This is how we get reduced security. People will go back to no passcode instead. FaceID is solving a nonexistant problem.

People are going to be unlocking this thing with pictures within 24 hours.

Have you not been following the rumours? Do you honestly think that Apple will let a photo unlock the phone? It boggles my mind how people think that Apple hasn't thought of obvious simple things such as this. It's called 'advanced' facial recognition for a reason. Samsung this isn't.

If using Face ID for payment, how do you prevent accidental payment? With touch ID, as long as your thumb isn't on the home button, the payment won't go through.

Im also wondering how close to the camera the face needs to be. I know it's been reported it will recognize the face while laying flat, but here are many times when paying with ApplePay, that the phone is no where near my face.

Persistent critics are looking for reasons to find fault so they miss obvious solutions to problems that Apple will have corrected. It's confirmation bias.

I wonder if it works like the surface or if instead if it actually works. I grow facial hair. I wear glasses and hats. I tan. Do I have to register every combination of those?

I'm in the camp of viewing FaceID as a huge step back relative to TouchID.

I'll echo another post in saying that this feature is attempting to resolve a problem that was never there.

Much appears to be lost with the removal of the Home button just for some extra screen real estate; making the iPhone experience much more complicated than it needs to be.

We'll have to wait and see if this new step in direction is a good one in real world use.

Though for now it doesn't seem very promising.

There's been countless rumours and photos of there being multiple sensors on the front, articles about how it will have advanced 3D depth scanning, Kuo stating it will be so advanced that it will be two years ahead of any other phone out there, Apple being confident enough with it to drop TouchID entirely... and yet you get people thinking a photo would bypass it? Apple, a company that prides itself on privacy and takes it seriously? Some people can be so short-sighted that it is infuriating to say the least.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the beginning of handheld VR. (Being able to scan oneself into a digital storage system).

Like people saying things like “sometimes I use touchID in the dark... guess I won’t be doing THAT anymore”

People can open your phone with Touch ID while you're sleeping.

True, but the person would need to make physical contact with the phone.

Unless you're a very heavy sleeper, odds are you're going to notice/wake up if someone tries to unlock the phone.

We'll have to wait and see how exactly FaceID will work, but for this example it's just one of the many examples I've seen as to why FaceID is much less secure/complicated than TouchID.

I reach into my pocket and unlock my phone before it ever gets to my face. This is a step backward.

I don't understand this argument. You can't see your phone when it's in your pocket anyway thus being unable to interact with it? You look at your phone when you want to use it right? Which FaceID will do in milliseconds, even from acute angles.

But it’s not as you don’t yet know it will be able to be unlocked by a sleeping face. Maybe, but maybe not.

Be nice if he tried it with a non-brazilian apple id and see if an apple pay option showed up then....

How do I stop the police getting me to unlock my phone, currently if I use the wrong finger enough times it needs a passcode which I have forgotten, I can't change my face while the police have me in restraint

Smart criminals and paranoid citizens should stick with the iPhone SE

Turn your phone off or click the sleep/wake button 5 times

It's a 3D scanner. A photo is 2D.

There it was, didn't look over at the overly white thingy; strange that you'll have to open settings, this should be in the update process if you upgrade from ios 10, and in the set-up if you buy it new. It probably is, but strange that Macrumors makes it seem like you must open up settings to set up face-id

Not sure if you’re being serious with all your questions, but.. it should be kinda obvious. The new iPhone will only come with iOS 11. Why would it be on the iOS 11 upgrade screen when anyone who has that will not have this feature? This is only for if you skip it initially, same as TouchID.

Just waiting for some smartarse to get a picture and 3D printer to beat the software .

Just press the "side" button five times or whatever combination it will be and boom, Face ID deactivated. iOS 11 betas have already confirmed that that's what happens for Touch ID and you're required to use the Passcode. And since under current US law, law enforcement can't compel you to unlock with a Passcode, voilà!

Disclaimer: I'm no US lawyer, know only what I've read online and don't even know whether this is a Fourth or Fifth Amendment issue, so take this with a grain of salt.

EDIT: MrX8503 beat me to it!

Another question .. what if your phone is on the desk and you're busy but you don't want it to unlock
Gee - rather than speculate how bout we breathe and take a wait and see attitude shall we?

that's the whole point of being on a rumours website though!
