"Did Jobs choose a fatally flawed design because it looked good?"

No. Jobs chose a fatally flawed design to make more money.
Cue "Bumpers".

Plain and simple, the plan, while blatantly obvious, is really genius.
You really think they would design a phone that had such a fatal flaw and release it?

We all know Apple's success comes purely from it's marketing strategies.
It's Apple Marketing, and it's working, again.

My iPhone 4 works better, as a phone, than my 3GS did. But to be fair, my wife's iP4 has exhibited some issues with yellow spots (that have mostly gone away now) and the antenna issue. So I'm not saying the problems don't exist, like some people. But, fatally flawed? I disagree.

Are you saying that you have access to two iPhone 4's that react differently to the reception problem at the same location? If so could you please post some pictures / clips?

The iphone 4 is a beauty, but I still can't belive they made the front and the back of glass that can brake after one drop, I think it's a very very stupid decision, and reminds me of this scene from the movie Idiocrazy.

No Major design flaw...

Major design flaw? No I don't think so. Unexpected from their standpoint, yes. It caught Steve with his pants down.

It can be solved at very small actual expense to apple. Which makes me wonder why it was not caught and dealt with during Q/A testing.

Perhaps Apples engineers need to re-invent the processes they use to test the iPhone prototypes in real world environments.

What I don't get is. Why not have the gps wifi antenna inside and the ENTIRE metal band is the 3G antenna. PROBLEM SOLVED!

And yes, iPhone4 looks and displays sooooooi good

Oh, the irony. I kid, I kid. :D

Good thing mine can easily make calls and browse the internet perfectly.

What iPhoneZ is describing is a paperweight. What kid wants something that doesn't do anything?

Thank god my iPhone makes calls and browses the internet exceedingly well. in fact web browsing is nearly as fast as my less than a year old top of the line 15 inch Macbook Pro.

Sharp edges don't look that good IMO. I held my friends iPhone 4, and the sharp edges didn't feel good AT ALL in hand. It is a flawed design... That's why I'm waiting for iPhone 5.

That is one of the downfalls to such a pretty design. I liked the way the first iPhone, 3G, and 3G feel in my hand. The iPhone 4 can be a little uncomfortable.

Well no Apple case has ever been made/promoted like a bumper since the iPod Socks.

There is a reason the bumper exists. Otherwise Apple would not have gone into the saturated case business.

Um, I had assumed Apple did the bumpers as a kind of nod to, "yes, it does have a glass back and some people are going to not trust that and want protection." I think the name even implies that it is supposed to take impact for the phone.

Seriously how the **** can you hold a phone 'wrong'?? Do people actually think about where they're saying?

Um, one of my old Nokia's in the handbook for it would tell you how not to hold the phone. So yes, Apple's not the only one who says not to hold the phone a certain way. The problem isn't with them telling you not to hold the phone a certain way. The issue is if they could have placed the antennas better so that it didn't affect how most people tend to hold the phone so as not to make it inconvenient for them to hold it in a way not to affect reception. But... one article from some engineer mentions part of hte problem is the FDA does not allow them to put the antenna near the face, meaning it has to be towards the bottom of the phone, more where your hand is. Plus, Apple was trying to go for a space saving design by putting the antenna there to save space internally and being efficient with design. Which makes it more limited what they can do.

So, you have a trade off. A smaller phone with bigger battery cause they have the space to do it for an antenna that is going to be a little more in the way of how you hold the phone. I personally think it's a good trade off (I like small). Some people don't. *shrug*. If it's that bad for you, get a different phone. But don't act like everyone has the same needs as you or should find it just as important as you enough to not want the phone.

Personally, I will be very happy if they find a software fix for it so that it's not so much a trade off. But, overall I'm happy with the phone despite the flaw so I'm not returning it over it.

Yeah, this bugs me more honestly. Already you see videos of drop tests where it only lasts three drops (shoot, stops working after one). My old iphone has survived several drops, certianly more than the drop tests (or some stories on here) show. I have a case not because of hte antenna problem, but because of hte I know I'm a klutz and I don't trust this phone to not easily break.

And you can say, don't drop it. But it's a cellphone. It's a small device that people take in and out of pockets and purses and place in pockets and purses (where it could fall out) and basically put it in situations that are more likely to have it drop (it's not like a desktop that you put in one spot and leave it there). Cellphones should be designed to be able to handle at least some abuse cause it will happen.

This is the voice of a man (Jobs) that is never told no. This is the voice of a man who is worshipped. Tens of thousands of fanboys alone, buy whatever they put the Apple logo on, this is no surprise. He's going to tell the people whatever he thinks he can get away with.

To the topic: As mentioned earlier, product decisions are made by a committee of people within a large company like Apple. No, it was probably not chosen by Steve all by himself. I'm sure he had input and the power to overturn the decision if he felt like it. But I bet it was a group of trusted employees that chose the design.

It's somewhat obvious that the problem is this phone was not subject to comprehensive testing, otherwise Apple would have identified and fixed the issue.

That said, there is one more possibility. Apple is not only good at keeping secrets, but they also have some of the best intelligence regarding what the competition is doing. I'm sure they were aware of the impending announcement of the Motorola DROID X. This is a phone that is a serious competitor in the market place. Apple was eager to put the new iPhone in the hands of their loyal customers, before they were tempted to try something else. So the iPhone was rushed to market partially tested.

There has been a lot of buzz and sales of the Android smartphones. Given the fact they are so new in the cellular space, they have done a remarkable job. Each month that goes by, Android gets closer and closer to being a very viable mature OS. Competition is good and Android is pushing Apple to get better.

On this evidence it seems to be pushing them to get sloppier... I think you're right though, despite the impressive sales, Apple is starting to feel the heat.

160,000 android phones activated every day is nothing to be sneezed at. Plus, Android is just about taking the lead on the feature front. Google's streaming music solution is due in August (looked very impressive at I/O) and Apple's rival version is still nowhere to be seen. Plus there's the impending Google TV.

And as if that's not bad enough, they've snapped up Palm's WebOS designer and are focusing on UI for the next release.

I know the fanboys like to tell themselves otherwise, but there are genuine reasons for Apple to fear google right now.

What iPhoneZ is describing is a paperweight. What kid wants something that doesn't do anything?

you must not know much about kids toys.

anyway, i'm not saying it's a paperweight. it's a great camera/vidcam/ipod/pda/game device. just can't be described as a phone until you can make calls and browse the web while holding it in your hand.

Fancy that ...... a consumer buying something and expecting it to WORK.

Isn't that how it's supposed to be.........

Sigh...I give up.

It's CONSUMER TECHNOLOGY. If it's a commercial jet they test it for weeks to make sure it can fly. iPhone 4s are not critical technologies. It's a phone. If the early shipments have flaws or if the iPhone 4 will be a black mark on Apple, so be it. There's a next one more thing coming in a year and people are still buying.

Would you be expecting the same standards of quality from Dell or HP? Answer that for yourself honestly. Apple sold 600k phones in a day. Welcome to the big leagues where sometimes a distinctly substantial portion of the deliveries fail, often with little to no impact on the bottom line.

Sure, expect it to work, but don't be surprised if it doesn't.

Apple made an iPad case.... there was no technical reason. I think they just make them to make more money- i paid $40 for mine and it couldn't cost them more than 30cents to make. Maybe the bumpers are also basically fancy rubber bands that they can sell for $30. No other reason they push them other than they sell.

your thoughts?

Thats the worry. Why else would they put the antenna on the outside where everyone has known forever not to do.

How could Apple possibly not have known about this?
How could Apple engineers not have warned Jobs?
Were they intimidated? Afraid to tell the boss bad news about his cool design?

But even then, they could have put some clear plastic or coating over the metal on the bottom of the phone.

Or left the metal rim but put the antenna on the back glass.

Its really more like they simply didn't realize how bad reception would be when in contact with skin.

Absolutely amazing.

What's even more amazing is that you actually believe what you just said. It's a shame that Apple didn't have some of you brainiacs in their engineering department when they designed it. You guys could have saved them from making such an obvious mistake.

You know, I've heard a few people spout this nonsense and I just have to shake my head in disbelief. Are there people out there that actually believe that Apple would purposefully design a phone that you would have to put a case on to use so that they could sell a $30.00 bumper? Incredible!

Sharp edges on the iPhone 4 ... just like the current MacBook Pro's ... no need for it.

Design flaw (sharp edges) appearing in more of their products instead of less, MacBook Pro's, Magic Mouse, iPhone 4 - ridiculous.

people are always complaining about sharp edges on the Macbook Pro and now the iphone. OMG, is your skin made out of tissue paper?

i dont get it. does not bother me one bit!!!!

Hm.. you definitely know peoples' skin is not made of tissue paper.. and you also know they're complaining.. so it must affect them in some way.

Money is money sir.
$30*The 600,000 preorders = $18,000,000 in extra revenue.
Remind you that's only including iPhone preorders, not including future purchases as well as people who will purchase multiples.

These things are flying off the shelves so obviously the plan is working.
Every product they make is made with the intention to increase profit.
They just happened to make one big ticket item have to rely on a smaller ticket item for an under-the-radar boost.

It's not really such a hard concept to grasp.
