I don't think the design is "fatally flawed," I do think everyone is blowing this out of proportion without any scientific evidence

Damn. I've heard it all now. Why the hell would anyone need scientific evidence when they can CLEARLY SEE the bars on their phone dropping when they hold it a certain way? Do they need Steve Jobs to tell them that what they're seeing with their own eyes is not valid?

It's a bonus feature. You can make calls, and in weak signal areas, you can hang up by holding the phone a certain way.

:D That had me lol.

Personally, I think they thought the antenna around the case was a good idea but they definitely were aware of possible issues with the science of it. Thus, the bumpers were made and very strongly sold during the keynote. So yes, we have a more advanced phone that's the smallest size on the market for its specifications, but many people just want the thing to work perfectly out of the box.

You make some very good points. And I think this is why the great majority of i4 buyers, like me, will keep the phone and hang in there with Apple until the bugs are worked out.

I also think they must have known about the downside of this antenna and so created the bumpers as a fix. The problem was the time pressure of the launch date but not having these colored bumpers available yet (because the need for bumpers came up too late to have them all for the release).

Well no Apple case has ever been made/promoted like a bumper since the iPod Socks.

There is a reason the bumper exists. Otherwise Apple would not have gone into the saturated case business.

No no no, not just "a certain way" but more specifically the same way Apple demonstrates holding the phone - in the left hand - minus maybe a few millimeters in terms of palm/finger placement - that's the big issue.

If it works for Apple in all their print/press/marketing/videos, why not for everyone else, eh? :D

Even Steve Jobs himself holds it the same way everyone else does - it's not just about dropping calls on 3G when the phone is upside your head, it's about the fact that it loses signal and service when it's held in the left hand which is how the predominant number of people hold it (and using the right hand/index finger to operate it).

That's what's important... because The Man himself, Steve Jobs, says so. :p
