Apple has been saying the Mac and the iPad won’t merge and yet iOS and MacOS look even more similar every WWDC and Big Sur is very touch friendly and now they run the same processors. John Sculley said the Macintosh would not replace the Apple II and it was very important to the Apple brand. Why can’t I buy a new Apple II in 2021? In January 2002 Steve Jobs took the stage and said the CRT was officially dead with the release of the iMac G4. In April of 2002 Apple released the eMac G4.. with a CRT. I’m not saying the Mac and iPad will merge, you’re probably right, I’m just saying Apple doesn’t always tell the truth when it comes to product release plans.
There will always be the people who run the shows and the people who attend the shows.

People who run the show will try everything they can to create the illusion that you are running the shows. But no. They are, and they always will be.

iPadOS and macOS do not look alike, at all. iPadOS is still very much iOS but optimized for bigger displays. macOS is also not touch-friendly—it still requires a high level of precision which can only be achieved by a mouse or a trackpad. The fact that they run on the same processors is not necessarily an indication that they will eventually merge, Apple has already explained that the main goal was to establish a common architecture, allowing for tighter control that is required in order for them to make better products.

The idea of a device that runs both iPadOS and macOS is unrealistic. Having two distinctly different operating systems implies that some sort of switching will have to take place, similar to tablet mode in Windows. Craig Federighi has explained in an AppStories episode that this is exactly the thing they want to avoid.

Sorry, but I am calling BS here... they state that volume chip shipments will start in Q2 2021...

That would mean we are months away from release, I highly doubt that at this point.

I still think we will get a press release next week or that event invites will go out next Tuesday with the event on 30th...

Who knows maybe apple have seen a negative effect on momentum of these online events by announcing them a whole week in advance, we could see an invite as late as Friday.

MacOS and iOS don’t look alike at all? Do you have vision issues? The lines between MacOS and iPad OS are thinner every year.

I haven’t pulled the trigger on a M1 Mac because I want to see what the new iPad Pro has to offer. I truly believe the iPad Pro is the future of the Mac. It can technically run both iOS and Mac software with touch and pencil support, which I think it eventually will.
The MacBook and regular iPads can stay as they are to please those that are devoted to those form factors, but Apple should run with the iPad Pro and give it all the capabilities to make it the perfect mobile computer, which I think it almost is.

Microsoft has tried to pretend the tablet down with a FULL OS can serve people's work needs for years now, and the Surface tablet line is nowhere near making laptops obsolete in any way, and still has a lot of the impulse buy/toy factor, and I've owned several. The one useful model is the Surface Go, because it combines a somewhat slow, but small carrying burden that people can use to keep up with normal business while on the go. It has terrible touch interface and no real apps for it, so it will soldier on without the advantages of the iPad media consumption segment.

However, form factor is not usability or productivity. It is, at this point, gee-whiz and a 'sports car' for people who don't need to do even moderate hauling.

Apple has started shilling that same tablet-as-laptop dream as MS for YEARS as a MARKETING lure for a mature, replacement-not-huge-growth segment.

It is FAR MORE USEFUL for a Mac to be offered in the SurfaceBook format, with touch screen tech, but Apple will never do that because it would poach $$$$ from iPad and Mac lines.

THAT is why I consider even my first generation SurfaceBook the future, instead of a marketing ploy iPad-as-laptop 'future' daydream.

Of course you don't need this product. You have 2018 model. You would be silly to buy it.
This update is not for those who have 2020 or 2018 model but for those that don't have any or are jumping from old devices. (air 2 in my case)
Your device will be fine for at another revision before you actually should start thinking about an upgrade. :)
So yeah, don't worry. You are good

The more I think about it, the more I don't think I need this product. 2018 iPad Pro 12.9" still works flawlessly, and the screen is great.

Count me in on the announce by press release only. Can't see this being an event but what do I know.

I'm waiting for a iPad mini 6 and a new Apple TV, but why am I starting to think that Apple TV hardware is going the way of the full size HomePod? Hope I'm wrong.

And in April will say it will be realeased in May and so on, until it will be true..
This Digitimes is a joke

What exactly could be announced at the March 23rd event then? Also, we're less than a week away from the supposed event.

supposedly airtags, airpods, the ipad pros, apple tv
but if the announcement is not done in the next 3 hours , there will not be an event on 23rd

Personally I think this is what has happened:

originally the plan was to have an event on March 23rd as planned which would see the launch of the iPad Pro, AirPods 3 and AirTags.

However, as recently reported AirPods 3 have been delayed until later in the year, AirTags (apple is in no rush to release) have likely also been delayed due to the fact that most peeps are still in lockdown, that just leaves the iPad Pro... now is worth an ‘EVENT’ for just the iPad Pro... I don’t think so, as the main changes are:

A14X - Basically an iOS version of the M1 chip, already been talked about in great detail last year.

5G - Already been talked about last in GREEEEAT detail last year.

miniLED - This is pretty much the main seller of the new Pro’s BUT it’s only coming to one size (based on rumours).

These 3 main improvements to the iPad Pro could easily be explained in a simple 15 minute video.

HOWEVER... we haven’t had any new SKU’s reported... soooo I am not sure if a press release is on the cards, or whether it is in fact delayed til April.

So much for Apple leaks - no one really knows when/how this thing is going to go down. As much as we would all like to believe that the new pro slipping to April means something really great is coming we are going to be disappointed I fear. This is going to be A14X/Z, 5G, Mini-LED for improvements. Maybe we'll get 8GB RAM, maybe not but the new iPad Pro isn't going to change the "can it replace a laptop" equilibrium at all. I really want something shiny and new to replace my 2018 IPP but it's going to hard to justify the cost given the very incremental hardware improvement.

Unless you are doing video editing and playing high end 3D games it makes no sense to get iPad pro.

The iPad Air and basic iPad is well okay for basic stuff.
I use the iPad for illustration - and as RAM partially determines the number of layers available in Procreate, Pro is a must.

I am looking to upgrade this March/ April from a 2017 10.5

Well it strange you got third party bringing out cases. It could be they just reading the rumors here and on other web sites.

But with out Apple registering any product it is very unlikely a iPad is coming out this month or next month.
"Registering" the product doesn't mean anything.

And Target is not carrying production cases from a reputable brand that is referencing an unreleased iPad just based on rumors.

Apple has been saying the Mac and the iPad won’t merge and yet iOS and MacOS look even more similar every WWDC and Big Sur is very touch friendly and now they run the same processors.

Lol a couple of similar looking icons does not make the OS "touch friendly".

Well, they can still announce it on the 23rd, and say it's shipping in April right? Unless they want people to keep buying current iPad's as long as possible....

This Digitimes is a joke
Digitimes and Mac Okatara are very much alike. Fake sites they are

it’s appalling for digitimes to keep on posting (spamming rather) this about the iPad and it being revealed on March and now this news. They are a joke
