3) There is and I have to admit it's not very convenient but there is: on your Mac or on www.icloud.com you can arrange groups where you put contacts in. These groups can now be excluded from DND with the DND settings menu on your iPhone.

I see how I can arrange/create a new group in icloud, but now how I can add that group to the DND, or exclude the contacts from it. Can you please further elaborate on what you mean? The DND choices on my phone are:

ALLOW CALLS FROM:

Everyone
No one
Favorite

GROUPS
All contacts

So how might this workaround be pulled off exactly?

It appears to be pretty clear that iOS/iPhone isn't for you, as multiple theses/posts on the subjects have pretty much established fairly well. Doesn't look like anything will change that, as multiple discussions seem to come back to that same eventuality.

Yes, you've said as much already, about twice now. Why you are continuing to hang around in a thread which you proclaim to disdain, and in which you are not wanted? Other posters are less defensive and continue to contribute interesting information to this discussion. You can make neither claim at this point.

We might have to add you to some sort of 'Do Not Disturb" list...

I call it like I see it, as appears to be the case with a number of others as well. Definitely hasn't preventing you from posting the same things and in multiple threads either. A number of people (me included) actually tried to assist in various ways in this thread, and at least one other one on the same type of topic it would seem, but quickly only got odd insinuations, at best, back for it. So mainly just trying to save others the trouble.

That said, it's a public forum, and you can certainly feel free not to read and/or reply to my posts.

Well you have to make a new Group, called DnDExceptions for example. You put those people in this group you want to be able to call you all the time. Then you can chose this group in the DnD settings menu. Voilá.

I wouldn't call this a workaround, its a intended solution, but I don't know why one cannot manage groups directly on the iPhone or even better directly chose people, this is really inconvenient, but groups aren't something a lot of people use I guess, but anyhow there should be a simpler way.

You have to log on to iCloud.com from windows/Mac/Linux and create the group from there. It will then sync to your phone and can be selected in dnd.

DON'T BUY iPHONE/iOS device. You will not be happy. I bought iphone/mac because im happy with them and i dont need what THEY DONT HAVE.

So be mature and buy you a nice android device

Well, none of these things are really "needed". No one needs a camera, an alarm clock, a vibration option, etc. Hell, most of us have no real "need" for a mobile phone at all.

What we are really talking about are useful features. And it's a shame that an otherwise beautiful phone is deficient in many areas when it comes to useful features.

What's up with the Control Center's 'timer' icon? When pressing it, it always go the timer instead of the alarm clock, even if the alarm clock is the last thing I used. Is this some sort of glitch on the iphone 4 or me making a mistake?

Surely Apple wouldn't have designed a phone with a shortcut to the timer, which almost no one would ever use, instead of something useful like the alarm clock, would they?

That's what Apple did, they made the timer icon go to what the icon actually refers to. It would be great to be able to customize the icons at the bottom (and/or the top) in Control Center, but at least in its initial version, so far, that isn't available (short of a jailbreak tweak perhaps).

Again a lack of Siri related "problem": I just tell Siri to "wake me up in 8 hour".
If you don't like it, you better get used to it, because it's going to be the way things are being operated more and more. (See Google Now, Or Microsoft's Cortana). Then again this is also the way I set up counters... ;)

You can claim, that you use this or that more often, but you won't argue that it is more logical that a sign with the caption "Malibu" actually leads you to Malibu, rather than leading you to your last destination? :D

I don't find the iPhone deficient in "many" areas that matter to me. I'm sure if one picked IOS apart there is room for improvement. The same could be said about anything manufactured/designed by man.

Your mileage may vary on what you deem necessary and required vs what I deem necessary and required.

Somebody is very lazy...common we know you are an android fan in this forum.
Realistic that all your iOS features takes 1-2 seconds more than android, so get real and stop trolling. We all know what you are already

i need a camera , iphone has, i need vibration, iphone has...you are not understanding, i dont need speed dial...difference from speed dial a number from android and dial a number from iOS is almost the same because the hardware is working very fast on iphone 5s.

wow...one click(half a second) away from alarm. We know we know..in that half of the second you will die

At least get a 5C, 4 will likely not support IOS8 and runs IOS7 pretty badly as it is.

he shouldn't get an iphone at all...he is not happy, don't you see ?!
Android is for him

Wow. Another stupid flaw. Two flaws actually -- no customization, and then making one of those short cuts go to a feature most folks never use, the timer….

I never want to speak commands to my phone, and one really shoudn't be forced to. Phones should be able to be operated with absolute discretion to have no noise coming from either you or the phone. I'm not sure why I would need to even point this out since it seems rather obvious.

So you're happy with phone features that you admit takes longer than android, and needs extra clicks to get to where you want to go? I guess if you're not a very discerning-easy to please consumer, these things are just fine. But some of us are used to better user design, increased efficiency, and more control, and thus it makes it very tough to make the switch to iphone in order to enjoy its own particular charms when one must give up so much to get them.

I'm not saying Android phones are great in all ways -- if they were, I wouldn't be tempted by the iphone at all. They are uglier, seem more prone to glitches, and have other weaknesses. But I just didn't realize that iphones had a whole host of serious flaws and drawbacks too, perhaps more serious in the end than Android.

Too early to say at this point. I guess I was just hoping that while Apple didn't offer quite the same level of features and customization as Android, something I knew going in, it would at least offer enough to live while enjoying all the great aspects of the iphone. Yet I'm being constantly shocked by the things iphone can NOT do...

If I do end up getting an iphone in a few months when my contract is up, I will get either 5S, or better yet, wait and see what the 6 offers. I'm sure the 6 will be the best one yet. Though I fear the 6 won't bother to fix any of the problems me and anyone else who are used to androids have with iphones. But there is always hope I guess, since these phones do tend to still features from each other from time to time, no?

Erm, I happen to use the timer a lot, but not the control center.

Apple is beefing up SIRI, you can be it will be doing more in the future. I don't like speaking commands to my phone either, so I don't.

I do not like Android as my phone at this point in time. It's irrelevant if something takes longer or not; I like the way IOS operates for the most part.

I too feel like I am use to better user design, increased efficiency but without tweaking the phone till my fingers come off. With an iphone and ipad, I'm kind of entreched in the IOS ecosystem and for me it works great.

You have to do what is best for you; the people in this thread have been more than helpful trying to understand your concerns and provide some work arounds for your issues. Apple stock is neither going to go up down due to pointing out of the obvious; what the IOS strenghts are and are IOS weaknesses.

While some things IOS can do better and in particular, what apple can do better in the native apps, I'm okay with at this point time. There are obviously a lot of others who think the same as apple sells a boat load of iphones. This likely will not change if they (meaning apple) update IOS to address your concerns.

For the love of god can someone please explain the difference to me between speed dial and favorites. I totally get the issue with the Do Not Disturb mode, and the idea of using groups to work around it. But I'm not understanding what is different or better between Android speed dial and iOS favorites.

Back in the day, when I had a land line, speed dial was something where you had to remember, or write on the phone itself on a little piece of paper, that #1 = Dad, and you'd put in Dad's phone number into the #1 spot. Obviously selecting "Dad" is better than "#1", so I'm assuming that's not what Android does.

If you think an android is up your alley, I would recommend just getting one now or staying with the one you have?, Apple is not likely to change their style of closed source and less megapixels for better sensors and things like that, though the 6 is pretty much guaranteed to have a bigger screen so if that is what you consider the problem I would just get a 6 ;) I do the 2 year upgrade 3g->4->5->6.. the cycle works pretty well.

Dude, iPhone and Apple are not for you, stay on the fragmented android with the cheap plastic phones. At least your daughter uses the best phone experience available! :apple:

Apple would sell twice as many phones as they do now if they weren't too stubborn, or stupid, to adopt some obviously beneficial features. The reason they alienate users like me is because of utter stupidities in thier design. They could pretty much attract EVERYBODY if they just make some obvious and much needed changes and leave Android in the dust. If they do go bigger in the fall, its an acknowledgement that their way isn't the best and a step in the right direction to making their phones better.

And I think you must be the only person who uses the timer function more than the alarm clock… Nice shortcut for those of you on a track team, but most of the rest of the world like to go sleep and wake up at certain times…

And it's "irrelevant if something takes longer or not?" Okay. Another outlier here…

Now, tell me, am I dreaming, or is there no way to turn off the vibration option for the alarm clock without doing some stupid workaround? Surely they would not have designed a phone with a flaw like that, would they?

Two attributes that can also be attributed to you, sunshine.

Now, since so many of you seem so offended and insulted that I have pointed out the many flaws of the iphone, let me take a moment to extoll some of its virtues in hopes of providing some comfort to you fanboys:

1. I like the messaging app for the most part, in that I can make the font nice and big and that the keyboard is very good. Same with email. Much better than my LG.

2. It's a nice looking phone and it seems to do the things it does do gracefully.

3. I like the app store better than the android version, and like that I can download apps from my mac air if I want.

4. Like how it sinks up with my mac air. I didn't think I'd care much about this, but it's a nice touch.

5. podcasts work better and are easier to operate than on my LG.

6. Like how I can dump of bunch of less frequently used apps into one folder, and thus have everything down to only using one home screen for now, nice and clean. (Though to be fair, I never tried something similar with LG so don't know if its possible there too.)

I'll add more to this list later.

Android has both. Speed dial AND favorites. That is what's better. I personally used speed dial, having no problem remembering that dad =1, but favorites are also offered for those who need it, though speed dial is less steps/faster.

Bit of a non-sequiter, but anyway, are you suggesting I'm wrong in my assement? Apple seems to be acknowledging as much if the rumors of the coming bigger screens prove true. Sounds like they are starting to get the message, at least in that area. Let's hope they keep up the good work. No reason they need to stick with dark ages technology and features in important areas just out of some odd pride or whatever. If were an Apple stockholder, I'd be praying they copy some of the more obvious advantages of Android to dramatically increase their market share.

That's one potential plan I'm considering. Wait for the 6, pray that they fix even just 2 or 3 of the 6 things I most hate about the iphone, and then compare that to the best Android on the market and make the choice then. There is always hope they will say something like "gee, would it kill us to do something obviously useful like add a notification light? Nah, so let's put on the 6!", isn't there?

Don't want to keep on getting stuck on this, even though it keeps on coming up, and from quite a few different users, but it seems the main misunderstanding here isn't about pointing out flaws or anything like that, it's about how someone might go about doing it. It's one thing to point out flaws and ask/talk about them, it's another thing to do it in a fairly confrontational manner (whether it was meant or not, as it still certainly came off and comes off that way).

No one here is really connected to Apple or has any influence with them or any of their decisions--people just decide what works for them or what doesn't (and there are almost always some trade-offs here or there no matter what device and/or OS is involved, people just decide what's fine for them. Those decisions are different for different people, but it doesn't mean that different people are somehow crazy, or addicts, or anything like that, simply because someone might disagree with what works for them vs. someone else.
