DirecTV's 'NFL Sunday Ticket' Offered as Standalone Subscription, Available on Macs/iOS Devices [Updated]

My wife, the biggest NFL fan in the family, is happy to watch the Red Zone channel - no commercials, only impact plays. You can keep Sunday Ticket.

Only if you wanted to replicate what you get with cable. Personally, I watch maybe 30-40 channels total (and that includes the multiple versions of the same pay channels).

If we could choose the channels we actually wanted I suspect that even at $2-3 per channel, I'd come out way ahead of the insane pricing we are stuck with currently.
Except the good channels subsidize the bad ones. If they broke things down on a per channel basis you may be looking at more like 10-15 dollars per channel, not 2-3.

Let the market pick which stations stay around. The current model is just used to scam us by giving more channels which gives more ad revenue (which are bought regardless of viewership) and no real options for the consumer.
Prices would probably rise by your model, not fall. Like laws of thermodynamics, there is a certain amount of financial flow that is needed to keep the cable and network industry afloat. Take away something here, you'll pay more there. Besides, be careful what you ask for. Based on what the market likes, you may find yourself buried in reality shows and Fox News. Not bad, if that is your thing. Many others would prefer to gouge their eyes out.

Uhm. What a load of tut. Passbook has plentiful use, Apple TV is still the best you can buy in an Apple Store in my opinion.

Also, this isn’t a feature of an Apple product, this is an American content provider providing content to Americans. You may as well be angry that your nearest 7-11 isn’t within walking distance or that you aren’t allowed to vote in the New Hampshire primary.

I think Apple TV is the ONLY choice you have in an Apple store, I have not seen them selling alternatives. So I will not even bother with the rest of your weird reply. But have fun buying a Chromecast from your local Apple Store or 7-11 (???)

AT&T deal off ??

Does this kill the AT&T/DirecTV deal ??

It was supposed to be contingent upon exclusivity of Sunday Ticket.

They might *want* to charge that much for each channel, but once the dust settles many of these channels will end up in $2-3 range or free, as there will still be tons of commercials that need eyeballs to be worth anything. It is strange to think each of these channels will end up costing more than HBO.

As usual, this is about half the story and is instead spun to look like some sort of Apple exclusive. It isn't just for iOS and Mac. This program has been around for a couple of years. You cannot be able to get Directv in order to be eligible.

I don't know if I can pay 199 just to only watch my team. I would easily fork over 99 to just watch my team. If this is available on Apple TV though I might have to contemplate.

So $300 for a sports package isn't a lot of money? That's a months car payment .. sheesh.

Expensive is relative.

As others have stated, attending games is up there too. If your team is out of town so you can't otherwise watch the games, then it changes the value proposition.

I'll spend thousands per year attending hockey games, but really have no interest in going to football games. On TV however, I love it. Everyone's got their thing I guess..

blacked out games

I believe in 2013 there was only two games that were "blacked out" in local areas its nothing like it use to be

A bit pricy, but may go for this. (don't follow the local teams (Santa Clara 49ers and Oakland Raiders), so catching the Packers games is hard for me)

The $30 NFL version (at least last year) only played the games on computers after all games that day were done. (so after Sunday night football).

Which means you had to avoid hearing the score for quite a while for that to be any good for me.

Of course the NFL network free replays (if you have NFL network) screw you over since they put the day's scores for all games ON SCREEN as they are replaying the day's games. First time I tried using that replay, I had to cover the stupid tickers to avoid being spoiled. Never bothered watching the replays on NFL network after that. :/

I think a lot of people say "blacked out" because they force you to watch the local affiliate if the game is on one of your local channels. I missed recording a few Sunday Ticket games due to this.

I'd rather pay $200 than deal with the crappy quality and overall annoyingness of dealing with sites like firstrowsports.

Agreed. Those sites are like a last resort which I've unfortunately had to use since moving out of Boston.

Lagging, sometimes poor quality, and constant crashing of links makes it not very enjoyable to watch the Jets (which is not very enjoyable to begin with :D).

Ha ha ha, outstanding. Well done. This year should be better, no?

Don't get too excited. I have some insider information on this. This isn't available to everyone. It is only available in 6 major cities:
NY
SF
Philly
Seattle
Miami
Atlanta

10 major universities

and Multi Dwelling Units (Apartment buildings)

Outside of college students you need to be in a market that can't get DIRECTV and need to prove it by your zip code. Students will be verified via the registrar's office and an EDU email address won't be enough.

No! Dammit, seriously? That would be a HUGE mistake. While I think $200 is a little high, I'd still pay it.

the only time that happens is when your local game is on espn they will always brodcast it on one of the local ch at least thats what they do in MA

I had the NFL ticket stream last year when I bought the Madden game. I mirrored my laptop to my tv and got to watch any game except some blackouts.

Downfall: It would freeze a lot and the quality was choppy at times. Then other times the HD quality was on point. I would say it was bad more than it was good esp towards the end of season.

Not sure what I'm gonna do this year because I'm a Seahawks fan living in NY..... gotta be able to watch their games.

The content owners have been trying to have their cake and eat it too... maintaining enough eyeballs to generate meaningful ad revenue AND generating ever-increasing per subscriber revenue from Cable and Satellite providers.

Expecting the majority of current viewers to maintain a half dozen or more monthly payments to individual networks month after month is a big ask... of course so is footing the bill for Netflix-ish levels of storage and streaming infrastructure in a pure Internet delivery model.

I'm not in any of those markets/segments and the website said I could get it so I'm not sure if you're missing markets or just don't have the full story.

Apple stores also sell iMacs, MacBooks, Mac Minis, the Mac Pro, iPhones, iPods, iPads, a variety of headphones and accessories for both macs and iOS devices as well as networking solutions in the form of the Airport range. They also sell membership plans for the one to one tuition scheme and vouchers for the iTunes Store. However, I prefer the Apple TV over all of these options.

My reply is pointing out that you are having a strop over an Americocentric tech website reporting an American story about an online alternative to a cable subscription. That's a bit like having a wobbler because their coverage of Keven Pieterson's 39 from 28 balls against Somerset today was particularly non-existent.

You also made claims that Apple were being unfairly US-focused by doing this. However, as the story in question is about a change in policy by the American satellite television company DirecTV, which may be of benefit to NFL fans who are also users of Apple devices, it seems a little bit odd to be angry at Apple for “allowing” this. MacRumours has a scope of coverage, this story is well within that. Your tantrum that you can't use passbook or Apple TV is utterly irrelevant, not to mention false.

In the USA, which remains Apples primary market - just because we speak the same language as them, we are not a part of the same market - NFL is by far the most watched professional sport, the final game of the season consistently breaks it's own record for the most watched TV event. To this end it is not unreasonable to say that for the majority of viewers of this story, the option to watch out-of-market games (those which are not aired locally due to a smaller audience) is a tempting prospect.

For you it may not be. However, as you are not the sole browser of this website, it does not exist to only publish stories personally relevant to you. That is what your twitter is for.

For what it's worth, I live in a multi-dwelling condo in Portland, OR and Direct TV says I'm eligible.

This will be insanely popular and will generate revenue that will easily offset any cannibalization of full-on DIRECTV dish & package sales. I don't completely understand the limited rollout.

Can I use Apple TV to watch NFLSUNDAYTICKET.TV?

No, Apple TV is not a supported device for the 2014 season.

Although not as convenient, just use your AppleTV as an Airplay receiver and watch on the bigscreen from your iPhone or iPad.

I got Sunday Ticket online last year with the Madden deal, and I did not enjoy the experience. The feed was a solid minute behind real time, but the app had a score ticker on it that was real time, so basically every score was spoiled. And one Sunday it didn't work at all.

See: http://news.yahoo.com/directv-nfl-sunday-ticket-online-outage--170700007.html
When you compare DireTV's feed to that of the NFl...you'll realize DTV's is garbage. Nothing good about it. Don't understand why in the last 5 years they can't make it a solid feed without all the jumping, freezing and delays. Pffft. I usually get it for free along with Sunday Ticket Max so I don't complain. I just let a buddy log on since he doesn't have DTV. Even @ FREE he complains about the lousy feed. LOL

lol... I know NFL football gets a lot of ridicule for this but, that graphic... wow. Even my "Fantasy Zone" don't involve a pile of men in spandex crawling all over each other, and I say that as a 100% gay man.

Their uneasy fascination with beefcake is hilarious.
