Have we really gotten to the point where one cannot disagree with another without that being perceived as an emotional/inflammatory response?
Yes, we have gotten to that point. It is the result of students, from kindergarten to college graduates, being taught that any ideas with which they disagree should not be permitted in the realm of public discourse. Students today are not taught how to consider, debate and respect points of view with which they disagree. So, like infants, the only response they have is an emotional one.

To everyone: CAN WE PLEASE REFER TO THE REACTION PROPERLY, IT IS "DISAGREE" NOT "DISLIKE".

Yes, it was very specifically named "disagree".

I think all users should have a daily "budget" of post reactions they are allowed to use.

It would encourage a more judicious usage of likes/dislikes/etc and actually make them all mean more if you only had so many to give out.

There is a budget of "Disagree"s. So you can't spam the disagree button.

Great point.
It would be nice if MR allowed a way to simply not see any part of the like/dislike system if you’d prefer.

@arn - what say you?

Um... I suppose we could let you block it? I'm not sure that solves much.

If the MR website were sorting and crafting a view of a thread that is trying to surface “interesting posts” but in a way where none of us knew the like or dislike count, I would feel differently.

Just a little background on why there is a Disagree button.

The Likes are used in news story comments. See: https://www.macrumors.com/how-to/iphone-13-pro-macro-photography/

The most liked posts end up near the top and end up featured on the article page itself. Generally, this works pretty well. Not perfect, but it serves its purpose, which is to highlight interesting content from the forums.

Before we had the "Disagree" button, controversial posts could end up rising to the top. If you can imagine, a polarizing post would attract a lot of "Like"s despite half the people not liking it at all. Those comments would then be featured under the news article and gave an unbalanced view of the comments.

Those same comments might attract a similar number of Likes and Disagrees, in which case the ranking of the comment will fall closer to 0, while a more universally "Like"d comment floats to the top.

I'm not sure if that explanation helps. But that's also why it's limited to the News stories, since it serves some purpose there.

Just a nit-picky thing, imo. If there is a disagree reaction then the "like" should be agree. Should be similiar nuances between like/agree and dislike/disagree. For me, I would like to see disagree available on the other forums, and additionally raise the daily budget of disagree a tad.

I would advise MR to change the icon from "thumbs down" to something else to reflect "disagree." "Thumbs down" should have the opposite meaning to "thumbs up" (so it would be "like" and "dislike") or else you risk confusion. There are many interesting icons to pick.

It will just become Reddit and people brigade on opposing opinions without justification or articulation. “Just downvote him/her and leave” is a common saying.

People who tend to leave a simple downvote are the type of people who would otherwise leave a one word or short insult, and those are typically moderated, now they control which opinions get surfaced. So downvoting creates a double negative in my mind.

If you disagree, articulate.

The one I can't figure out is the "laughing" reaction..

That is either laughing with you or laughing at you -- very different reactions.

Personally, while I don't think it 'solves' anything in particular, it would make the use of the forums more pleasant if for one reason: I get tired of getting notifications for reactions that have no follow-up whatsoever when I am expecting/hoping for a response to a post I made. I only want to know when something I can actually act on is done. I'm not sure if there's already a way to turn notifications for reactions off?

It would be kind of nice if you could turn off reaction notifications that aren't simple "likes".

The other ones have too many potential meanings and, to your point, nobody seems to follow up with actual content...just drive by "disliking/thumbs down" or "laughing" (which can be positive or negative - who knows!?)

It's all a wash to me. Someone will laugh at me repeatedly but I will never know why, same with disagree. Why do they disagree with me? I ponder it, and it's a waste of time to even do that. I don't want to be left guessing. On that other forum, someone who agreed with my actual posts was disliking them anyway because they had been mass dislikes. Best part is, the thread was just about fun suggestions and all I was doing was making my own, but apparently people did not agree... None of them explained why.

At the very least though, I do agree that Like should be changed to Agree, I believe this is actually the default language Xenforo uses for this reaction.

Perfectly said..
It's like -- "say something!" -- this is a discussion forum, not just a place to click on emoji's all over..

There is. It affects all reactions, though. You can't pick which ones to receive notifications for. It's all or nothing.

First, go here:

This should be the Preferences page in your account.

Next, scroll down to the section with this heading (it won't be in bold, I'm just bolding it for emphasis):
Receive a notification when someone…

Below that heading there will be a bunch of labeled settings, each with two checkboxes to its right. One checkbox will be for Alert, the other will be for Push.

Scroll down to the setting with this label:
Reacts to your message:

Then uncheck the Alert checkbox. If this is unchecked, then the Push checkbox state shouldn't matter.

You can uncheck any other settings you don't want to receive any notices for.

Finally, scroll all the way to the bottom and click the Save button.

Totally agree and their explanation for why it's only on news stories has never made sense to me.

I see, thanks. It would be nice down the road to perhaps be able to disable only certain types, but this is better for sure.

One thing that is nice is that you don't get notifications of "reactions" from folks you've blocked.
That's a plus also.

This is good to know also, I've only blocked a few people but the ones I did tended to be rather nasty in ways that skirted by moderation.

Some of them spam the reactions, as they know you'll see that even if they are blocked.
It's an unfortunate "hole" in the blocking feature/function on the site.

If you dislike, you should comment with an explanation rather than use a juvenile icon. IMHO.
And the ironic part is, someone can just disagree with another member simply asking a question. The disagreeing member did that without offering any points of valuable discussion.
That is bloody ridiculous. Feels like back in elementary school sometimes.
