Hmm,

I wish it was also a tad bit wider than just that 2 inch wide.

Put it this way, what would fill a female or male up better that comes equipped on every male, a long but skinny tool (Chris Brown) or a long and thicker private part (Shane Diesel)?

Length is not where it count most, thickness is more satisfying!

:D

Yeah, because people's dick size preferences directly reflect their phone size preferences... #logicfail

The new front panel has 1.5cm above and below the screen. That's fairly small. I could see why you might want to reduce that a little but the difference would be minimal, wouldn't it? ...

I think we can go too far in reducing bezels. Bezels on flat screen TVs and all that, sure, we don't need them. But on portable devices you have to have some place to grip.
The shorter 1.54 cm bezel in the leaked new part is the same size as the current bezel in the iPod touch.

Not a big deal.

That does demonstrate how nicely the new screen will work for many functions but I think it also shows why the bezels had to remain a certain minimum thickness. On that device they look too thin and the home button is tiny!

True - I don't mind at all that the new iPhone will be slightly taller (unlike the mock up I linked to) so that the bezels are a manageable size.

Fingerprints. Who wants photos or videos of iPhones full of fingerprints?

I've seen photos of Foxconn workers wearing these types of finger gloves so I can't help wondering if the use was meant to make as recall such photos and make the video seem more legit, more like yes this was smuggled out by a line worker etc

Precisely. Smaller to reduce the overall size but still a decent size for das ergonomicz!

The New iPhone
or
iPhone 4GS

GS for good-sized screen
GS for great screen
GS for giant screen

No, because I hear people call it the "4GS" all the time as it is... People are really not smart. I actually heard some random people talking the other day about how the "iPhone 5GS" was coming out soon and an update on their "iPhone 4GS" would allow them to connect to the new "5GS" speeds. Oh and the new "iPhone 5GS" would be bigger and have a 3D screen... Smh... You can't fix stupid with a smartphone.

So if this is the size of the next iPhone then I need to ask...why would anyone with a 4S want it?

LTE is not enough of a reason. And there is nothing else new to sway buyers.

If you have a 3 series phone ok, a 4 maybe....

I sure hope this is not the new iphone.

Then why would Tim Cook say that Apple is
going to double down on secrecy. He also said that they would go to any measures to secure future products. As far as I'm concerned, this is drastic measures. It's genius. We'll just see on September 12th. I'm writing your name down

If it was Apple that leaked this "new design", the purpose was to gets us talking about it during the time it takes to release it. Giving them free publicity in a large variety of websites.

With the above line, you can see this in two ways:

  • Either Apple leaked this so could get us accustomed to this model, getting it "printed" on our heads.
  • Or Apple is just throwing everybody off, so we still talk about it but releases a different model.

I believe in the first option, according to Apple past records. But nothing is easily predictable, so it's just a guess, based on past events, that can be wrong.

Either way, they got what they wanted. Everybody is talking about the leaked photos, videos, etc..
And, like Apple has always done, this leak was on purpose. Just like the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S etc etc. It's a marketing process and Apple is quite good in promotion and reach out.

But hey.. just my opinion :p

Nope that's not how it works... Otherwise the iPhone 3G would be called the iPhone 2 and the iPhone 4S would have been called the iPhone 5, but there not.

I can understand them calling it The New iPhone but there is nothing wrong with calling it the iPhone 5. It doesn't have to mean the 5th iPhone released.

You mean "The new iPhone" or "iPhone 6". The 5th one came out last year.

You know, you're right. I only buy a new phone if it LOOKS different, so I guess I shouldn't.

*LTE is totally worth it (in the US at least - I don't know about elsewhere)
*Larger screen
*Faster processor
*Better camera
*Potentially NFC
*If you have a 4, but not a 4s, you get Siri, turn-by-turn nav, flyover, etc.
*Probably something else that none of us have even thought of yet.

I have a 4S and I'm very likely a buyer. LTE in fact, is almost enough of a reason, but add in the larger display (even if it's just slightly larger), the potential with NFC/Passbook, likely improved cameras, more scratch resistant glass, thinner form factor, "better" display tech, etc.

It's a nice incremental upgrade.

It's not different than asking why anyone with a 997C4S would want a 991C4S. It's going to cost more, it's only incrementally better performance, it has most of the same styling queues (a typical Porsche evolution of their brand icon).

but watch next year when they stretch this new version out sideways to make it more along the lines of those phones everyone will say it's amazing...

I not supposed to be telling this but my best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with this girl that found a prototype at 31 Flavors that proves that the next iPhone is going to be the size of the Nano. It was in a bag with some papers about how they want everyone to buy iPads for surfing the web etc so the next iPhone will just be a phone. There was also a prototype for the new Apple iGlasses with built in pov cam and Bluetooth earpieces.

Must be pretty serious

----------

You have a point about the signature. But I'll bring up one more point: patent infringement. If Apple strays away from that signature look, the Android suits would be all over it.

Not at all. The previous infringement against the designs would still stand or fall on its own merits. A design patent doesn't mean you can never have another design or it voids the patent

It's that reason I don't agree that this leak is the next iPhone, a prototype maybe but the ratio's, layout etc all very unlike Jony Ive designs. Apple love golden ratios and this stretched look just doesn't sit right and that's before you look at details of camera placement in glass bands on rear etc.

Personally I don't mind the idea of a larger screen, but I really like the current size of the iPhone. I wouldn't mind the size incerasing slightly, but to do so by changing to a less aesthetically pleasing (for me) longer profile would lead me to steer clear.

I'm sure it'd still sell fabulously either way though, and apple HAVE had products that are long and thin (iPod nano 1g and 2g) and short and squat (iPod nano 3g) in the past, so who knows!

Beyond that, my next iPhone will be either the 4 or 4S in white anyway.

Look on the boxes your iPhones came in. Look at the backs of the iPhones you currently own. NONE of them say anything more than just "iPhone" on them. It will be iPhone and they will differentiate them just like they do the laptops and desktops. It will be iPhone (late 2012). If they want to get more granular they will also do like they do on their other systems. I am currently typing this on a MacPro3,1 for instance. My iPhone is model MC137LL.

First iPhone i'll skip with no hesitation.

Did you own every other iteration? So you went from a 4 to a 4S, even though the FF/display didn't change?

Just curious about the reasoning behind someone who went 4->4S but are saying (even before the release of the device), they won't even consider 4S->"new" iPhone.

I really think a 4:3 screen ratio would be better on the iPhone, but if they had to give it this 16:9 ratio, couldn't they have kept the phone the same height and used the empty space that currently exists on the iPhone to fit the screen?

If they shrunk the home button by 0.3mm (and perhaps move it down a little), plus use the space above the home button and under the earpiece on the current iPhone, wouldn't that be close to 4inches, without elongating the whole device?
Also by making it a little thinner, this would be a nicer phone than this "supposed iPhone 5", in my humble opinion...I am no designer (of phones)

Better battery life
  • The longer body allows for more battery room.
  • Even though the screen is larger, it likely utilizes in-cell technology and IGZO transistors, significantly reducing power consumption and needed backlight strength for a given brightness.
  • Opting for the 32nm A5 as a possible SoC choice may offset LTE and then some, if included. Anandtech tests show the 32nm A5 in the refreshed iPad 2 gives significant extended battery life.

Larger screen
  • Many people simply want a larger screen and will buy because of that.
  • 16:9 ratio means watching movies and youtube videos is better because letterboxing is smaller.
  • The screen is likely to be better overall. With the thinner glass and in-cell technology, the space between the display and glass reduces, making it seem like you're more directly touching the screen.

New Design
  • Many people are not fans of the glass back due to durability concerns. Back is no longer glass.
  • Screen seems stronger, if video is true.
  • Many people have been clamoring for a metal back again. Wish granted.
  • Headphone jack on bottom. Makes more sense from a usability standpoint.
  • New dock connector. Smaller and supposedly flippable.

Potential new features
  • LTE seems pretty certain.
  • NFC for wireless payments a possibility.
  • other unknowns?

SoC change

Apple can either go lower power with a 32nm A5 to save power and provide the same level of performance or introduce a new SoC to boost performance. Quad A9 is possible but seems unlikely. Dual A15 is possible but it's a bit early, but would be significantly faster still. 1 GB RAM seems likely, which many people have been clamoring for.

So, there's plenty to look forward to, even for 4S owners.

Imagine if this whole thing was a controlled intense leak by Tim. Somehow I doubt it, but man it would be fun if it was.

This is what I'm hoping for. Tim will start off the keynote introducing the "new" iPhone and it's slightly taller frame and what not. After the booing settles down, then he'll be like, "Great, that's what we thought too. Here's the REAL new iPhone for ya"

If not, I'm really not digging this taller iPhone 4 design. Just not feeling it.

I can't see myself upgrading to this. :(

I have a 4 and was looking forward to upgrading last year, but the 4s is just too similar.

This very modest screen size change comes at the expense of making it look worse.

LTE coverage is mediocre in my area.

Developers will still be optimizing for the single core A4 for at least another year, so I won't miss out on apps.

NFC will be nice, but that will take a while to roll out, I doubt that will be useful for another year.

So, I'm left waiting ANOTHER year to upgrade...or moving to something like an S3.

EDIT: I forgot...I have no use for Siri, I already have Dragon Search...and it's nice, but I find myself using it only to show off the feature, usually I just type the search in.

Also, the new connector would be a pain as I have docks I regularly use and now would need adapters.

Oh, and one more: my big complaint with the 4 is that it isn't as nice to hold as the 3GS was. The 4s and now this new long phone do nothing to improve that.
