It’s for families, most of whom don’t have every Disney/marvel/Star Wars/Pixar film ripped to a plex server, and people who want to watch new content like the Star Wars and Marvel TV series which will exclusively be found there.
darn, i guess families like mine will have to continue with getting those "exclusives" elsewhere and using plex then.
its just a shame Disney of all people is leaving money on the table.

Why should I be forced to see ads for something I’m paying for.
well if you want the technical reason its because media companies are immoral and like to double-dip.

people forget that originally most of cable had no ads.

the exception being local channels that reboardcast local content (think your cities local network etc.) which were the only channels to have ads.

thats why cable only channels HBO, for instance, had traditionally longer run times per episode because at most they had "house ads".
but several decades ago hey developed a technology called sub-simming (its the same tech they used for years to remove superbowl commercials in non US countries)
which allowed them to replace the local channels ads (which the cable provider made no money off of with other ads so they could resell that ad space.
then once there ad market was established they kept pushing ads to other channels they had.
the rest is history,

the moral option would be for them use sub-simming to remove ads all together and replace it with music or something else(vines or viral clips maybe)

(which is trivial to do i made a python script to do it back when i used to pirate satellite before NAGRA3 encryption.
anyway you basically make a program watch for changes in overscan and or black frames and the combination tells you were a ad is and when it stops) you then have it change to the other media in between.

but i digress.

Doesn’t seem like they are.
maybe not in this thread but plex's growth in popularity makes me favor my side over the unfounded numbers disney+ may get but we'll have to wait and see

im currently getting the student premium for $4.99 that includes spotify & hulu. With the att announcement the other that it will include spotify on certain plans, i might just have to get on this. $8 more to get disney+ and espn+

Your move, Apple and Netflix.

I am guessing Netflix will minimally have to put an end to raising price every 18 months, as well as no longer charging extra for UHD experience (Disney+ includes UHD for free).

As for Apple, while it could launch Apple TV+ at higher price than Disney+, a bundle that combines Apple Arcade, Music, TV+, and possibly iCloud and News+ would have to be pretty aggressive, minimally "buy 2, get 1 free" (e.g., $19.99 for Arcade, Music, and TV+).
If you read the other Verge article about Disney’s announcement you’ll see that Iger said something about Disney starting with 500 movie titles while netflix is in the thousands. I don’t think it’s an apples to apples comparison yet, and also a great excuse for Disney + to raise prices later. “We added hundreds of new movies and thousands of new shows!”

Disney will raise prices within 18 months guaranteed.

probably not because of the sports thing or maybe its the 2.1TB of disney content on my plex server.
but i want to be.

i love disney stuff and if similarly to how iTunes match converted all my legally pirated music to legit music I want Disney to step up their game to do the same.

also. so i can get HD or better encodes of the old afternoon Disney cartoons, i want all the censored and uncensored version of the OG classics, i would want to finish off my collection of most of the god awful disney channel movies etc.

i realize thats unrealistic and it would require disney to put up their whole catalog which i doubt they ever will but i expected them to hit the mark closer than they did.

if they cant convince a disney super fan like me/my family to get it (who also currently uses hulu occasionally BTW)
well then who is this for.?

I don't think Disney really cares about you in the way you want them to care about. You've already "bought" the Disney content. Just by spending $84 a year on Disney Blu-rays/iTunes/etc makes up for this. You're not really a super fan. You're a collector. There's a difference here.

The goal of this is not to grab 100% of the market. It is instead to integrate you into the brand. People who are Disney fanatics will spend money on everything ranging from Disney hotels/cruises to merchandising to themed events, etc. They are playing the long game, which is not catering to the Plex elitists out there.

Your other ask of something like "iTunes Match" is nonsensical. I would completely forget any assumptions you might have about DRM and legalities when it comes to music content vs video content. They are 2 completely different industries.

I think Disney+(bundle) is still seen as a complement to other services. The content still isn't as "mature" per se as other streaming services. I suspect savvy users will still do the whole subscribe/cancel thing.

Not if the keep producing compelling original content. I've got my fingers cross the Marvel and Star Wars shows are going to be good.

You have the most realistic response-the lowball introductory price will inevitably go up in a matter of time.

Which is really the worst part. Maybe if they grandfather people in then it’s a deal, otherwise I can see myself dropping this and going back to Hulu separately and probably just Disney+. Already have “regular” ESPN via DTVNow so + is kind of a nice inclusion, but now I’m wondering how that will work with my DTVNow subscription - will I be able to use both logins somehow or will I have to choose between one or the other.

After reading other posts this might not be such a great deal and might just subscribe to Disney+ alone smh

Looks like Netflix has been put on notice.

Although this seems like a really good deal on paper, I'm not really a fan of ESPN+. I tried it out for free earlier this year and came away unimpressed. But again, that's just me. I definitely would be more interested in a Disney+ and Hulu bundle. But until my wife and I have kids, we just really need Hulu (which we get for free via Spotify premium).

Don't care for ESPN but Disney+ and Hulu with NO Ad bundle than yeah Disney take my money so this current deal is a big no. Also until Hulu starts streaming in 4K and 5.1 surround still could care less this should considered.

Anybody who follows the real story behind Netflix's success knows that there is no price cut coming. Ever. They are massively in debt, don't charge subscribers the full cost of content, and have already peaked and are now losing US customers. Price increases were always part of their plan because they are closer than you think to insolvency (already confirmed negative cash flow of $3 billion for the second year in a row). The principle on the loan they just took out is $88 million a year. Hulu/Disney+/ESPN+ is going to the Facebook vs MySpace moment redux.

I'm wondering if any posters here with Hulu have any experience with the add-ons like HBO or Showtime? Was it worth it or make sense to just get it a la carte independently? Because if I could get H/D+/E+/HBO (and avoid the HBO Plus monstrosity), then I just might be sold.

These cable corp angst discussions on this, a high tech forum, amaze me.

Millions of TV and Movie viewers have long since "Cut The TV Cable", and now pay little to stay informed and entertained via open internet.

The cable and TV cartels own the internet gate, so we must pay big for our WWW hook ups just to stay connected. The cartel's power and greed has locked out many people from seeing the new fast changing world.

Why continue to support this system ? At least, chop that TV cable and pay them little if you do pay to stream. a2

I'm surprised at the package details. More reasonable than expected. Wonder how long before they start the Netflix price hike boogie?

And an add-free Hulu would see me jumping into this immediately.

Interested to see how Apple positions TV+. This isn't the 2007 handheld market. The content provider game has never been more aggressive. But as long as Comcast is controlling the pipes, does it really matter how nifty a package [insert company name here] has to offer? Said package's performance is still at the mercy of Comcast, right?

Seems to me the real industry redefining move would be to (somehow) usurp the Comcasts of the world. Kind of like when I was hoping Apple was going the MVNO route and peeing in the Verizon and AT&T pools. I guess the infrastructure costs make That move moronic. I've obviously no clue what it takes to develop, maintain and operate a global communications network.

Anyway, is a well-established user base enough to make TV+ relevant? Interested to see how this shakes out.

Not on Xbox One X or LG TVs.

LGTV and XBox One are both listed. The XBox One X should have no issues. If you have an older LGTV maybe it's not getting the update.

One of the only devices left that does NOT get 5.1 via Hulu is AppleTV for some reason. Hopefully that will be resolved soon as well.

HBO is only an add on if you get Hulu Live. Which is $44 with commercials on regular Hulu or $51 without. The add-on HBO is the same price as the HBO NOW app--$15. If you want this disney bundle and not the live channels, you'd need to get the separate HBO NOW app.

HBO MAX (is that what you mean when you say HBO plus) coming later this year/early next year with all the WB/DC/etc content will probably cost a few bucks more than HBO NOW.

Thanks for responding, dance freak

When I do the math, I might actually be better off just sticking with my Spectrum basic cable + sports bundle, and just re-activate HBO NOW whenever there is a show that I want to watch. If you're an NBA fan in the LA-area, it is much simpler to deal with (and that is coming from an NBA LP subscriber who subscribes independently of my cable plan via my Apple devices).

NHL, MLB, NFL fans: what say you? What is your experience like when deciding streaming vs cable?
[doublepost=1565291560][/doublepost]@lazyrighteye This is why I'm hoping Google Fi can somehow be a big success, because at least that would be another legit option as a full time data provider for your home (not just mobile). Google could then just sit back and encourage even more content creators to try and offer direct to consumer channels.

You don't have a lot of options for in-market games in LA if a Lakers fan since Spectrum SportsNet isn't available via any streaming service. If a Clippers fan, Prime Ticket is avail on Hulu Live, ATT TV Now, PSVUE, Fubu.

I also live in LA, but I'm not an NBA fan. I am a football and baseball fan, but my teams are out of market so it's Sunday Ticket streaming and MLB.TV for me. Thankfully I have T-Mobile so get MLB.TV for free every season. Sunday Ticket is its own beast, but I love how MLB is integrated in the TV app on appleTV.

We currently have Frontier Fios TV but a lot of 2-year promos are about to drop off causing our price to skyrocket soon. Plan is to drop TV, create a new account for Fiber Internet savings, and go Hulu Live (no ads) and see how that works out.

I feel similar. I almost feel like it’s better to go back to the early 2000’s and just buy shows and media I care to watch through iTunes alone.

This last month we had to go strictly to the media server for content (we blew through our Comcast terabyte monthly cap) and realized most of it was ads with DisneyNOW.

:(

First world problems.

holy cow. I never thought of that. Luckily I don’t have a data cap. With at&t fiber it’s 300mbps and 1tb for like $70, or up to the 1gb speed and unlimited transfer for $20 more. They souls find a way to not count ads toward the data allotment. That could be close to half the data use.

Only nerds don’t watch sports.

How about another bundle which drops ESPN+ and makes Hulu ad-free for the same money?
[doublepost=1565370032][/doublepost]Disney Match isn’t happening. You might own your Disney movies on Plex but 75% don’t. I also don’t believe you have 2.1 tb of legal Disney unless doing 4k rips.

[doublepost=1565370153][/doublepost]2 weeks is awhile? 4k is worthless without HDR.

Hulu has had 4K and 5.1 for a while now.

Only nerds don’t watch sports.
I am a Nerd, its hard to claim otherwise with a CIT Dipoloma and a Degree in Computer Science that said i do watch sports just not religiously.

Im more the watch the stanley cup, superbowl or grey cup. other than that its only when family or social norms dictate i need to, but its rare enough/not importantly that it cant justify a monthly annuity.

Disney Match isn’t happening.
i doubt it ever would as well, but if their streaming ever had everything it could assuage some potential moral dilemas about parts of my collection.

I cant buy what they dont sell

You might own your Disney movies on Plex but 75% don’t.
I own many/most that one can own (in some cased in multple formats (VHS/DVD/Bluray))

some in the case of disney cartoons/ disney channel stuff I recorded with my DVB-S sattelite card.
after that anything else i didnt already had or had in lower quality i pirated, some of that happened within the 2004=2015 timeframe of legal piracy we had in canada prior to the latest copyright bill.

I also don’t believe you have 2.1 tb of legal Disney unless doing 4k rips.

everything that has been ripped in its highest quality including 4k release when/if they exist.
most rips on the plex server itself are still H.264 but ive now been hardware encoding/reencoding h.265 to save space.

if it was content I owned in "meatspace" like a bluray or DVD its also got a master Image on a drobo (so if i incude them it would be more that 2.1TB but thats disingenuous as i counted their rips in the 2.1TB already and i have to rip them because unfortunately plex doesnt support .iso, .img or even Video_TS folders yet :(
