Developers Frustrated at Apple for Just One Day's Notice to Submit Apps Ahead of iOS 14 Release Today

Here you go folks. Wait with the update at least a week.
That's not necessary. I haven't found an app besides Pokemon Go that doesn't work on the beta. The existing apps will work, developers just wont' be able to release an update that uses any iOS 14 features.

There’s some widgets I’d like to see from Devs. Can’t get those yet because they have to be reviewed.

What about those Pokemon Go fans who can’t go without PG?

For everyone upset that developers are "moaning and complaining", users can be 10x this when one bug interrupts their workflow.

We want to fix the bugs, we want you to have a good experience. <1 day of testing on the final build is not going to get you that.

And inevitably, someone will download an app, complain that its update from last week has a showstopper bug on the iOS 14 GM release and give us a ranty 1 star review.

This is Apples fault, not ours.

During its "Time Flies" event yesterday, Apple announced that iOS 14, iPadOS 14, watchOS 7, and tvOS 14 will be widely released today, providing developers with just one day's notice to submit their optimized apps for review.

While developers have had access to beta versions of the software updates since June, many were caught off guard by Apple's much shorter notice of the final releases. By comparison, Apple started accepting apps built for iOS 13 on September 10 last year, over one week before the software update was released on September 19.

iOS 14, iPadOS 14, watchOS 7, and tvOS 14 should be released to the public around 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time today. We've shared a list of compatible devices for each software update here. Note that Apple has yet to announce a release date for macOS Big Sur.

In an email to developers, Apple said that all iOS and iPadOS apps submitted to the App Store will need to be built with Xcode 12 and the iOS 14 SDK starting in April 2021. Likewise, Apple said all watchOS apps submitted to the App Store will need to be built with Xcode 12 and the watchOS 7 SDK starting in April 2021.

They delayed the launch by 3 hours? It’s not showing iOs15 yet.

Apps cannot be submitted using Beta tools

GM could have changes that cause rework or fixes to the app

Apple has to review the new apps before they can be posted on the store.
I think what was being said is that it seems most apps existing apps seem to work fine as is, without any major glitches, meaning that yes, while it isn’t enough time to properly test apps and fix bugs, the actual user experience won’t be as bad as made out to be while the developers patch and update their apps over the next week.

Sounds like I need to wait before jumping on the new release. Can't have important apps like my banking apps, etc crashing. Glad I skipped the beta period this year although I was highly tempted with the next look. I learned from iOS 13 though.

It’s not about Apples Apps it’s about 3rd party developer apps. Apple will do what they need but things like Pixelmator, AppClips devs, etc. have to finish testing things on the GM of XCode and ios14 before they can submit to Apple for review to be put in the store. It’s not just about patches but new apps too.

Just here to say I have over 30 app updates today alone. Is it ideal? No. But your app should work, for the most part. No, your widget won’t be updated today. We, as users, will live. If you put some “do not run on iOS>13” restrictions on your app, though, that is totally on you.
Use that extra time to add some details to your release notes beyond “squashed some bugs, did some stuff”

Now if only one of those apps wasn’t my banking app, that’d be great. I don’t know whether to blame the app developer or Apple for whether it’s breaking.

Apple in June: iOS 14 will be out this Fall

Devs: Dope

Apple, 7 days before the start of Fall: Hey guys I know it’s been a rough Summer and there’s been some drama in the dev community — but surprise! — you can release your new apps when iOS 14 comes out tomorrow.

Devs: Uh hey not cool, we weren’t ready.

MacRumors users: Awwwww boohoo poor devs.
Developers are always surprised. It was 100% certain that iOS14 will be released in mid-September.

Everyone knows Apple doesn't care about developers or their reputations. When are they going to learn? (myself included 😆)

Shame on me for thinking Apple would give us more lead time so we could publish bug-free apps.

The big deal is that as an app developer, I can’t guarantee compatibility and bugs which software which I haven’t yet tested it first on. Betas are not an appropriate medium.

Most users will just uninstall an app if they face critical usage bugs; which may have been introduced late in the game.

Wow. I think that is being overly dramatic. Give us users a little respect. Just like after any OS upgrade, some problems are to be expected. I don't immediately go, man there is a glitch in this app "delete" because if that is my immediate reaction to your software, an OS update is the least of your worries. If people are not wanting transition pains, they shouldn't be upgrading until 14.1 or 14.2.

I mean don’t this OS get announced with developer tools months ago?

GM could have changes between beta version that could cause the app to crash, fail or not work entirely. In addition Apple requires you use GM release to put an app on the store. + the app has to be reviewed too even an update has to be reviewed when adding new features for major OS changes.

Yeah, I thought the same. WTF was going on all summer with the betas. Didn't know you can't do anything without the final version of XCode, etc., either. Okay, then, who wants to load the final version of the software on a production phone and not be able to use all your apps? I saw a few of mine come through with updates this morning (must have worked late last night), but good grief, Apple....
Yeah, not being an true developer, I was excited to be able to get the new iOS after just one day. That being said, I didn’t know that Apple didn’t provide the GM version until yesterday, and didn’t think of the app submission review process. After reading the developer reactions this morning, their feelings are justified. However, also being on the other side of software releases, another possible scenario comes to mind. If Apple found an issue they needed to resolve last minute, that took longer than expected to resolve, they would have needed to make a choice to they delay their shipment of Apple Watch 6 and SE, costing them money, or move forward with the release and drop an immediate release of iOS 14 on third party developers. Of course, we would never know if this is the case, but I cannot imagine Apple didn’t consider an impact here.

You’d be surprised by how little users in general understand the transition may come with some pain. I don’t think you can post feedback for apps on the App Store on iOS betas (or at least are discouraged from doing so) simply because.
