good point zap, i think your right.

I was the second in my school with a 3G ipod, it was only uphill from there for the mp3 player

Firewire Sync

I’m kinda perturbed that Apple drug it’s feet about getting USB 2.0 for so long and convinced all Mac users that they didn’t really need it because of Firewire, and now that Mac users pretty much scoff at the idea of anything USB 2.0 instead of Firewire, Apple releases a USB 2.0 only item!?!?!?!

I wonder if Steve reads articles about him. For me, it would be so odd. He deserves the accolades, but I doubt riding their fortunes on a miniaturized iPod would risk their company's fortunes. Steve likes to exaggerate.

Reading all that makes the iPod nano even cooler now in my opinion. Way to go Apple - and way to make me want to finally trade in my 3G iPod as well! The mini couldn't do it, nor did the photo, shuffle, or newer iPods in general, but this damn nano might be the one that finally breaks my will.

Too bad Apple forgot to include the ability to sync music via firewire or I'd buy one today!!
I agree. It won't keep me from buying one, once it hits 10GB, but it would be nice if they updated to firewire eventually.

Went to Apple Tyson's today to look at the nano. Guess what? It was a buy at first sight! It is charging as I type!

dang.. i keep meaning to go down to the local store.
(i really only want to see them - i am happy with my 30gb photo)

*Neat article BTW

Apple/Samsung Deal Shows Promise

I'm really excited about this new iPod nano. I'd love to get one since I've got the monochrome iPods and the idea of such a small, elegant device with a color screen is very tempting. My old eMac doesn't have USB 2.0 unfortunately. So instead I think I'll buy a 4GB nano as a gift for someone I have in mind who already has a Dell with USB 2.0.

Samsung announced today that they plan to launch a new line of 16 gigabit NAND Flash Chips in late 2006. These can be assembled into 32GB memory cards. I'm sure that these will in some form find their way into iPods. Maybe the entire line of iPods will shrink to even more elegant proportions.

I'm eagerly looking forward to the performance and reliability improvements of solid state flash memory over hard drives. Tiny hard drives are great, but flash is the future.

Only if they put that much effort to bring up the computer end of Apple to be in line with the rest of the market.... :D

eh. the article kinda addresses this.

"What's really been great for us is the iPod has been a chance to apply Apple's incredibly innovative engineering in an area where we don't have a 5%-operating-system-market-share glass ceiling," Jobs says. "And look at what's happened. That same innovation, that same engineering, that same talent applied where we don't run up against the fact that Microsoft got this monopoly, and boom! We have 75% market share."

the whole glass ceiling thing. i wonder if there's any truth to it. i wonder what will happen when the intel switch is finished.

apple products are pretty demanding of their users. it's weird because they're also easier to use at the same time. like how switching over isn't something that should be taken lightly. and then how apple is pretty much locked down the mp3 player online music store market. you have to use iPod for iTMS. arstechnica had a little quip on their "monopsony."

Thats pretty cool I know jobs said something about it taking a long time on CNBC. Form factor wise its a step ahead over the mini.

Does everyone remember the patent from Apple that had an ipod mounting into just below the keyboard next to the trackpad on a PB?

With the nano I think that just might happen in some form...maybe on the outside of the lid or into like a PCI slot (or have aPCI cradle for it - would it fit?)

It's Jonathan not Johnathan. People misspell my name all the time and it drives me nuts!

Who's to say that there aren't thousands of Johnathans out there? I may be Jonathan and you likewise, but there are several who spell their names with two H's. In that case, the mispelling of your name is understandable. Just my 2,000,000 lira.

Really? Common. We're talking about functional equivalents here between USB and firewire. Are you sure it's not something else holding you back? What really is the difference between firewire and usb in an ipod transfer application?

I was bummed about that too. After reading the Time story, I wonder if they had to eliminate firewire support due to space issues inside the iPod? Not really sure if it would impact space inside the iPod, but just a thought...

It's a no brainer. PC's generally don't have firewire, so why go to the extra expense?... USB 2.0 is the norm for cosumer devices.

Page 2

So if only a few people knew of it, how did the Nano appear on a page 2 rumor? Somebody did blab it but no one believed him.

See, that was all Jobs needed to do: pre-announce a lame product a year in advance so everyone is talking about it, and then call a special event to officially announce it only to reveal the "real" product. Pure genius.

There may be those who spell it with two H's, but that would be a misspelling. Plenty of people have misspelled names.

The article said in here something very exciting to me-that even when the mini was considered astoundingly small apple recognized the need to design something smaller still. They then pushed it to market in nine months so that it could come out well in advance of the end of the mini's lifetime.

Now... has apple seen that the same needs to be done for the origional ipod? I sure hope they saw that when the nano came out, the full sized ipod would look monsterous and clunky. I think they would.

I think, given the time since prior updates, the lack of demand for greater capacity, and just how long the ipod has been out now, we are quite close to a shrunken, sexy ipod (because apple is not going to try and make in line voice recording a selling point).

I'd like to see this see this before the christmas season, but the lack of the paris expo, or this announcment at the music event that just happened, makes me think it's unlikely. Also, for the time it would take for the accessories market to catch up.

I would imagine such an ipod would come out just after christmas, like the shuffle, to give the slow season a boost, allow apple to maximize profits in the shopping season, and avoid taking the spotlight from the nano.

But sadly, I think it needs to come now. if not, apple's hard drive music player sales could be quite slow for the season.

Ive fondles a tiny Nano affectionately, pointing out all the things that nobody will ever notice but that he sacrificed months of his life for--things like the laser etching of the logo on the back or the surface's being slightly rougher on the click wheel than on the rest of the front. "I know you're not going to consciously find these details particularly appealing," he concedes, "but I think it's the fact that we've worried about all of them that makes the product so precious."

Oh, if only Jonathan Ive were as obsessive about the listening experience as he is about the physical design. Then maybe the iPod would finally conquer that annoying little gap between tracks. I can dream, can't I?

lol, I might be misunderstanding something, but are you saying people can't declare the correct way to spell their own names? If I say the correct way to spell my name is Johnathan, then it's not a misspelling to spell it that way!

Apple may have decided to fix something that was not broken by replacing the mini, but i cant help but think of some of the PPC products that, while not 'broken', definitely need some attention, namely the PM G5 and PB. Im beginning to agree with those of you who point out that the company's name is "Apple Computer", not "Apple, that company that builds the iPod".

That being said, the level of engineering that went into the nano is quite impressive, certainly a benchmark that apple should measure against even for their other products. And it makes other consumer electronics manufacture's products look positively shameful in comparison.

most macs older than about a year dont have USB 2 because we were told it was unnecessary, and that firewire is better... im sure they will work at USB 1 speed... but that would take hours to fill 4 GB

Major factors that Apple is going with USB 2.0 is:

1. USB 2.0 is backwards compatible and can work with Mac and PC, no need to have 2 products one with FireWire and the other USB 2.0.

2. Apple is moving to Intel based chips, thus getting an insane licensing deal on the use of USB 2.0. Cheaper too.

3. More USB 2.0 Consumer products on the market today than FireWire.

4. You can achieve the same results with USB 2.0 when compared to FireWire, with the exception of booting.

There you have it. :)
