The rumor is that this was so that Apple could shame developers who are tracking users.
I think if this were the case, Apple wouldn't have just a week or two ago announced it's delaying a bunch of anti-tracking features after a couple big developers (namely Facebook) complained.

I think it's more likely that these releases got pushed onto such a tight schedule because Apple has to satisfy resellers and Wall Street with new hardware releases (fiscal year 2020 ends for Apple in a couple weeks), and that new hardware required the new software.

Breaking news from developers... the developers who were successful in submitting new apps last night using the last second Xcode build are having the apps approved in mass only hours later. The good news is a surprising number of iOS 14 apps may just make the release but concerning news is obviously someone at Apple told the review team the criteria for checking iOS 14 apps last night was “does it launch? ... good enough for us!” so hopefully no big surprises!

I'm not a developer but I cannot understand how anyone is defending Apple in this case...
As an iPhone user I want all my apps to work reliably without crashing/obvious bugs. Giving developers virtually no time to test and submit their builds for the GM is the exact opposite of reliability and creates a huge potential for unintended behaviors with customers' apps.

Actually, this can't be in Apple's interest either...

Thank you for answering informatively without being an arrogant jerk, like many of these other developers.

To the rest of you, ha ha ... get to work!!!

The conversation started polite, but people have been trying to dunk on developers in this thread from the beginning, like they know what they're talking about. I'm not at all shocked that some of them are getting snarky.

Except it doesn't work that way. We always had a week to 10 days to test our apps with the final build.

You also can't be submitting to the store with beta builds of Xcode. We only got the final version of Xcode yesterday and when this happens review times always go way up. So if our app does not work on iOS 14 it could be days to over a week before we can submit a build with iOS 14 that corrects those issues.
Thanks for explaining. It’s unfortunate Apple did not give the developers more time before iOS14 launched. I hope you do not have to go through the process you described.

2020 has been an absolute dumpster fire of a year for relations between Apple and developers; and Apple’s adversarial posture toward developers continues with this little stunt.

If the OS releases had to be this week due to the new hardware releasing on Friday, I’m not sure why Apple couldn’t have thrown developers a little bit of a bone and made the public release of the new OSs happen tomorrow instead of today.

Coming into this thread I figured I'd get a few good laughs from people that are extremely uninformed, but even I must admit that the number of people who know less than nothing about the entire process but think they know it all is even more comical than I expected. Lots of good laughs this morning!

Well, that is indeed unfortunate for developers and I deeply appreciate their hard workings in this process. However, as a consumer, I have a right to use and enjoy all the features the latest public release of system software (iOS/iPadOS 14 in this case) can offer. And at the same time, developers also have to make sure their applications to be optimized and work as expected under the most recent public release. I sympathize with developers for testing applications in such a short time frame and understand that Apple should take some or major responsibilities in this.

However, as a customer, I am not here to judge whose fault is for causing uncertainties in apps optimization/developing under new system. Actually, It is even not customers’ obligation to be involved between the 2 parties Apple and developers. I only know that customers are rightfully entitled to use apps in latest public release. If the latest system software works well but the apps fail to bring their promises, I will only uninstall those apps but not downgrade the system to “accommodate” developers’ incapability. If possible, I will even look for better and more optimized apps to replace those apps which perform miserably under the latest system software.

Remember, there are always better alternative in app market. Only by keeping updating apps with new features and developing in accordance with latest guidelines, developers can remain competitive. Best wishes to you.

🤮 this is why Apple just screwed developers... because the average user like this one can’t be bothered to do anything but blame developers who through no fault of their own won’t have iOS 14 apps available at launch. makes me sick, and I’m not a developer.

What exactly is one extra week going to do? Seriously. If your app wasnt ready by Beta 8 and 3 months of development thats on you. The GM is IDENTICAL to Beta 8.

1: It's not.
2: Waiting (praying) for Apple to fix bugs before investing time to work around them.
3: Apple hasn't updated Xcode in 3 weeks, which means that reliable physical testing is out the window.
4. There have been dramatic changes to APIs and systems between B1 and B8, including some things that made it impossible to work with on earlier versions.
5. There's not enough time for any proper QA tests! Biggest complaint from me. Sadness.

In fairness, when the general tone of the first responses was "Cry me a river and next time maybe do your job" from people who clearly had no idea what they were talking about, it because understandable how the responses were what they were.

What are the new devices going to come with? Timmy said iOS14. Are they updating millions? of devices this week before shipping, or are they coming with one of the betas? Everything I've ever bought has needed updates right away. Maybe the Ghost of Jony is trying to make the amount of time between GM and release even thinner. :)

Reading through this thread and people saying they’ve had no problem with apps during the iOS 14 beta...I guess being clueless that prior to today there were ZERO apps in the App Store supporting any new iOS 14 feature (like widgets) because they weren’t allowed to be submitted. If you can’t spare a thought for developers then how about all the Apple employees within app review who are frantically reviewing and approving app submissions right now.

They had 3 months of betas to get it ready, they wait till last min and say this

The whole beta testing is for apps to get it ready they should all be updated on launch but it always takes months that’s coz the developers can act lazy like Facebook with dark mode
...except, if you had read comments not far above yours, developers CAN'T submit apps made with a beta Xcode. They only got the necessary GM Xcode yesterday.

I’ve thought the same. That poster posts within the first page on virtually every news story and is lauding Apple in every post with zero nuance or analysis.

You would have to convince me that it is not some sort of AI commenting bot designed to appeal to the masses for maximum likes.

I'll just wait to update to iOS14 for a week or so. Let all the latest versions of app funnel into the store. I'm sure my battery life will thank me for not running buggy versions of apps.

Updating an app can take months, that's what the betas are for. Final adjustments due to bugs only discovered in the last version can still take a week. Builds can take a day. The app review process takes a few days.

Same. I am going to wait until Nov (most likely when the new iPhones will be announced or even released).
