bought the case, and it was an Apple case, at the time he purchased his phone, there is a great chance the case would be considered covered and thus replaced with the phone. The OP didn't state if the case was an Apple case and if he bought it at the time he bought his phone. I wonder if that was the case.

Yes, a lot of ifs. :)
I use a good credit card that has 90 days of theft coverage and adds 2 years to the devices manufacturers warranty. And all that for free. If something happens within those 3 years I'm good;)

I think you meant $2000 per year.:D
40 years then it's $80k.
Insurance is a scam.
When it comes to take care of a big claim they will do their best to deny it or find ways and reasons not to pay you.
