Sorry, but the world is coming to an end tomorrow. The sun will explode... there won't be a sunrise tomorrow morning!

It'll take quite a while for sunlight to stop reaching us, unless it has already exploded, in which case we would already know. It would implode rather than explode, and if it did explode, we'd be dead by now.

If it's just an iPhone 4s...

I understand that Apple isn't hyping anything, but the fact remains that the iPhone 5 is probably the most hyped product ever.

If they wait 16 months from the iPhone 4 release with all this hype just to release an "iPhone 4s," Tim Cook's first product launch as official CEO would look like a failure.

Actually, no. We're only 8 light minutes from the sun. That means it only takes sunlight 8 minutes to reach the earth. So if the sun explodes, we'll know within 8 minutes... but of course, if it does, we'll all be dead.

Anyway, the sun will explode because Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz will create an explodenator and blow up the sun so he could generate and sell electricity to the whole tri-state area!

Some people just don't understand how this new generation thing works. They think an iPhone is an iPhone and don't understand about hardware cycles etc.
Or they understand it but just don't care enough. They want an iPhone now and what is on offer makes them happy. They know very well that something better will come along rather sooner than later but they simply do not care enough about any of the potential improvements. It will get a dual-core 'A5', so what, it is plenty fast enough for me. It might get a larger screen, I am fine with the current screen size. It might get a bit thinner and lighter, I don't find the current iPhone too thick for my taste.

Let's see..

iPhone 1 = iPhone 2007
iPhone 2 = iPhone 3G 2008
iPhone 3 = iPhone 3GS 2009
iPhone 4 = iPhone 4 2010
iPhone 5 = iPhone 5/4S/Whateverthename 2011

No matter what name the 2011 iPhone has, it will be the 5th iPhone

I dont know, I dont think 11 minus 7 is 5. I look at the 3Gs as a mid model update over a phone that was trash and they knew it. the next iphone is only the 4th in my opinion.

...to continue from an earlier comment, I believe the good doctor you name is Alexander von Schmettow's line manager at T-Mobile UK.

I don't know, my 3Gs still works great as a telephone and email machine. I'm losing my interest in the iTunes Store, the App Store and the "look at all the cool things my phone can do" thing. What would really interest me the most is true 4G Internet and the horsepower to play Flash, FLAC and MPEG. If a telephone is going to be a computer let's at least make it a good one.

My Physics teacher would disagree, so would the physics course I followed.

What is the difference between 'hype' and 'high interest'? -- The difference is whether one personally thinks the 'high interest' is justified or not, ie, if somebody else shows more interest in something than you, you are likely to describe this high interest as 'unjustified' and thus as hype.

In other words, something is hype (or neglect) by definition if the majority opinion differs from your personal opinion. Which means that almost everything is either 'hype' or 'neglect' since majority opinion is highly unlikely to exactly coincide with your personal opinion. But it also means that the speaker (the person using the term 'hype') thinks he knows better than the majority what is justified and what is not justified.

The current iPhone is called the iPhone 4 by Apple; Apple clearly isn't listening to you.

Actually, the only person whose opinion really counts is Steve's. After all, he's the one who makes the top-level marketing and design decisions. If Steve wants to call the next handset the iPhone 5, he will. Your opinion on the matter is worthless.

And that's the likely scenario since Steve likes simplicity. He (or someone else) will get up on stage and announce the iPhone 5, with the A5 chip, running iOS 5.

If you disagreed with the Dr. Heinz that I was talking about... that's fine. It was just a joke.

If you disagreed on sunlight reaching the earth in 8 minutes, then you need to do some Math.

Light travels about 5.9 trillion miles in a year, and the sun is only 93 million miles away. The speed of light is 186,000 miles/second, so light from the sun reaches the earth in 500 seconds, or 8 minutes and 20 seconds.

If you're talking about a star that explodes a long time ago and we just now see it, you're talking about stars that are hundreds or thousands of light years away... maybe millions.

preorder(pre·or·der)

noun
an order for an item that has not yet been made commercially available.
OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY .[/QUOTE)

Hi, thanks for that; interesting. I wonder why I had never heard of 'pre' as in 'pre-order' until a few years ago, and, let's say you are right in your defn, it IS still used in ridiculous place such as pre- ordering theatre interval drinks.

I don't see anything wrong in expecting good, clear English in written commuunications. The biggest mistake is in the mis- use of the possessive apostrophe, such as loco's, dvd's, phone's and yet writing the shorter version of 'let us' as lets rather than let's. Perhaps I'm getting old....

Perhaps I know have more in common with your ex- teacher than I would ever have thought.

Thanks again,
Richard

You do realize that Steve Jobs is terminally ill and very likely has a few months (maybe weeks) to live (judging from the decline in his health lately) and consequently has more important things on his mind than smart phones?

We did do maths, we factored in several theories and converted everything to standard time units, not seconds/minutes - but also unified atomic mass, permitivity + permeability of free space. It got rather complex, but it was a bit longer than 8 minutes.

Edit, I should add that we won't all experience this simultaneously.

However, I did not disagree that sunlight reaches parts of the Earth in 8 minutes.

All subsidiaries of Deutsche Telekom share the same logo. The article is abundantly clear that this is for Deutsche Telekom in Germany, and I don't see the word "Europeans" anywhere.

People don't read anymore.

We clear? ;)

I guess you should have a grownup read it to you instead of just looking at the pictures.

Standard time units? What's wrong with seconds? Did you convert everything to Planck times or something? What is the use of that?

Also none of the other things have anything to do with how long it would take for photons emitted by the sun to reach us. Well permeability of free space does of course (and is this the electric or the magnetic?) but none of those point to it taking any longer than about 8 minutes.

Of course, if the sun explodes, it will continue to emit light for quite a bit longer than 8 minutes but that was not the point. If the Sun exploded, we'd know about it in 8 minutes. Not sooner since nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, and not later because even if the Sun would implode and from some kind of ultra strong magnetic field that would keep any photons from leaving (which is not going to happen, the Sun doesn't have enough mass for that), there will be lots and lots of neutrinos which will reach us and be detectable at that level. So there.

Is it possible that there will be 2 new phones?

In past years, Apple has kept the previous generation phone for sale.

Perhaps this time, they are updating the iPhone 4 to the new iPhone 4S, while also releasing a brand new iPhone 5. They will be able to sell the 4S at a lower price point since it shares many of the production values as the current one, while the iPhone 5 will sit in the upper price range as the iPhone 4 has done up till now.

Just a thought.

Unless you live on the moon or the business buys the phone for you I don't know anyone how would spend this month his money on an old, outdated piece of hardware. Don't get me wrong, it's lovely but it is also 1+ year old. I think Apple's interest is to push new tech in big volume.

And do everything great. iPhone 4 is a awesome smartphone even if it is 1 year old. Most people need a smarthphone and buy it now, i would buy it too now if i needed a new one. For 99% of users iPhone will be enough.

I called them just before, the women said that this is true, but due to technical difficulties they stopped it and it will continue this thursday or friday. I have read reports form german people saying they called and a reservation/voucher is being sent to them.

I hope this week Apple announce the date for the september keynote.
September 14th maybe? The sooner the better ;)

The manager at one of my local Apple stores told me today that there will be a Press Conference this week, on Wednesday 9/7/11.

Hey, he could be wrong, but...
