I wonder when Apple will announce it reached 100.000 paying ATV+ customers 😅

Seriously though, ATV+ has some great content but no way I’m becoming a paying customer. Unless it is included in a bundle I’m getting anyway. The Disney library is on another level.
Never....😈

That's funny because it's easily the worst for me. I've subscribed to almost every single streaming service trial thinking that I won't find anything to watch but I'm always amazed at how many good shows I find. I cannot say the same for Disney and I never check in with Disney except for when new Mandalorian episodes are available. Every other show I've either seen (as a child) or just don't care at all and I like Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar. Of course I have no kids and I'm getting Disney for free so I have no good reason to check in but I'm surprised that Disney doesn't have more original content.
Yeah unless you are a hardcore Star Wars or Marvel nerd and/or have kids, Disney+ probably isn't for you.

If I am not mistaken, Disney will be raising prices at the end of the month. It will be interesting to see if the majority of people pay the increase or cancel service.
Nah, they’ll pay. Look at Netflix. Their subscriptions have withstood years of price creep.

I kindly disagree with this, there is a ton of original content on Disney+. You may not be in the target audience but it's there. My kids watch baking shows show and craft shows. There is a show that takes you behind the scenes of Animal Kingdom. I particularly enjoyed The Imagineering Story and Gallery Star Wars: The Mandalorian (behind the scenes of the show).

Plus they have a ton in the pipeline.
The world according to Jeff Goldblum is amazing as well!

I became suscriptor before the rise of the subscription price, when it was still 7€/month, mainly for Wandavision and Mandalorian, but I am hyped for the new Marvel shows like Falcon & The Winter Soldier, or Loki. Really, really looking forward to watching them.

However, when the price finally rises for me as well, to 9€, in august/september, I will think twice before keeping my subscription.

Apple TV+ is an unnecessary service.

If they had been able to bundle all of the major networks and shows into one streaming service at an affordable price that would have been compelling, but it seems like everybody is trying to become a major player in streaming so it’s no longer possible.

Easily the best deal out there, as far as streaming services go!

I used the D23 code at launch to prepay 3 years of the service, locked in at ≈ $3/month- making it a particularly amazing value, but even at the new price… it’s fabulous.
Access to movies while still in theaters, an insane back catalogue of shows & movies, plus the biggest ramp up of top tier original content since the advent of streaming… not surprisingly it is a juggernaut!

That's how all services start, and it's a really good strategy to grow fast. Disney+ will keep increasing prices until it matches Netflix or even surpasses it. Look up Loss Leader Strategy.

On another note, D+ has horrendous UI/UX (what kind of video streaming services doesn't have a next episode button?) and loading speeds. Yeah I pay less but god damn using it's so god damn infuriating to use.

Gotta say I liked the first 6 months or so, Star Wars & Marvel in 4K was a really good selling point, and in my opinion it was totally worth it for Mandalorian and Wandavision and the new series due to come out.

Got really excited about Star given all the other studio's content Disney has access to then really disappointed, thought it would have a huge back catalogue but it turns out in the UK at least it's a pretty sad addition, for me mostly old crap I've seen over and over, seems like Disney looked at all their studios back catalogues and thought "screw it what's at the bottom of the barrel that we can't licence to Prime or Netflix? yeah shove it on Star" 🙁

NO surprise there !

They've knocked it out of the park !

AAPL, on the other hand, is dumping $5B+ USD per year into AppleTV+ just trying to stay above water !

Unless / Until AAPL goes after Live Sports, they have ZERO chance of their TV service being a success !

Live Sports gives them an opportunity to bring their Camera Tech into the mix, which NONE of the other players could do.

Is Tim Cook wise-enough to see the opportunity ?

Time will tell, but my guess is Nope !

Until further notice, I maintain my D+ "Insight Grade" on Tim Cook !
Hold on is Applenot wasting mony on ponless sports crap, interresting, I might just sign up

I think your statement "access to movies while still in theaters" needs clarification. You have to pay $29.95 to view the movie that just hit theaters, if you want to view it right away. Months later, they drop that fee and then you can stream it as part of your monthly subscription. The one service that does allow you to view new movies that just hit theaters without paying, minus the monthly fee for that service of course) is HBOMax.

“Heavily“ is a subjective term. On what scale is their investment heavy?
Sadly, paying well-known stars an outrageous amount of money.
$2M per episode to Aniston.
$2M per episode to Reese Whiterspoon
$1M per episode to Momoa
etc.
Now translate it in subscribers ( 12 months x 4.99 = $60, rounded).
The cost of just the three stars above for one season of their show (10 episodes) equals to 833,333 yearly subscribers.

It will take Apple time before they can build up a catalogue. It some high quality shows and movies. The only thing letting it down is the limited number of shows. Their approach is totally different to the likes of Netflix and Disney. They are focusing solely on original content. They shouldn’t be compared. They don’t have a back catalogue to fall back on.
You hit it out of the park! Apple TV+ original content is far ahead of Disney+. They have chosen to make original programming vice buying studio after studio and rehashing movies that have been seen dozens of times.

I just wish Disney was doing like HBOMax. Releasing Day 1 streaming and theater for 30 days instead of charging for releases

I completely agree here. But it really doesn't come as a surprise that Disney is charging us to watch films that are in theaters. Although the new releases like Mulan didn't interest my wife and I to pay $30 to watch it.

So it looks like it's Netflix, Disney+ and then everyone else.

By five months after launch, Disney+ already had over 50 million subscribers thanks to Disney's wealth of existing content and original shows like "The Mandalorian" and "WandaVision."

How could 50M subscribers at 5 months (April 2020) be "thanks to" WandaVision, which didn't debut until January 2021??

Free with Verizon. Otherwise might get it one month of year to watch any original programming. Same with atv+ if they ever get a show worth watching. But for now both keep giving it away.

None of these services are worth a sustained sub unless it comes with something. Even Netflix is in the rotation now (usually active only half the year). Only Amazon is sustained due to prime shipping (along with Verizon and Disney).

Apples will never be much. Will always be a money pit. Still functions as more of a gateway to get people to purchase other channels through iTunes that apple can get 30% of. Apple would need some franchises. Either get very lucky. Or buy them.

Agreed. Every once in a while, I open Disney+, gaze at the cool Marvel/Star Wars/Pixar content that I've seen numerous times, and think "okay, if i don't want to rewatch Star Wars again for the hundredth time, what is there here to actually watch?" (other than new Mandalorian, as mentioned)

I read an article somewhere about the problem with streaming live sports. The biggest issue is that it's highly regional and for these streaming companies to get Netflix-size subscription numbers, they need global content. So sports streaming involves high costs and only offers regional subscription increases. Their conclusion was that barring some fundamental changes, sports will not be a major draw.

It kinda makes sense too. Outside of global events like the Olympics, sports are regional. If they get the license for NFL, they can increase US subscription numbers, but that won't translate to global subscriptions. Likewise, if they license a European football league, that will increase European subscriptions, but may not even translate to other soccer playing regions.

Something like the English Premier League would be global enough. Gaining in the USA, hugely popular in Asia and with plenty of players from mainland Europe.

But Apple seem very timid. They need a Game of Thrones.

Disney opened itself up to new markets in the past 6 or so, which could account for a good portion of the rapid rise in subscriptions.

I love the fact that all these services can be month-to-month. I have the annual subscription to Disney+ (obviously, look at my handle), as well as recurring HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, and Prime subscriptions.

I can see that each may not be for everyone, but at least you can binge stuff once it's all out (if you can avoid online spoilers) and then cancel the service.

I greatly enjoy the Disney+ core categories, from the old-school Merrie Melodies to the Nat Geo stuff, and now I do not have to keep updating my Pixar, Marvel, or Star Wars collections to the next HD format.

I also like how they are staggering their releases: moving from The Mandalorian, to Wanda Vision, to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, etc. will keep me on for a while. I often catch the shows weekly, then binge them when they complete so I can get all the details I missed in one shot (I'm getting old and my memory isn't what it used to be). :)

The real question is when will Disney get the rights to Spider Man, and how much will they pay to get it.
Well they got a good deal with Sony to include Spidey in the MCU which has been amazing so far (apparently the deal has been further extended to many more movies). It must be very frustrating for Marvel studios though, that they cannot use their flagship character without consulting with Sony first.

It’s unlikely apple will bid and land a game of thrones. And even that wasn’t a real franchise for HBO unless they have spin-offs going on. (No clue). Apple has a lot of work to do but it’s unclear what they want out of it. It’s a hobby pretty much with little commitment.
