I just spoke with Apple and AT&T and I got the following answer:

Me: I am wondering if my shipping address has to match my billing address on my credit card or my phone bill.

Representative: Nope, it sure doesn't. However, the iPHone will be delivered to the address on the phone bill.

I asked if it can be changed to be delivered to another address, since I am going to law school elsewhere, to which the representative said that I had to contact the carrier regarding temporarily changing my address on my phone bill. I contacted AT&T and confirmed.

Thanks that is what I was looking for!

Next thing I am wondering is if my wife uses her card to pay for me will it work? Different name and she isn't on my account.

So, I'm on a Verizon Wireless family plan, and I am not the primary line. I need my iPhone shipped to my school address, not the billing address for the plan. Does this mean I can't have it sent to my school address? Or is there something I can do to amend this?

Just called AT&T and they confirmed that I can use my wife's credit card to pay for me

Is there a reason I can't just change the billing address(which is my home in Boston, MA) to the town where I'm at college(Ithaca, NY)? The billing address of everything is my actual home but will anything bad happen if I just switch it over for a couple weeks?

will this fix the problem of shipping it up here?

A little confused from this thread... My credit card billing address is my hometown where my parents live. I just updated my Verizon billing address to my college dorm (the plan is in my name and I am the sole line.) So if I preorder through Verizon or Apple and put my college dorm address, it will ship there?

that is correct. I changed my address with AT&T today. I went into the Apple online store and added the iPhone 4, it asked for my billing zip code and put the old one in, and said it was incorrect, added the new one and it worked. After the test I decided to order the iphone 4, for my nephew, and ordered it. The address is the same that I want the 4s sent to. The order completed on my AMEX, which has my original address on file.

So as long as my billing address with ATT reflects where I want my phone sent, it doesn't matter what my billing address on my card is?

Someone please answer, it will solve my dilemma as well

I just did a chat with the Apple Store. She said the billing address on file with your carrier MUST match your shipping address. The billing address for your credit card is not relevant and can be different. I just changed my billing address with Verizon to my work address and will pay with a CC billed to my home address, so fingers crossed it shows up at work with no issues next week. According to the Apple gal, this will work. Hope she's right.

Sounds like a solid, consistent answer. I just changed my AT&T address online. Then went in to apple.com and checked my upgrade eligibility, which requires the zip code. Used my old zip code, didn't work..tried the new one, and it returned the upgrade price ($449), so seems all set.

My paperless bill goes to an address in MN and my phone has an NC area code. Do I need to switch the billing info to my NC address even though it's paperless?

I was just told via Apple Chat that shipping information for preorders will be automatically sent to your carrier's shipping address, but if you call they can switch it for you post-preorder.

I'm worried now. What if my billing address is a P.O. Box? I was planning on apple shipping it to my physical address since they don't do P.O. Boxes. Anyone know an answer?

What about people ordering from a carrier for the first time? I plan on switching from Sprint to AT&T and obviously AT&T doesn't yet have an address on file for me.

If you're opening a new account, you may have to order from an AT&T store or their website.

Really? The Apple site is for upgrades alone? If somebody who'd never had a cell phone before wanted to order one from the presale, they just... couldn't?

Here is what I did today, upon advice by others:

-Added an alternate billing address for my AMEX for work. They said it is common and I would not receive any mail here.

-Thus, if I order from Apple, I use that address for shipping/billing.

-Called VZW and had them change my billing address to work. She said as long as I'm paperless, they won't send anything. I'm guessing they're used to the question, because she said "change it, wait until the end of next week, and change it back."

Haven't decided whether I'll do Apple or VZW. Guess we'll see if it works out alright early tomorrow.

I called Apple and they told me that the billing address must match up for both the credit card and the carrier. So I called Bank of America and they switched my billing address and it was very easy to change on ATT's site.

for my iphone 4 i placed the order on apple.com and ship to my company address and it worked out. i received the phone a day before the launched day.

Im a college student who live 4 hours away from home. In order to get it shipped to my house at college I just went on ATTs website, changed the billing address, then preordered it with apple (I had a giftcard). Everything worked out fine, and its being shipped to me not my dad!

EDIT: I guess now well just wait and see if my dad finds out I changed the billing address haha. Im sure hes going to read about this somewhere and call me to give me **** for not being able to preorder the 4S (ive been waiting for about 6 months now), but I can and did.

I dont think the CREDIT CARD address has to match the ship-to address that your carrier has listed.

I asked an Apple rep and he said it does not have to match, on top of the fact that Apple.com already hit my credit card with a hold for the full amount.

Chillax!

For Those of You Who Have Pre-Ordered: Which Billing Address Do They Use?

If I order from Apple, do they use my credit card billing address or my AT&T billing address?

Is it different if I order through AT&T?

My dilemma is that my AT&T wireless account is combined with my home phone line, so I don't think I can change the billing address for that account away from being my home.

If either or both use the CC billing address, I know I can change that online so that they will ship to my office.

TIA

So I, too, was running into this similar error. My billing address is different than my shipping address, as I am at school right now. So likewise, I was like wtf.

Decided to just tap into AT&T and change the billing address to my current shipping address.

However, Apple wasn't showing the update, so I tried just ordering through AT&T, and it went through, showing my new shipping address!

So I guess I'll just cancel my Apple reservation or let it run out (expires tomorrow at 5PM).

Cheers,

I was freaking out about this too. If I left it as is the phone would be shipped to my brothers condo, so when I spoke to an Apple person, he told me to change the billing address from my brothers AT&T account to the one I wanted, and once I received the phone to change the address back to what it was. And that's what I did, and it worked! :D
