I will be buying a Macbook Pro for college soon and I did not make my decision just over looks, it was kind of both but more on the functionality even though the looks also won me over the backlit keyboard, Firewire, aluminum unibody, etc.

It's pretty.... but the main reason for why I ended up going Mac would definitely have to be OSX. My god. I friggen hate Windows now. I die a little everytime I have to bootcamp for something.

Yes and no.

I have bought the Mac because of functionality, but I've bought the MBP because of looks and having more trust in the unibody over the plastic MB.

My reasons were
Ability to install windows since I had not used a Mac in some time
Hardware specs intel 25w CPU, non intel graphics ddr3 ram
Metal body/chassis the machined aluminum unibody was more than expected
High quality display this is why I began leaning toward a mbp rather than a thinkpad

Do not get me wrong because I do value appearance but at the same time I like how thinkpads look, as not everyone does, and appearance is not at the top of my list when buying a laptop.

I like the design of the MBP, and the operating system that comes with it. As others have said, I like the clean design, and that it's not loaded down with plastic accents and blinking lights like similarly priced PCs. (Not to mention that Windows doesn't come on it...I hate Windows.) My choice of getting a MacBook Pro was a combination of the Mac OS, portability, strong build quality, reports of reliability, and aesthetics.

As much as I wanted a lenovo thinkpad for reliability, I couldn't live with myself if I chose to get it. They look like laptops from the 90s.

Not to mention the cheap plastic look of windows laptops in general (not all, but many)

Ugh, yes. I can't stand the way PC laptops look. Most of them are bulky and plasticky with massive bottom cases and lights blinking everywhere...I bought an Acer (later sold) earlier this year after my iBook G3 died and I was embarrassed to take the thing out in public, just because of how butt-ugly it was. I think the Vaios and some of the speciality HPs are the only decent-looking PC laptops out there.

There are a few brands of PC laptops out there that are basically copying the MBP or MBA designs but I won't buy them. I will never buy a PC with my money. Having to work with Windoze at work is degrading enough :D

Well, MBPs have an extremely minimalist design... that's Apple's style, and to most, simple means style. This is true in some cases... but maybe not to trekkies... they might go for the iPad though, since it somehow was said to appear in the movie. Well... a device that is iPad-ish, that is. They might prefer laptops from Dell... you know... Alienware.:p Alienware laptops look like they dropped from space, hence the name. Or maybe the aliens threw it to Earth and got themselves a MBP in exchange, haha.;) I voted for 'yes' because I've been looking for a laptop that is both pretty and functional. The form factor of the MBP is really good and the functionality is even better, with OS X. Aluminum body, illuminated keyboard, glass trackpad, magsafe connector, thin design, and everything tapered.:apple: It's just so darn pretty... yup... I said it alright

Longtime thinkpad user. Switching to Mac for first time. A good friend of mine is all about Mac's but he is completely obsessed with how they look over form/functionality. I swear if Mac specs started to suck he would go down with them to the end if it "looked" better than other computers.

I give almost zero emphasis on "prettyness". Form factor is useful in some sense, a 3" thick laptop that is 10lbs is not easy to lug around. However I can do without the shinyness and aluminum brush finish.

Poll basically is asking was prettyness one of the MAJOR factors in your decision?
When you buy a product like a laptop, you buy it because it has certain hardware components that suit you, features that you need and (why not?) how it looks. The design is very important for ANY product on the market. Every company invests huge amounts of cash in design, be it a MacBook Pro or a simple pen... Design is also part of the product, just like USB port is... it is something you pay for and is something that should influence your decision making.
That being said, it is not sane to buy a computer only because of its looks, but for some people certain features are more important than others.

I voted yes. I am only 17 and nothing I do would really require a MBP's performance level. I could deal with any PC running Windows 7 and I could've gotten an extremely high performing one for as much as I am going to pay for my MBP. Yes I am buying it because it is sexy, sleek, thin, and faster than my current notebook, and has a webcam. I also like the OS very much. I figured hey its my money, I can afford it, and I like to have nice things. Especially shiny things that perform well.

This :D

I'm not buying a new MBP because it is pretty, I am buying because it has the specs I want in the form factor I want along with the screen resolution that I need (15" high-res). It also runs my preferred operating system that has the applications I need (Adobe) while still keeping Unix at its core. I also like the aluminium body for its extra strength and durability. I have seen too many plastic laptops fall to pieces, even my old macbook has cracks in the outer shell from normal use (It is 4 years old now.)

It looking nice is just another added benefit.

Pretty was a small factor, but I mostly bought it because of the hardware and Mac OSX

I bought it because it is pretty and it has the best os. It can keep up with my active lifestyle. Other computers I feel are so drab and dated.

I bought mainly for usability but I wouldn't call my MBP 'pretty'. I'd rather reserve that word to describe attractive people from the opposite sex, flowers, pink poodles with stupid bows tied everywhere etc. 'Neat', 'tidy', 'uncluttered', 'minimalist', 'appealing', 'desirable' yes but 'pretty' no.

Lol after a couple days of looking at the Macbook Pro, i actually find the aluminum kind of ugly. It looks almost white. I also have the AG option so the screen does not have the nice black bezel. Good thing specs > looks for me :p I will be covering up 90% of the aluminum with a black hard case and a black vinyl overlay for the inside though so whatever :)

If it was black aluminum, now that would be nice...the company that mods your MBP for you charges ~$600 for that though :p

more overpriced then a normal macbook pro http://www.colorwarepc.com/

MBP's really do have outstanding esthetics, but that is only a part of the overall package. The OS is what did it for me.

No. I just needed a fairly powerful laptop capable of running OS X with a larger screen. But I also bought a white plastic MB because it was too cute not to own while being capable of doing daily stuff.

No. I picked MacBook Pro because it was the only 15" Apple laptop and they had just discontinued the Powerbook G4 at the time.

well, I got my first computer in 1995 when I started university...it was a PowerPC Mac. I thought it was great and so much easier to use than the DOS/early windows PCs that were available at the time.

Unfortunately, compatibility and price pushed me towards a Dell computer when I bought my next computer and it ran windowsXP. I had that Dell for 8 years! before I finally got fed up with it being so out of date.

I bought my new Apple computers this summer because I remembered how much I loved my 1st Mac and because I wanted better functionality with iTunes and my iPods and ipad.

I have office for Mac on my systems so I have complete compatibility with work.

The Mac looks amazing, is very hip/cool/hot/chic etc and works 1000x better than my old dell.

I am happy all around for buying this product......but yes, I did buy the MBP because it is pretty.

No. I bought it for it's functionality.

Back in July of 2007, I bought an iPhone and was so impressed with it, that I had to buy a 15" MBP a week later. I kept hearing how the iPhone and Macs were designed to work together like with iPhoto. I wasn't disappointed.

I later bought a 13" MBP again for the functionality. I liked the lighted keyboard, the bluetooth and of course the software built in. I sold that after six months and bought my 15" MBP that I have now. I bought it for the bigger screen and the two speakers amongst all the other things mentioned above, plus the 4GB ram.
