That is utterly shocking, and one of the reasons I can't understand why international driving tests don't live up to some of the European ones (UK and Germany especially).

It's also why people make fun of US drivers so much. ;)

What was your eye doctor doing down there?

LoL now i was wondering how long it would take before someone made a joke lol but i can assure you he wasn't anywhere near that area No it was kind of heartbreaking when your told you can't drive and all your mates / family members all have cars and your the odd one out.

I ended up in Driver's Ed in high school because all the other classes I wanted were full and got a little slip after completing the class that allowed me to get my Driver's License without taking the test. I believe they do not allow that anymore (at least here in FL), but in all honesty I do not know why after a semester of Driver's Ed you wouldn't be any better than someone who never took the class and is about to take the test. I really did learn to become a better driver thanks to that class, and it was pretty exciting too... Especially when my instructor setup some cones and asked me to go zig-zag in between them. Wish I could redo that part with my current car... :D

Along with what you mentioned, people who don't know how to pass trucks, use the left lane as a driving lane, and those who wait until the last second to merge from a lane that ends even though there have been signs for 2 miles are among others that get to me. I see more than my fair share of these since I do nearly 85% of my driving on the highway.

Passed the first time for me, no parallel parking or any fancy turns...not even a left turn on my driving test.

That falls under road etiquette. The left lane is for passing only. If you're not passing move to the right lane. I don't care if you'll be turning left in 5 miles. Only go in the left lane when your turn in <1 mile away. What annoys me the most are the people who drive right next to each other. There are two lanes for a reason and it is not for who can drive the slowest. There is a reason why the autobahn is the safest road in the world. Along with general road maintenance, people there get the point of the left lane.

Frankly, I don't care if the speed limit is 30 MPH. If everyone is going 40 MPH, it is safer to go 40 MPH like everyone else. If you're so dead set though going 30 MPH be considerate and if you see cars behind you pull over and let them pass.

I think many speed limits are outdated in that cars get better and better handling. You can pretty much guarantee that 90% of drivers go 5-10mph over the speed limit.

I passed my drivers test the first time. I didn't have to parallel park... or even park for that matter. Basically I had to pull away from and pull up to a curb that was blocked off from other traffic. A bit ridiculous if you ask me. However while driving I think my instructor felt bad because there was a box in the road, a squirrel ran out in front of the car, and there was a bag of garbage in the road.

Written section of the test was simple. All you need is common sense. I know a girl that has failed the driving test 3 TIMES!!!

Connecticut I think is on the forefront of driving restrictions. We've had no cell phone laws for years (NY I think was first), Massachusetts has started the law recently. At age 16 you get your permit, at age 16.5 you get your license and can only drive your parents. At 16.75 you can drive your siblings. At 17 you can drive friends. Furthermore, teenagers are not allowed to use cell phones or anything with a "video screen" while driving, even if it's hands free.

Under the age of 18 you also cannot drive past 12. As of Aug 1 the curfew is 11. There are also rules being put in effect that to get a permit, parents must attend a class with the student drivers. Drivers ed hours may be increased. When I took it I had to have 20hrs of in class and 8hrs behind the wheel if I remember correctly.

CT has experienced quite a few teenage deaths in the past year or so. In pretty much all cases its teens being irresponsible and stupid. In some cases, its the parents too. If your kid has multiple driving infractions and accidents, would you buy them another car and let them drive?

Took driver's education in HS.

Automobile - Passed 1st time @ 14 (School Permit)

Plane - Passed 1st time @ 17 (Private License)

The OP's video is sad and scary to me. Metal beats flesh every time.

I also passed on my first time. It sucks that some people had to parallel park on their test. I did not have to. I guess it's not required in my county or something and very happy bout it :D

I failed my first written test (actually on a computer but whatever), but then took it again and passed. I did pass my driving test on the first time but I had a horrible headache and forgot my glasses, which made the drive interesting but uneventful. :D

What a horrifically unacceptable attitude.

Certainly in the UK, if there's a 30 limit, there's a 30 limit for a reason. In that bracket of speed limit, it is more important than in any other to be at or below said limitation. If everyone's going 40, they're all a bunch of retards - and if you join them, you're one too.

Yes, I break speed limits, but I do it out of town, in quiet areas where hopefully there aren't any other people around, let alone traffic. But to speed in an area where a limit has been set specifically to reduce the potential of casualties (as 30mph limits usually are), that really pisses me off.

Ok, the main issue here I'm getting at is safety rather than speed, but it's proven - no, it's common bloody sense - that at 30 you're far less likely to kill that small child than if you're going at 40.

It's not safer to do 40 in a 30 because 'everyone else did it'. That wouldn't fly here, you'd all get done for it.

*Hits head off wall at state of US drivers as a whole*

Wow I always thought parking and turns are a must in any road test. How would they check habits like shoulder checks if you don't have to even make a turn? No offense to the posters here, but I'm scared to be on the road with drivers who didn't even need to learn how to turn to pass their license.
I think road tests should be stricter. I've seen more than once people who switch lanes without signaling. Those drivers should never have been allowed to drive.

It is not safer to go 40MPH when the limit is 30MPH. I don't see the logic in that. If someone is behind you, you certainly shouldn't pull over and let them go over the speed limit. Why should I make way for someone who is blatantly disregarding basic driving rules and putting the lives of the passengers of their cars as well as other cars on the road in danger?

Me first time a few months ago, and I haven't driven since :(

Mate of mine passed on his fifth attempt last week

What is safer? A) 70% of the people on the road go 40 MPH, while the 30% go 30 MPH causing a back up and impeding the flow of traffic or B) everyone goes 40 MPH. The chances of an accident when everyone is going the same speed is lower then when someone doesn't bother to adhere to the flow of traffic. I don't know how the roads are in Canada( or the UK for the UK poster), but in the US, the roads and the cars can safely handle 40 MPH when the limit is 30 MPH granted people pay attention and stay a bit further back to compensate for the bit extra braking distance. They're are exceptions when you should follow the limit( school zones, in a city, neighborhoods, etc).

Hey

Don't want to be mean but:

If you fail the written test:

You don't know the rules and please stay off the roads for being dumber than a monkey that can pass that multiple choice test. Go back to the zoo.

But really

If you fail that in-car test then you need more practice with your parents in the care with you. If you are so nervous that a stranger (tester) in the car that you fail then please practice a lot more before you consider getting on the highways.

Sidenote
Last year in my area, 4 teens died in a car accident within 1/2 mile of school because the 17 year old driver was showing off and seen speeding. Life is too short if you live to 100, worse if you never make it to high school graduation.

Be safe and be a good driver, and put down that damn cell phone, they'll call you back.

I failed my permit test. But that is only because a) I over think tests and b) I didn't study.

But I passed the driving test. I think a major thing was that I told the grader he made me nervous. The guy who went beforenme told me that the grader was really strict but he helped me out a little.

They're not impeding the flow, they're driving the speed limit. You are impeding the flow if you are driving slower than the posted limit.

(also, I aced my last two driving tests)

nah, it's ridiculously easy here. I honestly thought it was hilarious when a few of my friends didn't pass the first time, it was so easy, but then, driving does come as somewhat of a gift to me so eh, whatever.

Passed with flying colours the first time out. My aunt flunked it like 4 times though..

Not even tried yet. I'll go either way since I'm a good bit of both parents. My dads a very good driver and my mum never passed her test. Starting lessons very soon though so we'll just have to wait and see, just get out of the way.

The flow of traffic is what everyone else is going. If everyone else is going 40 MPH, going 30 is impeding the flow.

The speed limits need to be updated, but won't because revenue would be down from the reduced number of speeding tickets.
