The problem with Disney+ is that there's virtually no new content worth watching. The umpteenth lousy Star Wars series? Another poorly-executed Marvel series? No thanks. They have a good back catalog of Disney animation, Star Wars, and Marvel. For now, I keep it around in case I want to watch a vintage movie (which isn't very often). At these new prices, with no password sharing? I'll cancel and never miss it.

I dropped them last year when they raised their annual rate by 80%. Screw them.

I'm down to only Apple TV+ right now. With their most recent news of scaling back, looks like dropping them will probably be in the future as well.

Oh well... I care not.

I wonder how many of them have quit and are now subscribing to cable and renting DVDs. 😄
Of the people I know that quit Netflix due to ads and rate hikes, they simply eliminated pay TV & movie entertainment, and it just fell back down below reading & craft/sport/hobbies in terms of importance. For instance, I just watched the olympics ceremony at a friends farmhouse that had those paddle antennas & whatever dozen channels they pick up (all ad-supported but free to view) working perfectly, while I’m lucky if I can get one bar of 5G to stream over, and i’m twice as close to a city as they are. They put it on, watched it, but then turned it back off when it was done and went back to their sewing, home, boat projects for the rest of the night, & read themselves to sleep every night.

Netflix was briefly worth paying for when it had all the content, was ad-free and under $10 a month, but once that went to crap, as everything does eventually, I now just watch water sports and historical & art films, all of which our corporate masters haven't deemed marketable to American audiences, so the only way to see them is to rely on torrents that Eurosport & others make available, and ignore everything else.

If only I could pay one company a flat rate every month to watch everything there is to watch. That'd be nice, no commercials too!

Well, I guess after a while, there would be commercials.

And now there's too many commercials and not enough content.

I sure wish I could just pay for the channels I want, and not have to pay for all this crap.

Hey look, Netflix is a thing, and here comes more like it. I can just pay for what I want! And it's cheap.

Boy this sure is getting expensive. And there's only like one good thing per streaming service. At least there's no ads.

Oh now there's ads. And still not a lot of great content.

If only I could pay one company a flat rate every month to watch everything there is to watch. That'd be nice.

But of course there's commercials...

[The history of TV from the 90s until now.]
You missed a bit...

Wait, what is this ship coming towards me, offering me all the content with no ads for zero monthly fee? I'm off to sea me hearties, the PiraSea...

and they wonder why piracy never goes away...

As I said for Netflix and Amazon, we thought we were enjoying revolutionary services. Instead, we subscribed to very long free-trials. And we paid for them.

I'm always against capitalism. But this strategy of huge corporations selling something at a loss for years until rivals struggle to keep any customer and then raising prices and reducing quality could and should be regulated. There are laws to do it, not sure why the whole world is ignoring them.

Yes, many of them write in every Netflix "changing" thread how they are quitting Netflix in protest... and have quit Netflix 8 or 10 times by now. ;)
I quit Netflix for many reason and one was password sharing. I was convinced that it was a bad move for Netflix and I was wrong.

I share my account with 3 friends. not 100 random people. just 3 close friends. it makes it a 30$ a year I gladly spend for the 4-5 series I actually watch in a year.

If I get banned I'll go fish stuff in some other Torrent, ahoy.

I already have an account, so no reason to cancel it. I don't believe anyone who says they'll cancel because of this actually will.

Real shame about streaming services turning back into cable TV which I loathed. I'm slowly creating my own channel on Plex, but it'll take some time to get going because I don't have entire weekends to manage movie and tv files.

When Netflix said they was going to put a stop to password sharing and MR did a report on it, in that thread many many members said others will follow their suit. Low and behold we are now seeing other companies now doing what Netflix has done. All it takes is one to start and the rest follow.

I’m happy to re-up my subscriptions once or twice a year for a month and watch everything I need to watch. This way, I am supporting the people who create this content, and I’m still saving myself a reasonable amount of money. I’d say it’s a win-win.

The streaming video business playbook:

Phase 1: customer acquisition with decent prices and good quality programming
Phase 2: milk the customer base for all they're worth while slowly lowering the quality of programming

What isn't clear to me is what phase 3 looks like... mass exodus of customers? a consolidation of the market into just a handful of streaming services? something else?

I can promise you: There IS a life without TV-subscriptions! ;)
That's actually the way we go at our home at the moment - just cancel all those subscriptions and maybe keep one you feel have some content at the time

Higher prices, cheaper content, more ads, bundles to discourage churn.

Companies like Amazon and Apple look like they can afford to keep subsiding their streaming services indefinitely. Disney in theory as well (thanks to their parks and merchandising), but it feels like their streaming service has severely damaged the value of their brand. Netflix seems like they just might be the “last man standing” when the dust settles.

Given the current economics, not being in the streaming game might actually be the wisest move.

I guess I’m cancelling Disney+ once my Black Friday deal is up. 2 bucks a month with 1 buck Hulu has been great. I won’t pay these prices. Off to YouTube I go!
I’ve been on promo subscriptions for max, paramount plus, peacock, Disney plus, etc for years. I sign up when there’s a good deal and cancel when it’s over, then sign up again for the next deal. I still share my in-law’s Netflix subscription as well. We’ll see how Disney implements the sharing lock, I’m sure there will be ways around it. And I’m sure there will be promo deals. I don’t even watch TV anymore. My wife does and so do my kids, otherwise I wouldn’t have any of these subscriptions. I mostly watch YouTube. There is some great content out there for free.

Such practice is called "predatory drug distribution". You provide service for free and once there's a significant amount of clients hooked, you start charging for it.

By the way, I've always shared Netflix with 3 friends. When Netflix ended password sharing, Android devices stopped working and start saying I wasn't in the main household, but Netflix on Apple TV always worked... It's been over a year now and we all still share the Netflix password on our Apple TVs and everything works great.

I remember the uproar with Netflix doing this and indeed they lost a few million subscribers over it, a huge amount in Spain for example.

To be fair though, we still share our Netflix and Disney+ passwords with my wifes parents and they have had no issues logging into it.
