Disney+ lost 700,000 subscribers worldwide in recent months, according to Disney's earnings results for the first quarter of 2025.

Disney said it now has 124.6 million Disney+ subscribers, a decrease of 0.7 million compared to its subscriber numbers in the fourth quarter of 2024. The drop in subscribers comes after Disney+ prices increased in the fall. Disney+ with Ads went from $7.99 to $9.99, while Disney+ Ad-Free went from $13.99 to $15.99.

Disney also began cracking down on Disney+ password sharing in September, introducing a "Paid Sharing" plan in the United States, Canada, and parts of Europe. The system restricts account usage to members of a single household, ending support for use across multiple households unless the primary subscriber pays an additional fee.

Q1 2025 marked the first quarter where Disney+ lost subscribers since the service launched, but Disney CEO Bob Iger said during an earnings call discussing the results that the subscriber churn was not as bad as expected.

For the second quarter of 2025, Disney expects Disney+ subscriptions to see another decline. While Disney+ subscriptions were down, Hulu gained 1.6 million subscribers, during the quarter, reaching 53.6 million total paid subscribers.

Disney's overall revenue grew 4.8 percent during the quarter, largely thanks to Moana 2, which earned more than $1 billion in theaters.

Well I guess that worked out to be quiet the profit for them.

I am so happy I ditched all streaming subscription about a year ago. We are back to the point where just buying the quality stuff is less expensive while others just go back to pirating slowly. It’s been a blast, but the glory days are over.

Pretty reasonable tradeoff between sub count and revenue increase. Not everyone is as powerful as Netflix.

Yep. The only streaming services we have are because they're bundled with something else - Disney for Verizon, and TV+ with Apple One. We wouldn't pay for either otherwise. As you said, the glory days are long gone.

And Plex has been a huge help. :)

I kept it only because it costs me 2 euros per month for the rest of the year, then I’m done. That’s great news—hopefully, it sends a message to other streamers. These endless price hikes with no incentives are madness.

So they're making an extra $250 million a month on the $2 price increase - and lost out on between $5.6 million and $9.8 million on the canceled subscribers. I'd take that deal if I were them!
Agreed. Going from 125.3 million subscribers to 124.6 million is hardly a big deal when the amount being charged to the current subscribers more than makes up for the loss. Even Disney’s CEO said they were anticipating a loss in subscribers and it wasn’t even as bad as they expected.

I guess keep jacking it up then?

It's sort of what happened with normal cable TV ... those that HAD to have it just kept paying more and more and more..... and then more and more...

Have at it I guess if it's that important to someone 🤷‍♂️

Meanwhile, I miss none of it
It's actually incredible how little TV I watch

Outside of some football and NHL Playoffs, I watch literally no TV at all -- just movies

Unfortunately, as long as the math works in their favor, they don't care. That extra $2/month probably far exceeds the loss of 700,000 subscribers. At some point, however, the madness needs to stop. I don't mind the occasional price increase, but the rate has far exceeded the rate of inflation. I wouldn't be surprised if it exceeds even the US college tuition rate.

TV (incl movies) play a major part in people's lives.
I do not take MR as representative generally speaking, but in the Community section on the first page there are 9 threads that cover TV and movies, 2 cover books incl audio books.
That tells you something ...

We recently did a big purge of streaming services. Saving close to $150 a month (that includes canceling YouTubeTV)

I cancelled my older relatives off DirecTV Stream and moved them to Pluto TV

Has all the old shows they like and some good movies that cycle through ... has ADs ... just like DTV Stream does

Even has some news ..

I have no clue why people are paying for YTTV or DTVs beyond sports (I think Sports must be THE reason)

<1% loss of subscribers after a 15-25% price hike. That'll show'em!

Really, guys, it's just a matter of math. They know they'll lose subscribers with price hikes, and maybe with cracking down on passwords (narrator: Netflix has shown quite on the contrary). But it doesn't matter, a $1 increase in price more than makes up any of those potential losses.

I unsubscribed from D+ months ago, partly because price had doubled over time, partly because my last paid year I had watched next to nothing on their platform (Ashoka, The Acolyte and not much more, and both kinda sucked). It's really a pity, because they have an awesome movie library and very good video/audio quality, and I'd gladly pay 5-7€/month just to have it there, when I want it. But I'm not gonna pay 14€/month just to watch stuff occasionally. And they know I don't matter.

We were using YTTV for sports, but with a preschooler I don’t have time to watch them enough to justify over $80 a month. When I was single, sure I can watch a college football game on Saturday followed by the F1 race on Sunday morning and my local NFL team in the afternoon.

But I’m lucky to get one of those events a month with a three year old running around - if my wife takes him for 2 hours I’m going to want to use that time to exercise, not watch TV, and then will need to watch him for a couple of hours to give my wife the same break she gave me. And that’s before you factor in his activities, seeing friends/family, etc.
