The only time I've actually damaged a laptop is when I got my foot caught on an old-style (anyone remember Lombard PowerBooks?) Apple power cable, lost balance, and while trying to recover my footing yanked the cable hard enough without it popping out of the laptop to bend the connector. As you might imagine, I was particularly happy when Apple came out with MagSafe :)

I fell pretty hard on some ice and my MBA in my backpack took the brunt of the force as I landed. Has a very similar mark on the corner to the ones posted here, but otherwise everything is OK.

I basically did this with my MBA. However, I tugged it so forcefully with my leg, although the magsafe came off, the initial tug managed to pull the MBA off the desk. It was open, and landed with the back of the screen flat on the wooden floor, before closing on itself - following by the external CD player I had attached bouncing around on top of it.

However, no damage at all. Not a mark!

Dont wanna pick up a fight with my GF with the MBA around. It has sharp edges:eek:

I like that this thread came back alive. That is quite the image you conjured up there a few months back! I find it amusing that the MBA is slated as perfect for travelling, when I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't let one on the plane with it - I agree those edges could do some damage! There was video of the old models slicing bread.

Maybe you need a old ibook clam ;-) could drop kick the puppy and nothing happen

Sore foot I'm betting, they're also a good 3+ kGs :) - even the handle it came with tended to crack with the strain. I got hold of a tangerine one 18 months ago for the cool factor. Definitely the most wasted space I've ever seen in a laptop design! But with no more OS updates for Panther and with little responsibility (iTunes playback, the occasional old game), I've never had such long uptimes lol.

Back on topic, I've managed to avoid any sort of drop so far with my 13" MBA. My old 15" MBP pre-unibody lost one of the magnets from the latch in a very minor fall - at least those days are behind us!

For a direct reply, that's why I don't quite buy the full brilliance of MagSafe - in my experience the amount of movement generated in pulling the plug out would be enough to cause a fall in many circumstances anyway.

I didn't

but this thread is VERY encouraging. Whenever I purchase another Air, it looks like it will take a lickin' and keep on tickin'.

I temped fate more than once while I was considering an Air, but I am glad everyone's MBAs are holding up to the falls much like the almost 5 year MBP I saw earlier this week.

I wasn't sure about the build quality of the unibody but now I'm really pleased.

Thanks for putting me at ease everyone, and very glad your MBAs are working perfectly :)

My friend accidently dropped mine,A 2 month old 17" MBP :(
It was a cramped setup at a club, It fell from the console table, like almost 4 feet, an inch odd scratch on the right corner of the lid.
I played my set after that, works fine till now.
I can't stop thinking about what happened right infront of my eyes :(

I am never letting anyone come around it, for sure.

Just dropped my 13" yesterday - slippery sucker got free of me and sailed about 3 feet onto hardwood floor, bounced and gave up the fight. Not a scratch. I was impressed.

Long story short: I had headphones in, turned around in my chair without taking them out by accident, and my MBA fell onto my leg and now I have a cut. Better that it falling straight onto the floor, though.

MagSafe headphones... Make it happen Apple!

Just dropped mine today

I thought it was the end of my brand new MBA 11" I just had bought a week ago. I was at school, carrying it in my backpack as usual, but, of course, I forgot to zip it and the MBA fell down with a rough movement of mine. First it hit the floor with the lower right corner, then it spinned, fell into the screen to the floor and, due to the momentum, moved about two feet... towards the stairs!

I did run, as fast as possible, actually falling through the stairs too, but I was not able to save it. As it finally landed on its final position, my mass decided to land exactly in the same space. As we all know, two bodies cannot occupy the same space at the same (well, believe me my MBA and me tried).

The result: Some minor dents on three of the four corners and a big bend on the lower right corner (where I landed)... it actually bended about 30º... Due to this last hit, the lid would stay opened.

When I finally put myself together I opened expecting the worst. As I though, nothing in the screen (it was slepping before the fall)... Nothing, nothing, nothing! Black screen! No keyboard light, nothing! Then I pressed the power button... one sec, two secs, three secs... that familiar boot up noise and I could see the Apple in the screen! To my surprise the screen was not harmed!

When the computer booted (I still haven't figured out why it turned off, accelerometers probably?) everything was fine, and it was working as is nothing had happened.

Later on, I learned about the "anatomy" of the MBA and I learned that the place where it has gotten the bad bent is the part of the machine that holds the battery. So, I went to a friend of mine, told him what had happened and asked him to use one of the big tools in the mechathronics labs (whose name I don't recall) to see if he could get the big bent area back into place. He applied heat and pressure, and voila! The MBA closes again properly...

You can now just see the stress marks on the metal, where it was bended back to place, and three little dents on the corners. But other than that, the machine works properly. I hate everytime I see the little details, but what the Hell, it survived.

How does a laptop fall off a bookshelf?

A) Earthquake?
B) Poorly positioned?
C) Sudden gust of wind?
D) All of the above

Answer:
D) All of the above

Me? I've never dropped one in over two decades :)

That's how careful I am with my Mac Laptops.

Last time I checked the MacBook Air box was not labeled "unbreakable."

Yes when I shop and I see a cup or something that is tagged unbreakable, I will drop test it before I buy it.

Not me, but I did manage to reply to this thread in an altogether different thread (one of the drawbacks of being an arse, I suppose):

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1048038/

Never dropped it but I'm quite proud of myself. Today I allowed another human being to pick up my new toy and I displayed no trace of any outward emotional response (or nervousness) at all.

My wife treats her 13" (a few years old -- I forget exactly what) like a football.
I can't believe it still works. It's got a lot of nasty dents but works well.

The worst (that she's admitted to) is when she "drop tested" it bare from 3+ ft onto asphalt in her parking lot at work

She'll crack the screen at some point, I'm sure, but the thing has been amazingly durable.

sounds like a classmate of mine who has dropped it down a flight of stairs by accident and the thing still works with a massive dent that is, the screen of hers is still unharmed.

I kicked it hard

It was on the floor opened and I did not realize and I kicked it hard when went running to get something quickly.... Nothing happened to it but my ankle was badly hurt. I could feel the pain for the next week or so. I have a small scar to remember.

airy

My brand new MBA 11" just blown over by wind!

I was sitting in our garden, working on a project. Then a sudden strong wind blown my papers away. I put the MBA on the table and get up trying to collect my papers. Then I heard a dropping sound and the next second my MBA was sitting on the floor, still open and working perfectly. No visible physical damage .

amazing stories - can't believe not a single broken lcd! This is why i believe many of the broken lcd's are defective. Time will tell
