You didn't screw yourself, but I guarantee this type of thread will be repeated many times as people realize they should've bought larger.

You have a lot of good solutions above...good luck and have fun!! :)

Wow, I have quite a few large text book PDFs. Some are so large they are very slow to use (1000 page scanned). these are all less than 1GB.

Those 4G ones must be for smart people they're so large :)

You have to remember that iTextbooks have more than just text and pictures. They also have embedded videos, 3D animations and interactive widgets which all add to the size considerably. As an example, a mere 2 chapters (51 pages) of "E. O. Wilson's Life on Earth" is ~1.4GB in size (once installed). I can't bear to think how much space a 20 chapter book would take.

Hmm well yeah it's too late to change it.

Oh well I'll just have to make due with 16GB. And it is engraved so I can't return it lol.

Oh well!

I you guys keep saying I should use the cloud for more storage... but.. use it for what?? Photostream I guess?

I'll just need to buy more iCloud storage if that's the case I guess. Right now I don't use photostream because I just have the free 5GB of storage.

Also : camera connection kit plus 16gb SD card = $40 / 50? less? You can transfer stuff to and from that (pictures and movies anyway) as long as they are in the right format.

I ordered the 16gig model and don't at all feel like it's going to be a problem, but I guess it depends on how a person uses their iPad. I had the 16gig previously and it was always fine. I personally don't plan on storing much content onboard. I'm a big fan of using mine for Flipboard, Facebook, e-mail, Hulu+, and I will load the occasional digital movie if I'm traveling.

You'll probably be able to work around the amount of storage. You can store all your content on your desktop and just sync what you need to the iPad. I have a 32 GB iPhone with 15 GB free with no effort to conserve space. I have 720 songs (3.1 GB), 8 videos (8.2 GB), 177 photos, and 64 apps. HD movies will probably take up the most amount of storage on my iPad.

Dropbox (2GB) can help, as can Box.net (5GB). There are plenty of cloud services that have good clients for iOS.

EDIT: 4shared (10GB) and Pogoplug (5GB) have decent iOS clients as well.

After seeing the size of the apps I would also be concerned. I would call Apple and see what they could do; however, you could always refuse shipment. Apple would have to issue you a refund as you never accepted the item.

I would think it would be similar to personalized iPod. The terms state for engraved items:

"If the item is returned unopened in the original box, we will offer you a refund based on your original method of payment."

Edit: And that statement was from Apple for returns of personalized iPods.

16, 32, 1024 GB are just storage. They can become too little or too much depending on your use of them.

Even 4 GB would grant entertainment.

Remember that most people have two devices: an iPad and iPhone, and you need to think in terms of the storage capacity across both. I have gone from 32 + 32 (which I never came close to filling) to 16 + 16 which, using iCloud as Apple intends, is more than ample for me.

Apple wouldn't be selling 16GB iPads if they were, as some are claiming, effectively useless!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.3.4; en-us; Sprint APX515CKT Build/GRJ22) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)

I did the same thing, I purchased the 16gb iPad and regretted not getting the 32gb. I called apple 3 times to make sure that I could return it even though I had it engraved, and their answer was yes. ill be using my 16gb iPad and if its not enough, ill return it.I ordered the 32gb but won't have it until 3 weeks.

Edit. Just to be on the safe side go ahead and call Apple and they will let you know.

I think for the apps the more the better, & they are only getting bigger. For everything else, theres's the cloud.

There are wifi drives you can use with the iPad also. Seagate, Kingston & air stash are 3 I know of. I actually have Kingston & the air stash. To put movies or music or docs on themselves conserve space on the iPad itself.

I say try it put, think about your needs & what you plan to put on it.

I think everyone needs to quit panicking. When you get the device, if you find it isn't working for you, you can return it to Apple.

Breathe in, breathe out. Repeat.

This. There's a bit of mass hysteria here. You have 14 days to return it or swap it out if you don't like it. Everybody just needs to relax. It's still an iPad. It's still going to do everything an iPad does. Get it home. Load it up with what you want on it. See how much room you have to play with. If you find that you're going to be drastically inconvenienced shuffling things around or won't have things you need, call or go to a store and take care of it next week.

It's panics like this that make getting through to customer service take forever. Everybody needs to just calm themselves.

16GB iPad orderer and proud!

Exactly. It all depends no how YOU use it.

I had 16GB 1 and 2 and never came close to running out of space.

I think you guys are missing the point. The apps are larger now then they were on your iPad 1 or 2 because of the retina graphics. I read an article that said that just the base apple apps have increased in size by 2-3x. I guess what you're saying will work as long you only keep what you plan on using and deleting the rest, but the balancing act would probably get old after a while.

"The applications developed by Apple have been upgraded to support the Retina Display. For example Keynote was previously only 115MB but its latest version is 327MB. Numbers is up from 109MB to 283MB, Pages moves from 95MB to 269MB, and iMovie from 70MB to 404MB." http://www.techradar.com/news/compu...y-makes-new-ipad-apps-up-to-5x-larger-1071126

Personally I would go with the largest you can afford and keeping the 32GB as the minimum, unless you are comfortable doing a juggling act with your data.

Hmmm... while I'm not panicking. I am concerned with just how much I will be able to keep on my iPad. I bought a 32GB after changing my mind on the 16GB. After the order was processing, I thought about calling and switching to the 64GB, but with it being my first ever iPad, I figured 32GB should be enough.

Now, with the last few posts concerning books, I have to ask just how large are typical book files? I mainly like to read for my own enjoyment. However, I also read to learn a subject from time to time and during those times, can easily cross reference information between 3-5 books. One of the lures for me with the iPad was to be able to "flip through" the different books without having so many physical books surrounding me. But with 2GB files for just a few chapters? Maybe that won't be happening.

If this is just for one particular app or certain books, then ok. Otherwise...

It definitely all depends on how you use the device. I had a 16GB iPad and never got close to filling it up so I have another 16GB on preorder. I have a 32GB iPhone and it's not even half full. I tend to keep most of my files on my computer and only sync what I need at the time though. For example, I only sync books or movies I want to read/watch to the iPad and all my music is on my phone - well, a least the playlists I want to listen too. I have an iPod classic that holds all my music. I am not a fan of having a ton of files on the iPad to wade through, but that is just my opinion. It all depends on what you will be doing with it.

I've never used iBooks, but Kindle books tend to range from a few hundred KB to a couple of megs. My largest Kindle book, an almost thousand page programming reference book with diagrams and things, is 8 MB. I can't expect that the sizes for ordinary text-only books would be terribly different in iBooks. I think the astronomical file sizes they're talking about will only apply to textbooks and other iBooks that make really heavy use of all the multimedia features. No book without heavy multimedia content will come anywhere close to that.

2GB for an iBook?? Where did you read that. I really hope it's not true.

I think 2 GB are going to be the higher end games like Infinity Blade and what not. I doubt iBooks will see any increase at all and stay at the few MB range.

16gb is plenty. You just won't be able to keep movies and lots of music on it. If you use pandora, netflix, hulu type stuff and some games you will still have plenty of room.

....

I just submitted an app for app store approval two nights ago. Up until the iPad announcement the app was ~3.8MB. I spent the weekend updating the artwork and the new binary weighs in at ~34MB. This is for a relatively small (graphically speaking) app.

Thanks for that clarity. I don't need multimedia for a book and at most, I'm thinking there may be some charts and a still pic here and there as illustrated reference material in the books. Ok, whew... I'm good again!

Seagate makes a wireless 500GB HD for iPad for your photos

Yes!

For photos though, I would add if I might, use a photo storage site. I put everything in albums in shutterfly now. I like it because it's unlimited, they have ios apps & I can print at target if needed. Or my wife can, who is the boss of that. Lol.
