My thoughts exactly and I like it. But making a squircle out of a rectangular picture seems a bit too much for me.

Well when I found out they had rounded the corners of the app icons I couldn't sleep with excitement.

macOS 11 Big Sur is the next major release of Apple's operating system for Mac, and following its preview at WWDC, one of the biggest discussions has revolved around the all-new user interface redesign.

Developers are still learning what the impact the new UI will have on their apps, and with that in mind, app designer Andrew Denty has compiled an extensive visual comparison of the user interface changes between macOS Catalina and macOS Big Sur.
The side-by-side comparisons cover changes to Finder, Preview, System Preferences, the menu bar, Notification Center, Safari, Calendar, Contacts, Reminders, Notes, Photos, Apple Music, Podcasts, and many other native apps.

Overall, Denty's takeaway is that the UI differences in Big Sur aren't as dramatic as he first thought, consisting of a "largely incremental set of changes to make macOS feel more coherent with iOS and iPad OS."

That said, he thinks Apple "still has a vast amount of work to do to perfect the new macOS UI" before it exits the beta, and he hopes to see more consistency in the launch experience of apps, as well as more visual separation in elements like status bars and path bars, which he admits "look a little unloved" and don't yet feel properly integrated.

Big Sur is available for developers at the current time, but Apple also plans to make a beta available for public beta testers in July, followed by an official release in the fall. What are your thoughts on the redesigned UI? Let us know in the comments below, and don't forget to check out our Big Sur roundup for an extensive look at all the new features.

Apple just keeps improving everything. I always look forward to new releases. And no, I'm not being sarcastic. I've been an Apple advocate since my first Mac Plus.

Looks better. Always hated the grey look am glad they are getting rid of it, especially in safari and finder

A great comparison and shows how little has actually changed while still giving a fresh new look. It really looks great! Alas I'll need to replace my main machine in order to run it so I'll be waiting for a nice Arm model first.

The biggest change seems to be to the window chrome. I'll miss the silver of the last 20 years but that was for a different era when even the bezels matched the UI and was all about getting the most colour neutral for working in Photoshop with matte screens.

I like how the toolbar/titlebar both looks less cluttered and is smaller.

My thought exactly. The tweaks they have done all make it look that much better, without changing too much... maybe except one thing:
What do you think guys about the more translucent menu bar? I still prefer the old one because of the better contrast and readibility :(
I'm not sold on the new, almost fully transparent menu bar (or Finder), either. In Catalina I've turned off the transparency altogether.

Edit: BTW, does the System Preferences > Accessibility > Display still support "Reduced transperency" in BigSur?

It is the infantilization of software, making it appeal to kids rather than adults. Candification, with transparency and effects using the combined wattage of a medium nuclear power plant. Duolingofication, just plain silly.

You’re a little behind. Aqua came out 20 years ago.

I wish they could come up with a better icon for Safari. I have full-on hate for that ugly blue compass thing. I despise it.
I am glad they are changing the mail icon. I have never been a fan of the old icon with the bird stamp. The new one with the envelope is so much more simple and intuitive. Looks fine to me otherwise. Although, I hope there will be enough contrast on the menu bar for old eyes. Time will tell.

I don’t see any mess. Quite the opposite. I see a clearly visible interface with high contrast and full of color. I can easily recognize all apps on the first sight. I see fun and unique design rather than boring black or white uniformity.
it’s pretty bad. I actually wasn;t sure if that post was meant to be ironic or sarcastic or actually serious. But it’s pretty dated and yikes is it silly in 2020
