Can't use non-Retina screens anymore. I use an iPad 3 and a rMacBook Pro.

No Retina no way.

completely disappointed in apple for not including this. major rip off. And still selling base model for $329 is crazy!

And I can't imagine getting a mini w no cellular service when the whole point of this MINI size is for portability reasons!!

Returned the 3 after trying it for a week as I thought the retina was no big deal after comparing side by side with my 2 and also the 3 felt a bit too clunky. The screen on the 2 is very good.

Still very happy with the 2 and use it every day but it will soon be joined by the mini. Ideal for out and about use. Retina would be a nice to have but I'm not bothered one way or the other!

It's more to do with the certainty that next year's Mini will be everything this one could and should have been that makes it easy for me to wait.

This is like a prelude to the proper Mini. Even so, a Mini will only ever be a vanity purchase for me because I'm perfectly happy with my ten inches. Apple will need to do better than a smaller version of something I sold back in March for me to feel gadget envy over their new baby.

I bet you would be hard pressed to see the difference between the displays between the retina iPad and the mini. Before blasting me on this, lets wait and see them side by side.

Waaaay too expensive

and this from a guy whose family has two 64GB WiFi/4G New iPads. To pay what Apple asks for a decontented, shrunken iPad2 makes absolutely no sense to me.

I voted no above, but I might get one. Many days I basically take a briefcase back and forth from work so that I can carry my iPad 3 to read on the subway. If I had the mini I could just slip it in a pocket and leave a bag at work for the days I need to take more stuff home with me. It would be very freeing to do my daily commute "bag less".

The screen is going to be pretty sharp as it is same number of pixels as iPad 2 compressed into a third less space. It will be sharper than any of my desktop monitors, I would assume.

I voted YES (the first option in the poll). Lack of retina ruins it for me. Otherwise a very beautfiful device same design as iPod touch 5. No retina is a joke, we no longer live in 2007 with the standard of 163ppi. Actually I wasn't expecting iPad 3 retina in the iPad Mini, but they could've put more resolution at least on par with the nexus 7. No retina 1024x768 makes this tablet DOA for me, despite everything else that I love about it. Not to mention it's 100% that they gonna put retina in next year's revision.

Disappointed it doesn't have a higher resolution screen, and think it's quite expensive at the price it is, but that's not prohibitive. Was considering the other 7" tablets out there, namely the Kindle Fire HD and the B&N Nook HD, but will probably go with the iPad mini.

The price is probably the killer for me - my needs and that price just don't match and that is particularly true for the features (no Retina and chip). Plus Apple just once again demonstrated that if you wait a few months you will get the mini with a retina screen and better processor for probably the same price. Yup you can say better is always coming but I, personally, think the prices for the mini are out of line with capability. For the WiFi only - no GPS eliminates a bunch of apps or capability for a bunch of apps.
Certainly if it had a Retina display it would be much more worth 329 and up, to me

The price, while I don't justify it, does include access to a much better app store and any ipad app will work.

We always knew it would not be retina, so no change of mind necessary.

Bought an iPad 3 because of retina display, but I do not notice it at all as long as I hold it very close to see details.

Was thinking of the Mini, but the specs were a disappointment to me, and the iPad 4 was a surprise. So I switched from Mini to iPad 4 for my next purchase. ;)

Me too tbh. I've needed to upgrade my iPad for a while anyway. :)

I'm buying an iPad Mini _because_ it doesn't have an IPS/retina screen.

I find the retina nice, but I'm not addicted / overly attached to them. Nor am I one of those that say "you can never go back"... there is no such thing as going back. It's just one of many choices.

Newer and different is not always better.

The current resolution of the mini is just fine.

Was holding out getting the Nexus for the Mini, but several factors have made me change my mind :(

iPad Mini
no retina, less storage, 2nd generation processer

Nexus 7
Better display, more storage, better quad core processer

I agree. I switch between retina iPhones and the iPad 2 all the time and I think it's laughable to say you can never go back.

Remember the first time you looked at that retina screen...you were certainly impressed. Unfortunately, as humans, we grow accustomed to such things.

It's like buying a new TV - when you are in the store comparing models, of course some look better than others - but if you bought one of the cheaper ones and used it for a week or so, you get accustomed to it and don't even think of the quality.

Gee - I was hoping to chat with my old pal .... but it looks like he's managed to do it again ...:p:p:p:p:p

Anyway, about Retina -- I'm undecided until I see the current mini screen.
I do appreciate my Retina iPad screen, but I certainly have no problem with my 11" MB Air screen.
Wait and see.
