I love reading all the comments from people who are not developers but who think they have a clue what it's like being a developer, want to write here saying developers are just a bunch of whiners for Apple only giving 24 hours but but but we had the betas since June.

Then we will come back in about 4 hours and they will be whining saying their favorite app does not work with iOS 14.

To be honest I'm increasingly getting the impression that Apple just aren't that fussed about third party apps. They want you using their first party apps and if a third party app exists for something then Apple is hoping to eventually replace it with their own first party option.

You developers had whole summer to update your apps! Stop finding an excuse to bash at Apple.

Focus on 14.1 that will be dropping soon.

That's not at all what the complaint here is. Developers are not allowed to submit -- in advance -- public versions of their apps that use the iOS 14 frameworks. Usually developers are given a week to submit these apps prior to the new OS release so that finishing touches can be put on, there's no delays in approval when everyone submits at once, and everything is in the pipeline or already on people's devices when the new OS version ships.

This is a completely reasonable complaint; I don't know why you're needlessly dunking on developers here.

This just isn't how any of this is supposed to work. Welcome to 2020 I guess. They have to start putting the GM on the 12's to meet the launch date, so it has to go GM like right now. Reminds me of the Lumia 950 launch where it launched with a terrible incomplete version of software just to get it out the door.

What a bunch of whiners. Do people not realize developing for Apple is not the only career choice in the entire world? I realize complaining about the last minute notice on Twitter is not a super big deal, but lots of these same developers have been complaining for years about "Apple this" and "Apple that" and "30% developer fees" and a bunch of other stuff. If you don't like developing for iOS, then don't do it. And if there are legitimate issues, tell Apple, not the whole world.

It’s amazing how people who have no idea how any of this actually works are quick to trash developers. You can’t submit apps that you built in beta versions of Xcode and tested against beta versions of iOS. Apple will reject those. Apple will only accept apps that are tested against the gold master release of Xcode and gold master of iOS 14 (both released yesterday)

This isn’t something to blame developers for..

Just Curious. Can't they submit a week later?

Not really. Most users will be updating day one, and if something broke between the last beta and the GM you have to fix it, do full regression testing (or should do full regression testing), then submit for release, and if Apple finds something wrong you missed, then it'll delay you even longer.

2 weeks from GM to release was what they did in the past which was very reasonable.

It's not like they haven't had until June to test. Plus, anyone with some insight into the beta process should have had an idea it was coming out this week or next at most.

Edit: I am wrong here. I hadn’t thought about it properly until someone pointed it out to me. I wasn’t thinking about how an app needs to be tested for the specific release build. My apologies to the developer community.

Apple in June: iOS 14 will be out this Fall

Devs: Dope

Apple, 7 days before the start of Fall: Hey guys I know it’s been a rough Summer and there’s been some drama in the dev community — but surprise! — you can release your new apps when iOS 14 comes out tomorrow.

Devs: Uh hey not cool, we weren’t ready.

MacRumors users: Awwwww boohoo poor devs.

I was thinking this, but let's update with reality:

Apple, 7 days before the start of Fall: Hey guys I know it’s been a rough Summer and there’s been some drama in the dev community — but surprise! — you can release your new apps when iOS 14 comes out tomorrow. Here is the tool you need to compile your iOS 14 apps for submission, its brand new. Good luck!

Devs: Uh hey not cool, the changes you made in iOS 14 GM broke our app and we have zero time to test.

See my earlier comments, I thought it was just QQ on Devs parts, but in reality, if you require the final build of Xcode to submit apps, AND you provide that the day before, you're not giving Devs OR end users a good experience for a number of reasons:

  1. Not a ton of Quality Assurance (QA) time with the Golden Master of iOS 14, this could lead to bugs in what is going to be a crowded review time. So if you release your app with a major issue, it could take a week to get the fix out.
  2. Many times the app that supports the newest features gets all the attention when a new version of iOS drops, so having no notice means you can't support those features at the start. The apps that do get reviewed first will win, and that is going to favor very large companies that have 30 QA staff. So enjoy Candy Crush on iOS 14...
  3. End Users aren't super forgiving with issues in Apps, so if you do push your iOS 14 app out quickly, and there is a bug, you could tank your entire business with people being like [*/**** - 1 Star, this app sucks, crashes all the time, I hate you <app name>] reviews.

Sorry? Developers had NINE betas and several months to test their apps. As always.

Yes, and developers update their apps each beta because each beta breaks things, and GMs are no exception. This is a real problem, Apple screwed up, and anyone thinking they didn't has never developed a piece of software. Two of our apps we thought were ready to go broke with the GM. Thats a problem.

I guess we forgot the purpose of the MONTHS LONG beta testing process

I will guess we forgot that Apple only began accepting app submissions written for iOS14 YESTERDAY... making your comment pointless, irrelevant, and stupid. Doesn't matter if you've had months or even years to develop if you can't actually submit it before the day of release.

The incessant whining from some developers this summer has been beyond annoying. The betas for iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 have been out since June. Everyone knew that final release was coming sometime around now. To feign surprise is so freaking disingenuous and just pushes me to find alternatives to the apps they make.

Chief among the whiners, which is pretty on brand for him the past couple of years, is Marco Arment. Everything seems to just be over the top dramatically terrible in his eye. I love Overcast, but I really just want to find an alternative at this point just because I'm tired of supporting him.
