I like shine, gloss, and skeumorphism. I hope they don't bollocks this up just to pander to the kiddie generation.

Here's a quickie version of a flat Safari icon I did.

I like that mockup. My issue is not the interface, just how slow it can be to get to stuff (turn off LTE for example). Also, no documents repository so I can attach files to an email. No way to change default apps. No way to snooze a calendar event.

I am not leaving iOS anytime soon, if ever...but update the underlying foundation in some way.

I'm excited about this update because iOS6 has been so buggy. Every version of it has some major security flaw. And Yes, Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 is extremely flat design, flatter than OSX. The only thing that's flatter would probably be Okudagram. That's because stuff like Aero was just pure aesthetics, and ended up costing more processing power. The flat design is probably a move to improve battery life as a whole.

It will be very much in keeping with Apple if they release a flat mobile OS, just like Windows and Android and everyone else these days, but then claim they have invented a new level of flatness that is superior to everyone else's flatness.

Apple will then patent flatness and sue everyone else for flat UI.

Honestly if Apple wants to be revolutionary bring back glass buttons and at least look different than all their competition.

Geeze, if this is Apple's idea of innovation, to duplicate other people's design trends now, its game over.

Did you really just psych yourself up? Preparing yourself to hate Apple? Dude, get a life!

If you make a device with flat design thinner, does that make it fat? :p

Took me forever to find this image again, but this is really sexy:

About Time!!!!

"The article notes that Apple has looked at ideas to implement new panels with swipes from the left and the right of the screen, much like how the Notification Center currently drops from above."

It's about MF'ing time!!!!

I think you'll find most users have been seeking OS X on the iPad since it was first launched.. Hence we wouldn't need iOS on OS X. Fingers crossed OS XI can bring them both together in a better way than M$ did with Win 8.

Most users on this board? Yes.

Most users in the wild? No.

In fact, it seems fairly obvious that the general population are in love with iPads and buying them in record numbers instead of traditional PCs because they are not traditional PCs with traditional OSes.

Just design? Or some new function too?

All this talk about flat design... but I hope there is some new functionality too.

I'd love a new homescreen. A new first page where you can put different things... widgets if you want to call them that. Surely the smart guys at Apple can think of something.

And every other page can be the normal "pages of apps"

Or even just expand the function of the drop-down notification panel. Something. Copy it from Android, whatever, I want WIFI and GPS toggles easily found.

I'm just afraid that Mr. Ive will be making "prettier" icons... but I want some new functionality.

I started thinking about this after Facebook home was announced. That word... "HOME"

Why is the first page of my iPhone the same as every other page?

Seems like you could put some more stuff there.

I'm looking forward to seeing iOS 7. The software design is below the hardware level. I have high hopes now that Jony Ive is responsible for both.

I just hope they haven't forgotten about usability considering the size of the task they are already taken on. At least give us the option to turn off auto-correct.

My dad, who is 68, recently purchased an iPhone and I received about a dozen calls within the first five minutes on how to use the phone.

For starters, there is no instruction manual of sorts included with the iPhone and so you have to rely upon "ease of use" to use it. Unfortunately, many of the things my father was looking for was buried deep within the iOS.

I think, besides a cosmetics update, the main structure of iOS needs fine tuning. Too many windows or clicks to get to what you need or you find its spread across several areas and not centralized.

It would be nice to have a central page with widgets for information you constantly are checking or need instead of having to click on repeated apps to find that information. Also, the ability to multi task or have two apps open on the same screen would be very helpful. Its difficult flipping back and forth when trying to find and type in phone numbers, links, etc.

The iPhone is BY FAR the easiest phone to use. There are no difficulties in doing things as iOS stands right now. Inconveniences? Yeah.

Both of my parents who are literally the most tech illiterate people in the world can use the iPhone without my help 99.9% of the time. It's easy for them because everything they might need in terms of settings will be in the setting. Notifications? Swipe down for notification center. Contacts? In the contacts app. Sure it may be easier for us to have a widget of our settings, and you may think it would be easier for your dad, but it probably wouldn't.

Your dad was simply just new to iOS and needed help to figure out where things are. Once he has learned the basics, it all falls into place rather easy.

I know this is all speculation as of now, but I'm loving the sounds of this. I've been saying for a LONG time now that the native app icons look dull and need to be totally revamped.

I've also been begging for the abandonment of all the skeumorphism junk. I personally love the idea of a more flat, minimalistic look for icons and certain UI elements.

I have all the confidence in the world that they have a good idea of how to pull off "flat/minimal" without making it feel dull. I love the prospect of them streamlining the look of some of the native apps and going in more of a design direction like the most recent Podcast app release.

You know Apple are in trouble when they start copying Microsoft instead of the other way around.

The problem with going flat is quickly figuring out what's a button, because buttons typically have a "raised" appearance so they stand out. Not all skeuomorphism (sp?) is evil.

Usability is in grave danger of going south: someone needs to light Jakob Nielsen's fuse, throw him in a room with Apple and Microsoft, and shut the door.

I will get rid of my jailbreak for iOS 7 if it is worth it, assuming there won't be a JB right away.

I disagree that it's game over.

But it does call attention to Apple's willingness to copy a fresh design like Windows 8 as though Apple is exempt from accountability for its actions, hypocrisy & blatant bashing of its competitors.

One fact I did learn is it was Steve Jobs himself that loved skeumorphic elements that reflected the stitching in his Gulfstream. Like the 1950's style gold leather trimmed, stitched Desk Calendar. A nasty old item that's for sure.

I'm especially happy to read that Apple will bring the look & feel of iOS 7 into the present and give us contemporary style. Its welcome news that they're tossing out the horrid old address book & calendar that's dated Apple as old & stodgy for far to long.

Now if they can summons the courage to include a larger display it will be a sign that Apple is moving forward.

The real challenge for Jony Ive will be to change things up from a looks standpoint, but keep things easy to use and elegant. I for one am looking forward to a new look, but my wife is STILL talking about how she wants the old Google Maps back, just because it was familiar.

If Ive can give us a new look, but keep it elegant and simple to use, all while adding new features, iOS 7 will be a home run.

looking different is easy, looking good is what's hard.
