Earlier this week, Apple began sending out emails to iOS developers, offering them a chance to purchase a 42mm Apple Watch Sport with a Blue Sport Band guaranteed to ship by April 28, 2015. Apple had a limited number of devices to provide to developers, and used a lottery system to determine who would get the chance to purchase one of the available watches.

Developers who registered for a chance to buy one of the watches with a guaranteed delivery date and won the lottery have just begun receiving emails with purchase instructions. Apple is asking winners to complete a purchase by 5:00 p.m. local time on April 27 to take advantage of the shipping date.

It's not known why Apple only offered 42mm Apple Watch Sport models with Blue Sport bands, but it can be assumed that the combination may have been one that the company had an ample supply of. Apple is providing developers with watches in an effort to give them devices to test Apple Watch apps on.

A guaranteed April 28 ship date means developers who purchase one of the available devices will receive an Apple Watch just a few days after customers who pre-ordered receive theirs.

you know something is not quite right when you have to have a lottery for a product launch. but hey at least Beyonce got her free special golden edition a week early

Hope one day Apple will offer a 'hardware subscription' for developers. As a developer, it remains a pain to not be able to get the latest hardware on launch day.

I was at Cupertino in November last year and the staffers I saw wearing the watch were all wearing the blue strap sport model.

Supply and demand would dictate this means the Apple Watch is underpriced, regardless of its profits margin.

Do we know that it was free? If it's really hers and not Apple's that Apple loaned to her as a form of advertising for Apole, which Apple will take back from her at their own whim, then I figure she paid, possibly extra, even, for the opportunity to have it early. You know she has the money.

My guess is that bright blue bands wern't popular. People shelling out the amount of money Apple is asking for are looking for something elegant and/or stylish. Bright blue isn't elegant or stylish. White, Pink, and Black are (or at least can be.) Although blue is many people's favorite color (thus maybe leading to Apple producing a lot), it's not actually a color many people would want to strap to their wrists all the time, I don't think.

Huh? This lottery is for developers who are creating apps. Don't get your point.

Beyoncé getting a watch before
public roll out seems strange? Marketing strategy is not a science but Apple has a good track record.

I'm sure this move will be greatly appreciated by developers and consumers alike. It will definitely lead to even more incredible apps for those rockin an Apple Watch. So it's a win-win-win for all.

There are instructions by clicking on the link in the email. They did not have time to augment the fulfillment system. What's happening is if you order the prescribed watch in the email link, they'll look at the Apple ID connected to the order. If it is just that, you get expedited shipping. Yeah it says June in the order. Dev's you get your watch next week if you order now and have the email in your box.

Wasn't really interested in getting one at first. However, since they reached out and I got an invite, I went ahead and placed an order. :p

Any correspondence between developers with WWDC tickets and watch lottery winners?

I would think Apple would love to show a bunch of blue bands in the WWDC crowd.

No correspondence here, did not apply for a ticket but "won" the watch lottery.

Thanks. (You're right, win has multiple connotations! LoL. Enjoy your watch.)

I'm thinking that Apple overbuilt this model and with a special offer to developers, in one fell swoop, they can clear the channel of this variant and goose the pre- order numbers that will be announced on Monday.

I did not try for a WWDC ticket since I'm unavailable that week, but I "won" the developer Watch lottery and placed my order. I'm feeling like this one will come before the SS Classic Buckle I ordered that has launch window shopping :(

Do you think we can exchange the blue band for white band after the purchase? I won the lottery too, but i don't like the blue band.

The article says you gave to initiate the swap through the Online Store call center within 14 days of purchase. Sounds like they charge you for a new band and credit you if you return the old one.

Online ship date for extra sport bands is May.

Not sure how quickly they'll send the new band, or how long you have to return the old one, but if it's not long enough, ya could be without a band for while :)

I just ordered the extra band myself. If they won't take the blue one back, I'll try to sell it on Craigslist.

Anyone had any progress on their orders? I clicked through from email to order but still saying June dispatch

No progress yet, still says June, I called Dev support at apple and they say don't worry. I would think we should receive shipping notification tomorrow. I wonder where they are shipping from?
