I strongly recommend
not going on a diet. Diets rarely work and you are more likely to gain additional weight as your body tries to prevent starvation in the future.
Rather I would suggest a change in lifestyle in which you change your eating habits. You should find foods that you enjoy eating and feel good afterwards about. You should avoid foods that give you an initial rush and then feel bad afterward. Avoid foods you feel addicted to.
Here are some suggestions:
1) Eat less processed foods by looking at the ingredients (avoid sugars, fructose, enriched items, too much salt, ingredients you can not pronounce). Fresh foods are the best.
2) Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. They should take up most of your plate. Try a wide variety and ones you enjoy.
3) Eat plenty of proteins found in beans, nuts, soy, and legumes.
4) Eat carbohydrates which can be found in whole grain products - whole grain pastas and breads. rice, and potatoes.
Common foods I enjoy in no particular order (you may enjoy others): oatmeal, flax seed cereals, soymilk, apples, oranges, raisins, carrots, salads, cabage, whole grain wheat breads or pita, brown rice, tofu, soy cheese, almonds, pecans, beans, whole grain pasta, asparagus, broccoli, green beans, potatoes.
Eating foods high in fiber tend to fill you up quickly.
I am a Vegan and do not feel that I am missing out on any foods. Vegans who do not eat much processed foods can eat all the time whenever they are hungry and loose weight. I lost 10-15 pounds without trying. Vegan can also easily get all the protein, Iron, and calcium they need by eating well balanced meals.
Good luck!
