Not too surprised. I cancelled my Disney+ after they hiked the price for the second time in 12 months. Disney+ is good, but not good enough to make me want to endure that nonsense. Between Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Apple TV+ (albeit only for Severence and Silo), I've got more than enough premium streaming right now.

Admittedly it's probably worth it if you have young kids, though. Lots of good family Disney stuff on it.

So they're making an extra $250 million a month on the $2 price increase - and lost out on between $5.6 million and $9.8 million on the canceled subscribers. I'd take that deal if I were them!

They aren't making an extra $250mm/month because a huge portion of their subscribers get it free with some other service, get it in a bigger bundle or are signed up for some promotion/trial.

Still a great deal for them but they aren't getting that extra $2 from everyone.

I guess keep jacking it up then?

It's sort of what happened with normal cable TV ... those that HAD to have it just kept paying more and more and more..... and then more and more...

Have at it I guess if it's that important to someone 🤷‍♂️

Meanwhile, I miss none of it
It's actually incredible how little TV I watch

Outside of some football and NHL Playoffs, I watch literally no TV at all -- just movies
My solution is to subscribe to at most one streaming service at a time, because I found I was paying subscriptions for services I often didn't use for more than one billing period. That's a waste of money.

If there's something I want to watch, subscribe to the service that has it, and unsubscribe the same day. Then I have a month to watch (binge) whatever they have that interests me.

If something comes up on another service, subscribe to that one the next month.

It's not like cable where you have to be subscribed when something is aired.

Disney said it now has 124.6 million Disney+ subscribers, a decrease of 0.7 million compared to its subscriber numbers in the fourth quarter of 2024. The drop in subscribers comes after Disney+ prices increased in the fall. Disney+ with Ads went from $7.99 to $9.99, while Disney+ Ad-Free went from $13.99 to $15.99.
Trying to link their Fall price increase announcement for North America market to subscriber declines in their International markets.... Wow. Just wow. Terrible journalism.

Disney+ subscribers increased in the U.S. and Canadian market even with the price increase.

Many subscribed on a yearly basis. I cancelled the moment the year was up. So I imagine more cancellations are in the works.

Price increase : 25%
Subscribers lost : <1%

They've clearly won. But these subscriptions are being way too expensive now. These companies are laughing at us

Something to think about but I bet a lot of Disney+ subscribers are mostly from phone, internet, grocery, and even credit card perks (digital credits like Amex) and other companies. Here's a small list of billing partners and anything that says 'Eligible <business> Customers' means it's a free perk with a supported tier which most folks will opt for.

Not even a half a percent of their entire subscriber base.

I mean losing 0.5% of your subscribers is still statistically significant. But I’m kinda surprised they didn’t lose more subscribers. Basically 199 out of 200 people are saying “I’m fine with paying more”.

I am subscribed to Netflix and Prime Video. Might just start AppleTV+ for some shows. In general, I keep it under reasonable limits. Eventual price hikes are inevitable and are part of life. So choose wisely to what you subscribe.

Yes the pricing is a problem. But so is the content… marvel, Star Wars, it’s all garbage now.

I have a -26 year old subscription with Canal+ for 23€ (Canal+ (almost all the Canal+ Channel), Paramount+, HBO+, Netflix, Apple tv+) and in it there was only in December Disney+, Although I like Disney+ I did not renew the subscription despite an offer at 3€ per month for 6 months.
WE MUST STOP ALWAYS TAKING US FOR MILLIONAIRE CASH COWS

at those prices, a year's worth of a subscription equates to about $192. their movies are about $9.99 and up. say you're conservative, you can just skip the subscription and buy all of the disney animation classics and whatever else you want and have them forever in your digital library for less

they've priced themselves out of reason

Not enough people voting with their wallets.

So long as the amount they lose from people cancelling is less than the amount they gain from everyone else footing a price hike; they will continue to do it.

Since an overwhelming number of people bent over and took it without a complaint; they'll likely do it again soon (probably in another territory first) before circling back around for sloppy seconds.

Unless they would otherwise have gotten a 20% increase in subscribers, but I guess that's not likely.

They might've reached a plateau in subscriber count growth and figured out that they're okay with shaking down more money from less people.

Plus all those people that ubsubbed are suddenly potential customers in the future.

We need to get back to advocating for physical media. Even standard 1080p Blu-Rays look MUCH better than 4k streaming.

YouTube Premium is my only subscription. Everything else is FAST Channels. Tubi, Pluto, Roku, etc. These streaming services aren't worth paying for

That's me too (other than my Plex library for movies)

Amazing how well the FAST channels cover me if I want to catch some old comfort food shows or a random movie I don't have. They are sort of like the old TV experience I remember from the 80's/90's in some ways. Just simpler and free

Exactly what I have done. I have gotten rid subscriptions for a year now and those moves are going on blu ray and 4k bluray. With a good Oled tv and speakers the quality is unparalleled. I have the same feeling that even the normal blu ray is much better.

I wish Netflix had experienced subscriber losses when they pulled the password sharing BS, but they somehow managed to grow subscribers. Of course they were just the first domino and everyone else got "brave" enough to implement the same BS. I've canceled every service that started doing that other than Max, which I get free through my carrier. They have no justification for implementing such policies other than greed. At least with cable there were actual physical infrastructure considerations. Sucks people are willing to bend over like that. The people that go as far as defending these services and saying stupid things like "you shouldn't abuse or steal from the service" are actually insane. They can keep getting shafted with a longer and longer rod while I happily enjoy my Plex server and sharing with my family.
