Cord cutters rejoice! Very smart move on DirecTV's part. I think they'll make a substantial sum on these new subscriptions.

Not a game changer until they fix the product

I got Sunday Ticket online last year with the Madden deal, and I did not enjoy the experience. The feed was a solid minute behind real time, but the app had a score ticker on it that was real time, so basically every score was spoiled. And one Sunday it didn't work at all.

That pricing is insane.

As in "insanely low"? I think you've underestimated the demand for NFL Football in the U.S. Two tickets to an NFL game can easily run $200+. Being able to watch the entire season on a computer, phone, or tablet for $200 is a steal for people who are NFL fanatics.

This is the start of something REALLY big......

Ala Carte Tv in the making!!

:apple:

A la carte is not happening. Besides, if you really looked into what true a la carte system would give you, it would likely be less options at a higher cost.

The cable system is far from perfect and needs to be addressed, but the a la carte argument needs to be put to rest.

100% this. I really think those asking for a-la-carte have no idea how this would really play out. I've never had anyone give me a viable financial reason for the cable companies to even consider it. We'd all end up paying more for less content.

On topic. Sunday Ticket with no DTV, I can dig it.

I can't believe they charge different amounts to watch the same thing on different types of devices.

What the heck makes it harder for them to deliver the stream to a console than to a tablet? It's the same stream!

Do this for the World Cup and Euro Cup, please. Except whatever they do, it probably won't be worth it unless they perceive a serious risk of people dropping cable.

----------

200 bucks! mmm tenyardtorrents will have to do for now :p

If only you could torrent live games.

We win.

Finally, big networks will learn how BIG the cord-cutter market is. WE WIN. :apple:

----------

I wonder if you'll be able to airplay? Doubt it.

Post was just updated -- an FAQ on the DirecTV site indicates this is going to be limited by area. If you're in an apartment or are a college student, you'll probably be eligible, but for people in a residence that can get DirecTV service, the standalone subscription isn't available.

Amazing, yet another feature that hardly anyone cares about outside the USA.
I am a fanboy, but I can see how they struggle. Apple have apparently lost the plot when it comes to the rest of the world.
Here in the UK I have given up on Passbook, iTunes Radio and Apple TV, they either don't exist or are the dullest thing in the country.

Uhm. What a load of tut. Passbook has plentiful use, Apple TV is still the best you can buy in an Apple Store in my opinion.

Also, this isn’t a feature of an Apple product, this is an American content provider providing content to Americans. You may as well be angry that your nearest 7-11 isn’t within walking distance or that you aren’t allowed to vote in the New Hampshire primary.

1/10th of a Game Changer

Don't get too excited. I have some insider information on this. This isn't available to everyone. It is only available in 6 major cities:
NY
SF
Philly
Seattle
Miami
Atlanta

10 major universities

and Multi Dwelling Units (Apartment buildings)

Outside of college students you need to be in a market that can't get DIRECTV and need to prove it by your zip code. Students will be verified via the registrar's office and an EDU email address won't be enough.

^^^ If this is true (and I'm sure it is knowing how DirecTV is), this is the biggest non-announcement in the history of time. (Possible hyperbole.)

But seriously, they are gonna dink and dunk (to borrow an NFL commentator term) their way through this whole process of streaming all NFL games to users located in the US (at least in terms of IP address resolution.) It starts with these very selective markets, dorms, and apartments. It will then move to the backwoods locations. Then it will be for users everywhere (outside of those ol' 1950s black-out areas) who have a fast enough connection thru a select ISP. Then, I will pass away, and only after that point will folks who live in my old house be able to buy this subscription and be able to watch a different game when the Mighty Packers are playing at Lambeau.

AM I the only person whose Safari browser is saying it cannot find the server at the end of the link to determine the eligibility? I live outside of Seattle--one of the possible locales for this offer.

Updated (10 minutes later): found another link in this thread and found out I am not in an eligible area. Back to watching the stream online from Europe with the hilarious in studio personalities, I guess.

Is that not a lot of money for a sports subscription?

Still seems too expensive
Single game tickets for family of five: $500
Concessions for five (no alcohol): $150
Parking: $20

Total: $670

How does $200 for every game sound in comparison?

----------

NFL Sunday Ticket, a popular sports package provided by DirecTV, will be offered as a standalone subscription for the first time in 2014, letting users who do not subscribe to DirecTV service access NFL Sunday Ticket games on their Macs and iOS devices.
Can we change this in the article, please? This is NOT the first time this exact deal has been offered, as many have stated in the thread already.

Only if you wanted to replicate what you get with cable. Personally, I watch maybe 30-40 channels total (and that includes the multiple versions of the same pay channels).

If we could choose the channels we actually wanted I suspect that even at $2-3 per channel, I'd come out way ahead of the insane pricing we are stuck with currently.

The big 5 are free (regardless of what the Supreme Ct says). The only worthy television after that may be USA, AMC, the pay channels (HBO mainly), a couple shows on TNT, 1 show on History Channel, Disney Channel for my daughter. After that I can't really think of any that we would not get.

Right now we are inundated with garbage television but we likely only flip through all those channels because they are there, not because its something we actually watch.

I'd love for them to get better internet and a la carte stations. Let the market pick which stations stay around. The current model is just used to scam us by giving more channels which gives more ad revenue (which are bought regardless of viewership) and no real options for the consumer.

This is very close to the same program that they have had for the past few years. The main difference is the university program. I tested with a address in the Atlanta market that is a single family home and it reported not eligible. So it's for people in apartments and condos and college dorm rooms. Nothing that new here.
