Bro,

It took them 16 months to release something thats hardly different.

They have unlimited funds for development.

Thats OUR money that we gave them because they PROVED to US that they innovate and give us nice gems and gifts of products so thats the silent understanding Apple has with its loyal consumers which is why we trust them with our money and don't mind paying comparatively higher prices. In this case we felt like we didn't get our money's worth.

So Ill say it again HANK...

hardly different? More like hardly the same. Do you really think designing the physical appearance is the only time consuming or difficult part of creating a device? They improved EVERYTHING. Got an A5 in there (which was likely causing heat issues at first) while still improving battery life, engineered a BRAND NEW CAMERA and processing algorithms to improve said camera even more, built Siri into what we saw today (IMO this was probably a big reason for the delay). AND they did this amid a parts shortage after the japan crisis (most of the components for an iPhone come from Japan).

Apple may not have given me everything I wanted, but what they did today was still impressive, and I'm not surprised it took 16 months.

"Our" money was given to Apple in exchange for a product. A single product. Not a promise of a future product being released exactly 1 year later that didn't look the same. Stop acting so entitled...youre not

I like how the fanboys are defending Apple even if they don't like the 4S.

Look, I really like Apple, and I want to keep buying iPhones. But this time... I think they not only disappointed but they also didn't manage expectations well enough.

If there was no 5, they should have just done a controlled leak via WSJ that no iPhone 5 was going to be showcased. At that point, I would have been slightly disappointed. But no. Apple kept that hype and anticipation for an iPhone 5 all the way until the end.

Tim Cook, this is going to be a rough start. Sure you'll sell millions of iPhones, but I have already lost faith in you when it comes to managing public expectations.

But is it Apple's responsibility to manage expectations?

Bro,

Firstly, for the four hundred and seventeenth time, Apple does not owe you anything.

Secondly, you have not used this device. You do not own this device. You have not purchased this device. You have not spent money on this device. You do not live with this device. You have read about this device. How should you know that you "didn't get your money's worth" when you haven't even spent any money on it yet? And if you do spend money on it and still feel that way, then you will have made a stupid, uninformed decision. But since you feel so passionately about this issue, you will be spending the time between now and release researching the iPhone 4S, and then wait until release to go and use the device, and then make informed decision of spending money on it. Only then will you know if you got your money's worth! And if you do take that time, and the opportunity to test the device before you buy it, and do bring it home to find the device wasn't worth your money, that's what return policies are for!

Stop making such a fuss about Apple "owing you" anything, and make decisions appropriate to you and your situation. Despite the fact that you have been loyal to Apple's gems and gifts in the past, if this one doesn't cut it for you then there are plenty of other phones out there on the market for you to choose from. For some people, such as owners of the iPhone 3GS who have just finished up a two-year contract, this is going to be a huge improvement. Maybe not so much for iPhone 4 users like myself. But that's why I'm not buying the 4S. Apple knows that the majority of iPhone users are on standard two year contracts with their carriers, and the majority of these users are likely to stay with their handset until that contract ends. They know this and that is why over the past few years of iPhone releases they have alternated between releasing a complete redesign, and releasing an incremental update focussing on the internals, every year. Regardless of where you enter the cycle, the year to year upgrades might not seem like much but at the end of your two year cycle when you are wanting to upgrade, the change is huge.

  • The iPhone was released.
  • The iPhone 3G was released, and while not a huge upgrade for iPhone users being only a redesign and the addition of 3G (though that may be huge for some), a massive upgrade for non-iPhone users.
  • The iPhone 3GS was released, and while there wasn't a great deal of change for iPhone 3G users, there was both a redesign and a huge speed increase for iPhone users.
  • The iPhone 4 was released, and since the iPhone 3GS was released with a great speed increase, not so much of a jump for them. iPhone 3G users, however, get a redesign and a huge speed increase.
  • The iPhone 4S has now been released. iPhone 4 users have already been giving the great new redesign and new features like the retina display and FaceTime, so it is mostly just a speed increase and Siri coming to them here. But for iPhone 3GS users, again there is a redesign and a huge speed increase available here.

    That is all.

  • Every year it was released, the state of the industry was different. Expectations are also based on auxiliary knowledge.

When the 3G came out it was like 10 years ahead of its time. Now the 4S is like 8 months behind its time.

Why are people so salty there wasn't a redesign? Is that all they care about is that a phone looks new so they can show it off and show people they have the new iPhone?

Yes, the whole world is salty. The redesign was the correct thing to do, but they couldn't/didnt deliver.

No they don't. They really don't.

The only thing you're entitled to is the freedom to not buy the fu*king thing.

Did you really need to cuss about that just there?

They misled people by giving away absolutely no information?

Exactly. Remember how they made it clear they were only introducing iOS 5 at WWDC?

Something like that would have been the responsible thing to do and THEY KNEW what we were all expecting.

Um, like I said, they have practically unlimited funds. They have all the money, and all the people to make anything they can dream up. They could have done everything they did and more.

THE PROBLEM IS THE IPHONE 4 IS ALREADY INSTANT RESPONSE

Improving the speed of something already almost perfect speed, sucks.

The 3G was slow and there was no competition at the time. A 3GS made sense.

They know what they did. Will they explain themselves to the masses? Where was Johnny Ive?

If they are gonna stop making cool products, at least pay off the national debt....

Apple didn't mislead anyone directly. But by waiting a year and a half to upgrade the iPhone, and releasing just a minor rev of the iPhone 4, well, lets be honest, they kind of did this to themselves.

Nobody is saying they misled people directly. But in a roundabout way of implied expectations and patterns.

IF you look at the OP its a simple 1-liner: "do you FEEL misled"

Why is everyone acting like the question is: "Did apple make an announcement implying a redesigned 5 and then not deliver on it??"

Thats NOT the question.

Some people act like apple owes an explanation for the last 16 or so months where they didn't provide any updates about hardware. The problem is, Apple has never stated that they were going to provide a new phone every 12 months. They have historically yes, but that doesn't put the on a schedule to do so, and if you expect and will be pissed at Apple that they won't follow the schedule that YOU want/believe they should, then you're setting yourself up for failure.

If you look at the competition then there's no comparison. Android may have close specs, but Android still is laggy and isn't as smooth as the iPhone 3GS (Let alone iPhone 4/4S). Or are any Android phones as sturdy and as well built as the iPhone.

Don't get me wrong, I would gladly jump ship from iOS and go to Android any day of the week, I'm not an Apple fan boy, I just want a good solid phone, and in my opinion any phone with Android has yet to deliver that.

Key point here - Apple drives rumours by bringing out great products previously. Rumours only speculate on what we think Apple are 'reasonably' capable of producing based on their track record.

Not producing any kind of hardware redesign was quite a shock to most people.

By going by the update pattern didn't we get just what they did last time? 3 to 3Gs and now 4 to 4s. So shouldn't have we expected this?

Second guess my wants and needs? First of all, I don't get what you're trying to say...

Its not just US freaking out. Thats whats freaky.

EVERYONE on Twitter was calling this a lame release! Its not even a trending topic anymore! Normally it would be trending for like 2 days straight after a release. 16 Months and it only trended 4 hours????

Everyone on Facebook is complaining too. Everyones status is clowning on the release.

Everyone on here...

Everyone.

Finally, I thought I was the only one that relied on my friend's Facebook statuses to form my opinion on large financial purchases and the future of technology. Glad to see there are others on Macrumors!

Disappointed, yes. Mislead? No, nothing was ever confirmed or promised.

Exactly. Nothing was promised, just a bunch of rumors. I was disappointed but what can you expect, we might be expecting something bigger and better come WWDC 2012.

No misleading done at all IMO. They follow a very organized system where it is tied to the contracts people sign to have their phones. Let the iPhone 4 owners enjoy their 4, let the 3GS owners enjoy an upgraded 4 with some nice solid upgrades, and let the 4 owners get a completely new design when their time comes.

No matter what the 4S is going to sell like crazy while people are still buying the 4. 15 people at my office bought the 4 and are completely amazed at quality after having their droids/other brands.

Thought I'd use Wolfram Alpha to answer your question for obvious reasons.

Please see attached (in both spellings to appease the spelling police who would inevitably mentioned something had I not)

I think your sense of entitlement is getting in the way of the function of your cerebral cortex.

It's now very clear that apple has a 2 year release cycle. iPhone 3g/gs iPhone 4/s Nothing different here. Trouble is, why did you

A: Expect a new device

B: Expect Apple to provide you with an explanation when you didn't get a new device?

mis·lead   [mis-leed] verb, -led, -lead·ing.
verb (used with object)
1.
to lead or guide wrongly; lead astray.
2.
to lead into error of conduct, thought, or judgment.

Apple didn't lead anyone, and so they could not have mislead anyone, regardless of how people feel. People mislead themselves.
