This would be a terrible idea. So many ear phones included with the phones just lie around and are never used. I have drawers full, and every once in a while, pull one out for something, could be years after I received them. AirPods wouldn't even live that long and they'd be dead by the time anyone needed them.

Besides, the AirPods are disposable enough as they are, we don't need extra batteries being manufactured and never being used. Adding a discount for anyone buying AirPods at the same time as a phone or iPad makes more sense. Then the customer can get the AirPods they want, basic or pro, and only if they're going to use them.

Apple has included basic, wired EarPods with a Lightning connector in the box with iPhones for several years. Those earphones likely cost Apple very little to manufacture

Let's be honest... AirPods probably don't cost Apple a lot to manufacturer, either. ;)

The only way they'd do this is (as mentioned above) as a build-to-order option where the price adjusts accordingly. Though it would be nice, given how many people are willing to pay over-and-above for these, there's little logic in giving them away.

Which raises another question: Does DigiTimes even think about their predictions? Like, when they review supply chains and come up with an idea, do they take a step back and ask themselves if it even makes sense?

As others have said the most likely way it would happen would be to introduce some sort of bundles. Buy a maxed out iPhone 5G, latest Apple Watch cellular version, your choice of AirPods or APP. Add $100 for the APP. Perhaps at some point they can solve the issue of AirPods replacements buy using such bundles. If you are on the IUP you can opt in for AirPod replacements as an option.

However they go I am sure Cook will know how to do this. He is an expert at draining blood with out harming the host too much. It would be interesting to know with the APP production being doubled how the other AirPods are faring in sales.

Lets say they (Digititimes) doesn’t think about their predictions, do they really need to? They still get attention from MacRumors plugging them as a potential source that the AirPods _could_ be paired with the iPhone. Even if DigiTimes is wrong more than they are right, perhaps this is their end goal, is to just draw attention to their site.

Plus, they also seem to believe other competitors (Samsung/Xiaomi) will include their own wireless Bluetooth options in the box, it’s not just Apple they’re referring to in the article.

They won’t but maybe they should because people will either lose or break them and then purchase them again because they got used to them.

I have a feeling many people don’t have AirPods simply because they haven‘t tried them. That said, I did try them and still prefer over ear headphones 90% of the time.

Lol. Hysterical. Apple would never pass on The cash AirPods bring in. That goes against their business plan. Nickel and dime for the win

"These AirPods are huge sellers for us and incredibly popular, lets bundle them in so that customers don't have to buy them separately simply because we love our customers so much and our wealth is almost beyond understanding"

- said no-one at Apple ever.

This just doesn’t seem true. DigiTimes has a rocky track record when it comes to rumors. Just days before AirPower was cancelled, they said that AirPower would be launching imminently. It would be nice if Apple included AirPods with their iPhones, but it just doesn’t seem logical.

AirPod sales are through the roof. No way Apple is going to include them with an iPhone.

Is it because they need to justify a $1300 price tag?

They don't need to add AirPods to justify the price. iPhone is Awesome, Practically Magic, and Courageous. With those features it would justify itself at double the current price.
