Not necessarily. Several automakers have varying degrees of OTA updates available. GM was doing OTA updates as far back as 2009, even before Tesla.

So why didn’t OTA ever work on their EV, the Chevy Bolt???

I wouldn't say it didn't ever work but OTA isn't perfect. Tesla customers have complained about issues with OTA updates too. OTA is nice but it can't take care of everything. Two of Tesla's most recent recalls (the review camera harness issue on Model 3s and frunk latch assembly issue on Model Ss) can't be done OTA and require in-person service.

That we can certainly agree, but when every single software change requires a trip to the dealer, and that happens much more frequently than hardware recalls requiring in person service.
There is a reason that VW has been desperately trying to get OTA working for their EVs -- the problem is, they've failed so far, because software was just one more thing they. like most of legacy auto, were outsourcing and creating competent in-house software takes time

Even though many automakers have some degree of OTA capabilities, it's still largely in its infancy. Most consumers are still used to and content with the having to take their car in for service. As OTA capabilities get better and become more common, that will start to change but by then most "legacy automakers" will be a lot better at it. The legacy automakers have the vast majority of customers and will be driving a lot of the consumer change/shift whether it be OTAs or ICE to EV.

You'll be missing out on the best EVs then, especially if you go with a Ford lol. CarPlay is not the future. Manufacturers want full control of the in-car experience so they can monetize it with media, game and app purchases, location-based advertising and more. When self driving eventually happens those millions of vehicle passengers will be a valuable captive audience and vehicle manufacturers won't let Apple or Google replace their highly monetized UI.

For a glimpse of the future, look at CES from a few weeks ago. Ford (because of their partnership with Amazon) is putting Fire TV in their vehicles. So you're locked into Amazon's ecosystem for in-vehicle entertainment, and that's just the beginning.

They can “want” all day… but what the consumers want matters more. Just look at what happened with Toyota and CarPlay…

Lack of CarPlay is the one* thing keeping me from buying a Tesla.

* - Not having space in the budget for a $60,000 car also a heavy factor if we’re being honest.
In case you didn't know ... CarPlay has a SERIOUS problem when using your iPhone to attempt to navigate through it. It'll keep your location about 2-400 yards off from your actual GPS position. There's not a fix, as of yet!

It appears that since the Pi is an external device and you’re just connecting to it using the browser, you probably won’t be voiding any warranties, since you’re not modifying the car.
WHY NOT just use your iPhone and bluetooth through that? No need for streaming from the Tesla S/W!

I have never seen that kind of GPS problem. CarPlay is just a secondary screen projected from your phone. Navigation in CarPlay is just using Apple Maps or Google Maps on your phone and there has been no widespread problem like that with the GPS on the phone.

I don't want to have to use the phone's small screen to control things while I'm driving. CarPlay brings an optimized UI for that onto the large car screen.

You may not have a need for CarPlay but many of us do for our own reasons. Allowing it does not impact those of you who don't use it.

Well ... do a modicum of research. I, for a fact, saw this problem with my daughter's Ford F250. Screwed up with both her and her husband's iPhones. I didn't use mine in their vehicle using CarPlay and NO problem. But .... HERE YOU GO ... https://www.autoevolution.com/news/...-google-maps-to-lose-gps-tracking-141266.html

Looks like some people are having issues, but the cause is not clear. Not sure where the discussions are happening. I did not see any discussions here in the CarPlay forum. Not sure how widespread it is

I have Tesla Model 3 which I brought with me to Jordan and Tesla's navigation doesn't work at all here. It would be great to have Apple CarPlay to be able to drive Tesla anywhere in the world.

Is that because the car has no cellular service there?
