I don't need insurance because I follow some basic rules with my iPhone.

Rule #1. If my phone is not in my hand, it is in my pocket.

Rule #2. If my phone is not in my pocket, it is in my hand.

Rule #3. The only time the iPhone isn't in my pocket or my hand is when it is plugged into the charger at home.

It is dumb not to follow these rules. There is no reason to set your phone ON TOP OF A CAR. When you are at a restaurant eating, don't set it on the table. You are asking to forget it or have something spill on it. (iPhone 7 takes care of the spills though). The worst one.... leave on a urinal while going pee. YUCK!

Not everyone is logical like you and I.

Attaining insurance isn't always about what the insured may do, or fail to do. Often times, it is about what others may do that are unforeseen.

While the OP made a mistake that you and others may see as foolish, don't be so quick to climb up on your high horse lest you forget you have made mistakes in life as well. Unfortunately, it is part of the human condition no matter how smart and logical we may deem ourselves to be at times.

Rule 1. You can fall down while the phone is in your pocket. You can accidentally bump into something that you didn't see, or be pushed into an object by other person(s) that damages your phone.

Rule 2. You can accidentally drop your phone (for a variety of reasons) thus causing damage to the phone.

Your so called rules are not immune to the human condition of yourself or others. Until you can post some rules that are above such, your rules, for the purposes of posting them here do nothing more than show the myopic view they were posted with.

The OP could clearly make the case, that he placed the phone on the top of the car, so that he wouldn't risk damaging it by having to do whatever it was that prompted him to place the phone on the car. The OP doing what he did, in and of itself is not act that can readily be deemed foolish, in my opinion.

Well... I have owned every iPhone since 2007. I have never carried insurance on my iPhone. I have never cracked my screen. Never even dropped it. Never water damaged. So yes... I think I was quite successful in minimizing risk to my device following the rules.

You have been fortunate thus far. You made a declarative statement that denigrated the OP and others who make such mistakes. And I pointed out the error of your thinking. Saying you haven't had any accidents thus far does not validate your statement for all, nor does it make others stupid if they don't follow such rules.

Well said. And I've been paying for car insurance for 20+ years and never needed a penny back. But last year I was in a wreck where my car insurance saved me over $10K. Being careful doesn't negate the need for insurance because you can only control so much and accidents do happen no matter how careful you are.

I agree.
But its all a risk and reward ratio that you have to take into consideration.
Im sure nobody wants to be stuck with paying $10k in damages out of pocket or a totaled paid off $30K vehicle gone.
But when it comes to a cracked screen for $129 that's not such high risk to take and especially if you have a good case on or never had any prior incidents before. Chances are you'd be fine not paying $99 for additional coverage on your cellphone;)

I'm not dumb enough to break my phone. It's for clumsy people. I've owned every iPhone since the first gen and haven't even cracked a screen.

Never knew I was dumb for accidentally cracking "breaking" a few screens "phone". I guess being dumb has made me pretty successful! oh and I wouldn't change it for the world!
