Pay and NFC Phone payment support at Panera totally sucks. The one Panera where I regularly go has only one register with Pay, and that one is somewhere in the corner and usually not staffed. In the beginning when I asked for Pay they started explaining to me that it it impossible to pay with a phone and that I need either cash or a credit card. They even went the extra mile and showed me where the credit card slot is and showed how they have to slide it through and that they can't do that with a phone (they treated me like an idiot). In the many many times I go there, I was only able to pay twice with Pay - and both times the cashier stared at disbelieve at me, called over the colleagues to ask for advice and than they tried talking me into that I have now to show also my credit card and that they still need to swipe it. This is especially disappointing since Panera is a launch partner.

Apple really needs to educate their launch partners and new partners (and those partners need to educate their cashiers). Also it is not acceptable to be a launch parter and have that device turned off in the corner.

Yeah it's pretty bad considering Panera was hyped as one of the launch partners. I think Eddy Cue even did a TV segment at a Panera to demonstrate it. If you're a launch partner EVERY register should be equipt to accept Pay. Perhaps we're just finding out that Eddy Cue isn't this master deal maker/negotiator he's been made out to be.

I've been waiting for this. My primary card is my discover card. Not being a part of Apple pay has been the only thing preventing me from using Apple pay. I have my visa in there, but I try not to use it because I have a good rate on my discover, and want to keep my debt consolidated on one card. This is exciting!

While I would agree, it almost seems like Apple has forgotten about Siri. Google Now is leaps and bounds ahead of Siri in many ways at the current time.

The Siri website they rolled out with iOS 8.3 would say otherwise, and if you're worried that's just for show here's a headline:

http://www.idownloadblog.com/2014/07/01/apple-in-house-siri-speech-team/

What concerns me is they didn't have in-house voice recognition people from the start!

Anyway, with each update they add languages, if nothing else. Plus: Cortana, Google Now and Siri are three things that are often compared: I doubt Apple have forgotten it :)

There was an article a week or two ago related to a flaw in the authorization process that has lead to increase fraud with Apple Pay. I think they pointed to it being a bank issue. Has this been addressed in any way? When Discover finally goes live, will they have a different verification process?

I am just curious as to what happen to the fraud issue. Anyone out there have any insight on this?

Thank you.

Nice to see them adding more cards. Last week they added a bunch of Credit Unions, including mine.

The problem I'm finding is that there are just too many places that don't support it (or NFC payments) yet. My preferred grocery store (Frys Food) doesn't although my second (Bashas) does. Target, Walmart, Sams Club, Costco all do not. Even though Chevron announced support, the one by me does not have NFC at the pump yet. My other preferred gas station (QuikTrip) doesn't either. I haven't been to a single dine in restaurant that has advertised it.

Even one place that does (the Home Depot by me), I don't always use it because I had my card linked so it would automatically send me a digital receipt of my purchases and that feature doesn't work with Apple Pay.

I doubt Apple have forgotten it :)

And it's so important for Apple Watch, so it's going to see continued improvement.

It's definitely improving IMO. For accuracy it's pretty much flawless for me (Northern English accent). But they can certainly keep working to expand its functionality, which I'm sure they will.

Good to see the addition of Discover in the States, still crossing the old fingers for a UK launch later this year.

I doubt it will be addressed by Apple, as it isn't Apple's issue. The verification process for each bank is decided by the bank itself - not by Apple. The problem is with banks that don't provide real or significant two-factor authentication and rely on old, stand by verification methods such as Mother's maiden name, zip code, etc... stuff that used to be reasonably secure to identify that a remote person is the cardholder - but that is now very easy to find out about almost anyone via the internet - such that if just an account number, name and address is found out, the bad guys who stole the account numbers are able to enroll the card in Apple Pay from those banks that have weak authentication.

In the EMVCo specification (which Apple Pay is just one implementation of) it is the bank's responsibility to verify and enroll the cards.

Arghhhhh !! What a crock of POO !!!

One of the best selling points of the iPhone 6 in the UK was Apple Pay finally!

Yet we are now end of April and we still don't have this feature...oh and don't even get me started about Apple Radio !!!!!

False advertising Apple :( :(

When the 4S came out I remember people using Siri to ask it dumb questions and see what kind of smart-aleck or cutesy response they'd get. Unfortunately Apple doesn't help matters as they continue to focus on the witty side of Siri. That would be fine if we were seeing huge improvements in other ways buy we're not really which is a shame.

In my opinion, the voice recognition has improved, it understands me 100x better than it did originally (with my accent) and has been able to answer every question I asked with no issues. I don't tend to focus on the witty side but a lot of minor improvements here and there are contributing to a better user experience.

Kind of bummed that it's taking this long. Discover has become my go to card because their rewards are great for the products/services I buy. I even contemplated about getting rid of my AMEX since Discover has similar warranty/return programs.

I agree. Can't believe it will have taken them almost a year to get it done. Frankly, I think it's stupid to wait that long. I have a Discover card, but rarely use it.

this actually isn't true at all. siri has become much more capable over the past couple years -- they are continually improving it, they are just quiet about it, too quiet it seems. also, i find siri to be very reliable, the voice recognition has always worked very well for me, fast and accurate. i know others haven't had the same experience. i suggest trying things with siri to see if they work, you may be surprised.

Not sure.... but ....

I remember back when I worked for a couple of small retail computer stores, and later on, when I started my own side business doing on-site PC repair work? Discover was NOT very welcome from the merchant's standpoint. Their fees were higher than VISA or MasterCard (the merchants accepting the card were paying for all those "cash back bonuses" the card promised users).

Thanks to a messy divorce over 10 years ago where my ex managed to writer herself one of those "same as cash" credit card checks off my Discover card and maxed out my $15,000 credit limit on it -- I had to file bankruptcy against them. Ever since, I seem to be blacklisted from ever getting approved for one of their products again. Doesn't bother me much, as I have good credit today and several other good credit cards I've been issued. But the stupid thing is, Discover mails me junk mail solicitations almost every frickin' DAY trying to get me to accept a "pre approved" card from them.

I finally got so tired of shredding them, I applied online to see what would happen. Immediately denied! What idiots, wasting that much money on postage and printing to send me this stuff.

I wonder how big the Discover market is these days. I worked bars and restaurants in the 80s and 90s in a tourist town, when the card was in its heyday, and it was only rarely used then.

EDIT: Since a picture of AMEX is being used for this article, I suppose the lack of a stock photo for a Discover card might be a good indicator. Couldn't even Shop one in.

Fantastic. Apple's current services strategy seems to have drifted away from 'lots of work and a big reveal' (which works well with hardware) and moved to 'work, update, work, update'. Look at Maps and Siri. Not a word on those at keynotes yet continual improvements and looks like Apple Pay is the same. :)

Lots of stuff getting done with that $4 billion R&D budget. Lots of stuff that I think the general public and media don't realize. Google, McSft and maybe Facebook can compete with similar spends. But it is very hard for other entities to play against such a juggernaut.

Instead of complaining to Apple, you should complain to your bank.

Your bank is who is holding up adoption of Apple Pay in the UK. There was an article a few weeks ago about it: UK banks are dragging their feet. They have to make changes to their back-end systems to support the EMVCo tokenization standard.

Apple Radio has a similar problem: you should be complaining to your music licensing agencies in the UK. Apple can't stream music to your phone until the UK licensing agencies agree to a royalty rate for each song.

YES!!!!!

Now I only need synchrony bank to let me add my Banana Republic card and finally accept apply pay in the store!

It's always good news to hear of more banks or cards taken, especially with a larger company like Discover. However, I'm much more interested in Apple adding more stores than I am cards - that's the weakness with Apple Pay right now. I've only used it at three different stores - Panera, Walgreens, and a local used bookstore. (I tried at McDonald's around Christmas and the girl at the drive-thru looked at me like I had 3 eyes!)

FINALLY. Only will take a full year, but I'll get to try out ApplePay for once.

Now just to get my credit union on board.

it's about flippin' time! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not to be a Debbie Downer but I don't see anything to be excited for. It's not going to be rolling out until the fall. It's just the early stages of Spring right now. Fall won't be for several months away and that could very well be mid to late October.

I have no problems going to my neighborhood Walgreens. I can use Apple Pay at any of the random registers in the store. Surprised Panera is so far beyond, Starbucks even had to ability to scan electronic Starbucks cards from the screen of your smartphone long before Apple Pay.
