You missed my point. It is absolutely impossible that all 6 stores near me ran out of all the phones in 6 minutes but they were still available to ship for delivery on 09/19. The system says none of the phones are available for pickup in any store around me. That’s BS.
What does the one have to do with the other?

I'm using the 14-day trade-in ship window to determine that. As an aside, I just placed my pre-order for a black Air delivery just now (7:15pm CDT) and still got a 9/19 delivery date.

Years ago delivery dates jumped weeks or even months within a hour or two of the pre-order start time. Less than expected demand? Increased supply? Does it really matter?
Did you get the 512 version or will 256 suffice? I'm currently on the 13 Pro Max, but storage has been so-so.

I…see the 19th right now on the site?

Anyhow.

I feel like 'faring better' is interesting phrasing here since it actually means that demand was probably overestimated.
I sense that the iPhone Air is the prototype for half the foldable iPhone coming next year. It’s a proof of concept that they are selling.

Apple has shown extended lead times unrealistically for years, it’s a marketing tactic to create urgency for the sale. They’ll all be fulfilled within days of launch.

Yeah it's pretty nice if you don't mind the remoteness... I live in a little coastal village about an hour north of Inverness if you are familiar with the geography. My website has a carousel of photos from around the area I live, all taken on iPhone of course :) - www.broken.org.uk
GORGEOUS pictures!!! And all "shot on iPhone" 😍, impressive

On Friday 9/12 at 7:05AM CDT had ordered the Pro Max in Cosmic Orange 512GB showing 9/25 delivery, but changed last night to 9/19. The Beats Sierra Orange case has shipped and I'll receive on 9/17.

Interesting that the Deep Blue seems to be ready for in-store pickup sooner than any other Pro model...I thought it'd be the most popular colour this year. I guess the customers who opt for black went for Silver or Orange instead.

I don't know if this is accurate or not, but I got the impression over the years that whenever there is a new colour, that is the one that is usually the hardest to get. In this case that'd be Cosmic Orange.

14, 15, 16 and now 17 and I still haven't convinced myself that it's worth trading in my 13 Pro Max.
These phones are all still quite capable. My 12 Pro Max's performance is still quite good too, and it has 6 GB RAM which is the same as what the iPhone 15 has. The only issue was the battery health, but I had it changed this year so now it's at 100%. So the main reason I'm finally getting a new iPhone, the 17 Pro Max, has nothing to do with the OS performance, but the fact that I want a better camera. The new 0.5X/1X/2X/4X/8X camera is very attractive for someone like me with a 5 year-old iPhone. I will pass down the 12 Pro Max with its new battery to my kid.

Bout how ive thought for the last few years. Ive always been able to walk in or order online a new iphone days after launch to even a few weeks later (even though sites saying short supply).

I had the same problem with the Pro (Orange). At 503 AM PT the store let me in and it immediately said shipping to arrive 9/25. But I could pick up in-store on 9/19. So I'll end up picking up in store on the 19th. Works out better that way anyways to be honest - UPS/Fedex always ends up delivering the new phone at like 3 or 4 or 5 PM on launch day anyways. I'll have it earlier in the day this way. I'm just not looking forward to having to swap my phone in the store and have it take an hour or two. (do they have USB-C cables that can connect the two phones to make the transfer faster?)
They don’t provide cables afaik. Are you trying to trade in? I’ve always had much better success just doing everything at home then going back to the store within their 14 day trade in window. But if you have an iCloud backup it shouldn’t take that long anyway.

I usually do phone to phone transfer, or restore from iCloud, but then have to spend ages going through each app and re-entering passwords, or going through all the security again for banking apps etc

Was thinking of trying an encrypted backup and restore on computer to see if that would make any difference and copy all app passwords etc across?

I see a UPS entry when tracking by reference using my Apple order number. But the full tracking number is obscured, revealing only the last four digits.

Interesting I wonder with the passwords app and all in our apple ecosystems if that will be an issue the phone to phone certainly is easier

When they sell out right away people all complain they aren't available or that apple is holding them back intentionally to create a false sense of demand. When they don't sell out right away, people say over hyped or a failure etc.
