Not surprised, all about the almighty dollar at Disney. 🥴

I dropped D+ for a few reasons. Yes, The Mandalorian was good fun, but there’s only so much content I wanted to see anyway. The original shows I am interested in won’t be launched until late 2021 or 2022 [if that], so I will wait until then.
We got it for one month and will probably get it for one month each year.

Why? apple buying Disney would not reduce competition in content at all. There’s nothing in antitrust law that would prevent one company that is not a competitor in an industry or a vertical industry from buying another company. It’s no different than Comcast, etc. all being allowed to buy studios.
Because Apple has a PR problem. Opposition to mergers are generally political. In the current environment it will perceived as unfair wether or not it actually is. Disney in particular is very well connected company. Disney does not want to be purchased. They have made that clear. Hostile takeovers are for hedge funds, not for companies that position themselves publicly as the “good guys”. In the EU in particular you don’t necessarily need to be in the same industry to be create an anti-competitive environment. The Microsoft breakup talks started in the EU over what in hindsight seems silly.

yeah, but that’s not how antitrust laws work.

How did a thread about Disney+ turn into arguments about Apple???

people pirate because they want to pirate. and believe they have a right to other people’s stuff.

No. Most people pirate because they can't get something any other way. For example, right now there are few options for watching movies on the video player you prefer. You can't watch the Mandalorian on VLC or See on Kodi. Steve understood that DRM led to music piracy, but the movie studios haven't figured it out. Once most people can download a movie in seconds they are going to realize they have to compete with free.

You will never convince people that when they buy music that they don't have the right to make a mix tape, nor will you convince people that when they buy a movie they don't have the right to let their friend borrow it. The idea that digital movies and TV shows can't be shared will drive the average person to pirate it until they can.

with respect, your post proves my point that people believe they have a right to other people’s content.

If XYC studio says we will only sell content in a certain format or with a certain streaming company. Or in certain countries..... its their right to do so. just as it’s my right not NOT buy their product if I don‘t like the format they use or do business with the streaming company I don’t use. My quality of life won’t be diminished by their choices.

i don’t then act like a spoiled child and try to get my own way.

The issue is what distributors think are their rights and what consumers think are theirs are at odds. Just because a studio says we only want people to consume this in one way doesn't mean consumers will or should respect it. The digital age doesn't jive with the doctrine of first sale. The courts can say you own the CD not the song, but that doesn't change the way consumers perceive their purchase. Good luck explaining why you can make a backup of a CD of a VHS but you can't make a backup of an iTunes purchase. Education doesn't work because all they hear is that you refuse to sell them what they want to buy. When a pirate comes by and says I can give you exactly what you want for free, and you can't buy it, you take the free copy. Like it or not, this ushers in the issue where you now have to compete with free versions of your work. The music industry learned the hard way that if you don't give customers the option to buy what they want than the only way to win them back is a better product at a lower cost. Thing is, had the music industry acted sooner they could have given people what they wanted at a higher cost and they would have paid it.

It has nothing to do with acting like a spoiled child. It's just standard market forces at work. If you don't give me what I want than someone else will.

But there is a bigger point to all this. We aren't talking about a random widget. Music and movies are a part of culture. And when something is embedded into popular culture it becomes owned by the community. You can scoff at that, but it doesn't change that fact. Temporary exclusive licences were developed to give creators time to profit on an idea. This was only to delay community ownership as permanent exclusivity is unsustainable.

As big media got bigger it looked to steel public domain works from the public and people are not so apt to forgive them for this. A movie should be free for use in under 15 years, and when you tell people that Disney gets to own it beyond their lifetime consumers no longer have incentive to respect any rights Disney may claim they have. The attitude becomes if it won't be free in time for me to be nostalgic than I am not going to pay for it today. And why should they if you have already stolen so much from them already? Stealing from a thief doesn't feel wrong.

Evidence of this comes from people no longer differentiating between Disney and small creators. YouTube is old enough that early content on the platform should now be public domain. The fact that we are not celebrating that milestone is a demonstration of what is broken about the laws.

No, that’s not $150/month. Apple tV+ is free for a year if you purchase hardware. Otherwise $5.
YouTube premium is $12
Hulu/Disney plus/espn+ bundle is $12
Netflix is $13 (for hd)
Prime video is $9
HBO max is $15

So your whole list, plus Hulu, is $66 a month.

And nothing’s stopping you from buying one of these for a month, watching everything you want, cancelling, and then picking something else and watching everything you want on that service.

Sounds like you are trying to find justification for being a criminal.
There are many people who still live on a dollar a day in America and around the world.
