Apple has released two iterations of their iPhones (12/13) during a worldwide pandemic where wearing masks have become the norm and their FaceID system is absolutely useless.

In the case of the iPhone 12, perhaps it was too late to implement TouchID on the power button but the lack of it on the iPhone 13 when they've had a ton of time to prepare for it is just disappointing. They seem to have no problem including it with some of their products like the new iPad mini 6, so why not the iPhone when it could benefit from TouchID the most? The countless amount of people I've seen taking off their masks, looking frustrated and having a poor experience from FaceID, is just sad and laughable.

TouchID and FaceID on an iPhone would be the ultimate convenience. Why not have the best of both worlds?

Not when apple seems to pride itself on making your life easier in every way through their iDevices.

Apple ditched TouchID with the iPhone X.

At least for the flagship model. What made you think they would include it on the next flagship model? Just because they have it on other models (such as the SE) it doesn't automatically follow that they are switching back to it. If anything they are working on improving FaceID.

Also, just because you feel it's a good idea it doesn't mean Apple shares your feelings. It's convenient for you, but you aren't running Apple and do not have their perspective about it.

Analysis: True.

If Face ID had come long before Touch ID, we would all be hailing Touch ID as a major advancement superior to the old tech in every practical way. It's been several years since I had a Touch ID phone, and I still miss it every single day. My wife hasn't upgraded in years because she refuses to give up the Touch ID.

Sometimes Apple just goes backwards in important useability features. I'm having trouble getting used to the uncomfortably sharp edges on my new 13 Pro and the fact that its extra thickness makes it more difficult and less pleasant to hold in my hand than the 11 I upgraded from.

Ive been using the iPhone X, then the 11 Pro Max for the past 2 years.
I sold the 11 Pro Max a week or two before the 13 Pro and used an iPhone 7Plus for the week instead.

I have to say, I missed FaceID.

Having to manually touch the button to authenticate on websites or apps, even just waking the phone, I found quite inconvenient. I'm glad to have FaceID back again now with my new handset.

I know TouchID wouldn't replace FaceID, everyone wants both authentication methods together, but now that wearing face masks has been relaxed, I personally find no need for TouchID, and I don't miss it at all.

Having the tech ink power buttons on iPads made us hope that it would be coming as an additional option which would be nice for those who need the phone while having a mask on all the time. At least there was some progress for watch wearers.

I don’t think they would have been able to change course as quickly as needed. The designs (both internal and external) of these phones are locked down many months in advance.

Agreed. I’m coming from a 7+ and I thought that I’d miss the touch ID but I don’t. The face ID is much more convenient

Masks won’t be around forever so why do you think Apple would change their iPhone just for masks?

Because they are including them in iPads again? Because not everyone has watches so their "making it work with masks" doesn't make it work.
Apple does what is convenient and makes business sense for them. They do not follow what everyone else believes or thinks would make sense to them personally. They've stated that TouchID is dead (at least in the flagship device) and are working to improve it with masks. Based on that I am not surprised.

Where has Apple said TouchID is dead? We even have rumors that they will introduce it in the iPhone 14. If Apple truly said it is dead, nobody would every release a rumor that they are adding it back in a future phone.

Bringing back Touch ID is not something they can do with a snap of Tim Cook's fingers. That's some serious re-engineering of the design, not something Apple (or anybody else) would do without a lot of demand. Even with the pandemic its not something for which the majority of the user base is clamoring.

Rumors suggest it might come back on the iPhone 14 in a new under-screen form.

Absolutely! At this point, the lack of Touch ID, just says how cocky they are and boasting their ability to get away with providing necessary features because People are gonna buy it anyway...what other option do they have and they are probably right. Because otherwise it would've shown in the sales figures which never show any signs of slowig down *smh*
