“Disney plans start seriously cracking down on password sharing for the Disney+ streaming service in September, Disney CEO Bob Iger said in during today's earnings call (via The Verge).”

Did A.I. write this article or is English the author’s second or third language?

The problem with Disney+ is that there's virtually no new content worth watching. The umpteenth lousy Star Wars series? Another poorly-executed Marvel series? No thanks. They have a good back catalog of Disney animation, Star Wars, and Marvel. For now, I keep it around in case I want to watch a vintage movie (which isn't very often). At these new prices, with no password sharing? I'll cancel and never miss it.
Outside of the US a regular Disney+ subscription also includes Star. This isn’t mentioned much, since Macrumors and the other tech sites are usually US based, but it makes the subscription a lot more worth it.

Good move by Disney+. Controlling blatant theft of services might help keep legal subscriber’s prices from increasing more. More streaming services to follow I’m sure.

"Cracking down on password sharing was successful for Netflix. Netflix stopped allowing multi-household password sharing in 2023, and saw strong subscriber growth in subsequent quarters."

But, but, but what about all the angry posts in tech blog forums about this heinous act? Seemed like very single blog poster was gonna cancel their Netflix subscriptions in protest. Now those same blog posters are gonna cancel their Disney+ subscriptions. Is this the end for Disney+ like it was for Netflix?

I pay for an annual sub, the cost shared by my son & daughter who live in different places, and we share my login. How will the sharing clampdown work, I wonder seeing as I have effectively paid up until March 2025?

You missed a bit...

Wait, what is this ship coming towards me, offering me all the content with no ads for zero monthly fee? I'm off to sea me hearties, the PiraSea...

and they wonder why piracy never goes away...

That’s true, goes between steps four and five, and is a big reason why Netflix exists. They hit the same place and time niche that iTunes did.

But then they figured they had piracy solved by technology. They never did learn the true lesson that if they just stop treating people like criminals, the vast majority of people will stop acting like it. And vice versa…

Ehno thanks. The only reason I have it because of some promo my parents got via their internet provider. I am not gonna pay individually for something i mainly already own on disks from years ago.

Also, when was the last time they actually had a hit show? I feel like the only time ihesr about their non marvel or star wars shows is the cancellation news on Deadline

Ok, you got it that way - Then i see you on September, the 19th! Arrrrrrr! 🏴‍☠️

But i really meant it this way: There really is a life without TV-subscriptions - there always was!
I already have way too little time to spend with family and friends. Sitting outside, having a beer, talking to each other (Not about what show ran yesterday evening on netflix, disney+, amazon prime, etc. pp.) and have a good time together! That is really possible, even without TV-subscriptions. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧👨‍👩‍👦‍👦👩‍👩‍👧‍👧👩‍👩‍👧👨‍👨‍👧

If only I could pay one company a flat rate every month to watch everything there is to watch. That'd be nice, no commercials too!
My total streaming bill is still much lower than my cable TV bill. If only I didn’t need both.

How does this affect those who get Disney + included with a cell phone plan? In this case Verizon. Five cell phones on the same plan.
I wonder that too. Verizon has never required that folks on a family plan be in the same household. I have the bundle included with ours and pay Hulu a few bucks difference for no ads. Waiting to see if I can drop ESPN+ and pickup no ad max but I don’t think that will happen because I inquired about their Netflix deal and there’s no way to pay the difference for premium Netflix. So far I haven’t seen Netflix crack down on us but I’d informed the kids that they might need to chip in a couple extra dollars in the future. That’s still way cheaper than having to get their own account.

The only reason I keep a pretty basic “cloud dvr” cable plan is for some shows my wife likes to record that aren’t available via streaming and the regional sports network which last I checked was higher per month for streaming than the basic cable bill that included it. Local channels would like you to think you gotta have them but truly all the local news and weather is available on Facebook, X and the station’s websites these days so that “viewer safety” crap goes out the window😜

At this point I’ve realized it’s cheaper and better to buy the few shows I watch repeatedly and only pay for things that can give me live sports. Which still gets expensive.

I’m paying close to $30 for Netflix because I want the highest quality stream….problem is, I don’t need 4 streams…. 1 or 2 would suffice. Why not have a cheaper 2 stream for less money for us high quality streamers? Sucks. Just to clarify, the extra $8 is for my daughter….still, top tier is $22.99.

One idea I have to discourage churn is to make the first month cost more than the subsequent months. Right now, you pay the same price every month. What if the first month of Disney+ cost, say, $20, with each subsequent month costing less (like $10). It operates similar to the sunk cost fallacy. Like you have already paid so much for the first month, feels like a waste to have to terminate and reset your subscription every time.
They use discounted longer term subs to promote that feeling. I'm not nearly in a rush to watch everything by a streamer if I've paid for a year. In the meantime, it looks bad to have to pay $20 for a first month of Disney when they're paying maybe half that for something else. Better to have a discounted trial so at least they get some money and some views, than no money and no views, especially if they're pushing ads on people.

By buying, you mean on actual DVD or Blu-Ray, right? If you mean you're "buying" seasons to stream, you've just got an indefinite, revocable lease. They can go out of business, or just stop paying license fees to keep that content on their servers. It does happen.

Ha yes good point. I have some Blu-rays but they are increasingly annoying to play. Need to get around to ripping them.

But yes, the license I have to the shows I’d like to watch is mostly through Apple and some through Amazon. They seem the safest companies to “buy” from even though they both keep junking up their interfaces and inserting more ads and upsells.

I’ve started a Photos album with just all the ads Apple pops up at me every time I open the TV app. It’s disgusting.

I think sooner or later, they will put a cap on how much you can watch per month. For example, for popular TV shows, you are only allowed to watch up to 4 episodes for each season every month.
For movies, you are only allowed to watch 40 hours every month. Or new releases require consecutive subscriptions to watch.
Why? this is to discourage people from binge watching.

I think it's unlikely they would do that. The way streaming services currently try to encourage long-term subscriptions (reduce churn) is by offering discounted 1-year plans e.g., $9.99/month or $99.99/year (equivalent of $8.33/month). Perhaps they could also offer discounted 6 and/or 9 month plans for subscribers who feel 1 year is too long of a commitment.
