I bought the Ridge from Amazon and the FitFolio from Target so I could compare them and keep the one I prefer.
For the Ridge, the sleep/wake problems while in book mode didn't bother me too much, but I'm having problems with the iPad waking from sleep when I'm carrying it around closed. It seems like the front cover shifts back and forth the slightest amount which causes this. Sometimes shifting the cover back won't even put it back to sleep. I have to open and close the cover to get it to work (or just hit the power button). This seems to happen quite often with this case. I'll be carrying my ipad around and look at top-side view and notice light coming from the screen. Maybe my magnets are too weak? Does anyone else have this problem? This has been annoying me quite a bit.
The FitFolio might have had the same problems as the Ridge, but it doesn't because of the clasp. The clasp does a great job of ensuring that the ipad stays asleep and doesn't wake up as easily when carrying it around. It still happens every once in a while, but it is very rare.
When it comes to viewing positions, the Ridge is better than the FitFolio because of the deeper grooves. I'm not sure what Speck was thinking with the shallow grooves. Maybe they didn't want to make the cover any thicker.
One thing I don't really like with either cover is the fact that the cover only has one fold. I'm pretty used to folding the smart cover accordion-style and creating a "spine" to hold onto while the ipad is in book-mode. Here's a picture of Andy Ihnatko showing what I'm talking about.
I think I'll be returning both the Ridge and the FitFolio, unfortunately. My ideal case would be like the FitFolio or Ridge but with a folding front cover like the smartcover that had a clasp like the FitFolio or some other easy way to secure it so the ipad doesn't wake from sleep inadvertently. I'm probably asking too much
The Devicewear Bridgeway might be the answer. It doesn't have a clasp, but because it is thin like the smartcover I'm hoping the cover stays in place better and doesn't inadvertently wake the ipad when I'm carrying it around. The Joy Factory SmartSuit3 might be what I'm looking for, as well.
