So excited about this news. But I might hopd off until the ‘they’ve got 112.9m’ announcement before popping the champagne.

I like Disney. Not currently subscribed but I probably will be again at some stage. Like most of these services I feel they are best bought and used in short bursts rather than having them constantly sucking money out of your account for long periods between new movies or seasons. Disney has some amazing content but once you've seen what you want, there's little reason to keep the sub running permanently. Unless maybe if you have a young family and/or money to burn. Which of course is also fine. Different strokes for different folks and all that jazz.

Just because Disney makes more money than Apple doesn’t mean Apple’s content isn’t any good. Just like you don’t see Marvel and Star Wars winning Oscars, doesn’t mean they’re bad. And just because Oscar winners have low box office numbers doesn’t mean they’re bad movies. I think there is a place for Apple TV+ and Apple is a complete newcomer to this space entirely. Disney has been making content for many decades, or close to a century? Idk when Steamboat Willie came out. People said Apple wouldn’t just figure out phones but phones are a lot closer to computers than phones are to making a movie or tv show.

I have Disney+, ATV, Netflix, HBO, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ is by far my least watched streaming service. They have a great library of stuff I’ve already seen, but nothing coming out excites me. I have enjoyed a lot of ATV shows, and find it well worth $5/month. Maybe Disney+ is worth it if you have young children, but I don’t think I’ll be renewing it when my annual subscription ends.

How many of them are still on that free year from verizon ?
Not everyone lives in the states or has Verizon, and Disney still get revenue from Verizon for that 'free' year. So that negates your 'Verizon' theory :)

103 Million subscribers is impressive, and they still have plenty of countries to expand into.

I keep telling myself I’m going to cancel, wait a year then binge on the Marvel content their putting out by I headed the warning on WandaVision and stuck with it for the first 4 episodes and the payoff was huge. I’ve not started Falcon and the Winter Soldier yet. Is that any good???

When I first heard that Disney+ monthly cost is expected to be as low as $6.99, I knew it would register a huge number of users extremely quickly.

The biggest problem with Disney+ is that it offers almost no other languages. Come on, at least with a list of different subtitles first!!

On the other hand, AppleTV+ did well at language availability, but it has almost NONE catalogs AT ALL, if it wants to stay relevant, it needs to add new titles at a faster pace than Netflix and Disney+.
Here in Spain I can pick from 5 to 20 languages depending on the movie.

I’m not surprised, they started with a ton of known content and kids are a major factor also. I don’t get the comparison to TV+ though. You really can’t compare a brand new service with all original content to a conglomerate like Disney with years and years and known content. Personally, I think the original content on TV+ is better than the Star Wars/Marvel rehashes on Disney anyway.

Yes it is - nothing like WandaVision - tremendous character development.

Let’s really put all of this into perspective with global subscriber counts based on recent company reports and analyst estimates.

Disney+ 103 million
HBO MAX 63 million
Peacock 42 million
Hulu 41 million
Paramount+, Showtime, and BET+ 36 million
Starz 15 million

I tried to get the most accurate information I could for these guys. Its possible I’m off on the numbers. Now Apple doesn’t give out their numbers so all we can do is go off of analyst estimates for Apple TV+

Apple TV+ at end of 2020 was estimated at 40 million subscribers.

The analyst does not give an estimate for 2021. It’s estimated that 62% of that is on a promotional plan. That means it’s possible that just shy of 25 million Apple TV+ subscription are on a paid plan. Again this is just an estimate from an analyst. Another analyst could have totally different number. But if this is accurate I think Apple is doing a good job and has a good path to success.

We know at least 90 shows, limited series or movies currently in development or in production. And it’s looking like Apple will have a new release almost every Friday June-August. Not sure about fall and winter yet. But they have a lot of potential and this service is a few years out before we can consider it a failure. Keep the faith. It’s going to be great.

They had no choice because without their own streaming content they would be at risk by depending on Netflix etc...because they could have been bought by Google like Nest and been locked out of content.

Sorry but who is the “they” you are referring to?

Agreed. Coming right off the OMFG from WandaVision, I was slightly winded and a twinge underwhelmed at the start of Falcon and Winter Soldier. I then realized, “duh”, this is different and it starts a new story. I enjoyed it greatly, and looking forward to it tying into future movies. Avoid reading any Marvel news until you watch this or you’ll be spoiled fast.

I’m excited for Loki now! Hurry up June 11!

I liked one show on Apple TV+ (Ted Lasso), all other shows are way too cleaned out for me. If Apple continues to only produce shows that would pass Jack Dorsey's most critical gazes then I will not turn my free subscription into a paid one.

It also needs a standalone app. It could be identical to how Apple Arcade works if you have a game downloaded but don't have a subscription.

At launch they should have had a Apple TV+ tab. Now that we have that, that's the best we're going to get.

Apple has some really good shows, though.

Disney has a great back catalog but their rate of new content is glacial. We are now on the one month of the year plan. Just not worth it for us otherwise.
The only thing I have seen on Disney+ is the Mandalorian, that’s it. I think it’s definitely not for me...
I actually do prefer the vibe and more exploration grounds offered by ATV+ for me: I’ll take Losing Alice, Defending Jacob, Servant to name a few besides the usual known ones before yet another patronizing “all your problems can be solved once you get super powers and the let’s add some super problems” trope.

I just wish those movies weren't $35 up here in Canada.

I won't pay $35 for Black Widow, and didn't pay $35 for Mulan or Raya either. Disney+ is tempting me with Shang-Chi in September, but that's almost twice what I was paying for movies at the 4K laser IMAX theatre pre-Covid.
You paid $17.50 to watch a movie multiple times in a theatre pre-Covid?

Being sarcastic because the $35 means you can watch it multiple times with friends or family for one price. No theatre price is coming close to that deal

Who said I wanted to watch it multiple times right away? I usually wait months before watching it again. By that time it will be "free" on Disney+ anyway.

Plus, that theatre is one of the best ones in North America. Dual 4K laser IMAX projectors.

Even though I have a 65" OLED TV and Dolby 5.1.2 Atmos sound system at home, it just doesn't compare of course. While I prefer my home system to most suburban mall theatres, that Toronto Scotiabank IMAX theatre is a whole different universe.

Anyhow, the argument is moot now. Disney today just announced they won't be putting Shang-Chi on Disney+ Premier Access. It's going to be a theatrical-only release.

Hopefully Toronto is safely out of the lockdown by then. And as I've said, I've already got my two vaccine doses so I'm good to go.

haha yes you don't want kids to browse prime or netflix, especially with the horrible algorithm that turns almost every search into some horror pron rabbit hole. Sooo much torture garbage of young blond pretty things it makes me believe hollywood is sick.
Never ran into the any pron rabbit hole but if you designate an account for kids Netflix still advertises their TV-MA content in the channel. HBO you can make your account for teens and all the PG-13 movies disappear and it just shows you shows for 5 year olds. Sometimes I wonder if anyone in Silicon Valley actually has children.
