I highly doubt Disney would remove content from iTunes. This streaming service is not a replacement for digital locker purchases. Many people will buy the digital copy for convenience/collection AND have the subscription account.
Wish Disney would do 4K on iTunes it’s getting annoying that every company is doing 4K and Disney is not because Apple refuses to increase the price which I agree with Apple with

This is most likely an introductory price. Netflix has been in business for more than a decade.

Maybe. But it will last at least a year (since you can buy by the year). And while Netflix has been in business that long, they haven’t been streaming that whole time.

Disney is of coarse awesome, but who hasn’t already seen most of those movies?

There are 500 movies coming to the service. I’m sure you’ve seen many of the big ones, but that’s a decent number of movies.

lol @ everyone saying "OMG WHAT A GREAT PRICE!"

Said everyone with every streaming service over the past 8 years. And what happened? All these services have raised their prices.

It's called baiting. People are happily paying $15.99/mo for Netflix 4K. You think Disney won't at least raise prices over the next 3-5 years to match that? Better be prepared to pay at least $180+/yr.

And who hasn't seen all these movies before? You're going to sub to Disney+ to watch Star Wars for the umpteenth time? Or Marvel movies? Or the animated movies? I guess if you have kids it might be good. Maybe when Disney+ has a good collection of new original shows and content I'll sub.

Disney has removed content from Netflix. And if you think Disney hasn't already played "withhold the content" game with Apple, think again. Keen eyed people will have noticed that Disney has deliberately withheld 4K versions of their movies from Apple iTunes over the past couple years. Petty.

A lack of 4k sources has me on netflix but it's only a cancel button away. With the disney stuff I'm kinda ready for the Endgame myself when it comes to Marvel. The movies are more than enough but I don't need a disney sub for those. These series don't really interest me. Likewise for Star Wars which i consider butchered since Disney took over.

As for ATV, I've no interest for awhile. It'll need to be built up. We'll know soon enough if these shows are worthwhile or not.

I will say that I must be one of the few, but I don't use the TV app on apple tv (or the provided apple tv remote..so no siri either). I hardly click on it that is. I do see the recently viewed things at top of screen once the app is highlighted and THAT is primarily what I use (and it can be hit and miss whether it works or not). The app itself is garbage. Watching a series in itunes sucks. That shouldn't be the case. I'd rather watch a series using almost any other 3rd party app and that says a lot. Which in other words means I PREFER an app like netflix over this garbage tv app of Apple's.

I'm cancelling Netflix. It's not worth holding onto a subscription that renews again and again. I may pick it up again, once in a while, but I'll be also picking up Disney+ for short stints. That seems to be the way to do things these days. This may be how Netflix gets burned for releasing all episodes immediately. I can burn through the one series that I want to see in a week, then cancel and try other services. If they released them weekly, and spread them out, I would feel more of an urge to keep the service longer than a month.

I don't think I've ever used the TV app on ATV either, so we're in the same boat. I prefer using the actual apps like Netflix, YTTV, HBO NOW, etc. Maybe that'll change once Apple overhauls the TV app, but I doubt it.

That is because Disney is temporarily licensing the content to Netflix as oppose to selling in a store. The iTunes transaction is not the same as temporal licensing rights. Once you buy off iTunes, it’s stored in your digital locker probably for your lifetime. In addition, Disney has their own digital locker now (I forgot what it’s called) that will allow you to tether those purchases to this.

If Disney removes their content from iTunes, they mind as well remove their physical boxes from all stores such as Amazon, Walmart, Target, etc right?

I think you might find it redundant that Disney will have multiple ways of obtaining content, but the high margins / low cost for some of these products impact very little on Disney’s overall strategy.

Cable is looking cheaper with all these streaming apps now.

Duh, I used to argue with a former co-worker that unbundling and subscribing to select channels will cost more, not less money than cable or satellite but he never believed me - its simple math people. He also thought Net Neutrality was a necessity to stop the evil corps from ruing the internet they created - yeah he was a fool.

I don't think one childrens' entertainment channel will kill Netfilx.
Nope. The billions in debt they continue to accumulate, producing tons of original programming regardless of quality, will kill them as all third party content is stripped from their offerings by their competitors, along with their subscribers.

I was hoping for more like $15/mo with all you can eat of any Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel or Fox movie or TV show. They’re probably holding that for later. Their strategy is probably to introduce it really cheap, get people signed up and hooked in, and then raise the price each year as they add more content.

I’ve actually been avoiding buying Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, and Marvel movies for the past couple years since they don’t do 4K HDR. It’s going to be pretty crappy if they don’t put them all on here and yet not offer them for sale in iTunes.

Given the price, netflix’s Pricing looks ridiculous.

I was thinking the same thing.

$6.99 a month is going to crush Netflix, especially once they lose the Disney content. Their original movies and shows in no way justify their price.

The other big competitor that should be in fear is HBO. Their original programming inarguably much stronger than Netflix but at $14.99 a month for HBO GO and losing GOT this year they have no benchmark/tent pole series anymore. I mean, maybe Westworld, but that’s subscribe for one month, binge watch, see you next year.

I thought it was just going to be their old stuff and new movies. I didn’t realize they were making a bunch of new shows. $70/year is a no brainer to get for my kids.

I pay for Amazon Prime just for shipping and rarely use the streaming. I love my Netflix subscription for all the originals. I may subscribe to HBO for a month each year to watch shows (not sure after GoT is over).

I really don’t see the need for Apple’s steaming service. I’m concerned they are going to get too involved and not have any adult content. There has already been rumors that Apple execs are getting involved in the shows. I don’t need two kid services, and I’ll be choosing Disney over Apple.

Again, don't worry. You can access all the gore, graphic violence and sex you want just a click away on the Internet, so when you get bored with Disney or Apple, it won't be a problem.

You don’t have to subscribe to any—none at all!

Someone else might want Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Apple, Disney, HBO, Criterion, Showtime, WarnerMedia, Britbox and Crunchy Roll, plus OTT cable like Sling/YouTubeTV/DirecTV Now.

If there’s a problem with this, I don’t understand what it is.

The problem is, all of these companies expect consumers to subscribe to every little thing on top of all of the other subscription services that are pushed on consumers for everything in daily life nowadays. My complaint is with the general expectation that people are supposed to be okay with having a subscription and a payment plan for everything in life today. It's just getting out of hand. I hate subscriptions and I hate payment plans for phones, etc. especially.

My guess is ATT is going to offer HBO as a lower priced add-on subscription to their new streaming service, thus making ATTs service much more attractive than other options for those who watch HBO. Keep in mind, ATT issued an edict that HBO step up its original programming to match Netflix, so there’s going to be a lot more original programming coming out of HBO.

I might've missed this in the details, but will this include Fox and ABC content?

Yes it does.

Disney doesn’t fit Apple’s culture

No, Apple wisely figured out they could build out their own original content for much less than the $125 billion dollars or so it would take to buy Disney, and then they wouldn't have all the baggage that would come along with absorbing another huge company. Apple will just steadily acquire the own "original" content and license or sell the other content. That's the smart long term play. When people keep arguing Apple should acquire Disney or Netflix, they don't understand the economics. Heck, Netflix is headed toward a steady decline in value as they are a one trick pony that can't afford to raise prices enough to keep up with their ever increasing costs. Someone will likely buy them at a much cheaper price in two to four years.

It's possible, but life is also getting "busier", so who has time to watch all these channels and content? Seriously!? Wait.... we all have screens in our pockets, so we can watch anywhere! Damn!

Now, as for Disney going with the "+" naming convention... trying to piggyback off of Apple? (no, Apple did not invent this, I know.... but it's their current convention, so the timing is suspect).
You know Disney announced the name of their streaming service towards the end of last year right? Apple had months to think of another name but instead they stuck with Apple TV +. On a side note, I just don’t see how Apple can be seen as a viable competitor to Disney’s streaming service when you see the size of that catalogue. It will be interesting to see who wins the streaming wars.

The problem for Apple is they will have a laughable catalogue of content compared to Disney so they either need to undercut the $6.99 a month, which is unlikely, or face years of struggling to compete. Creating content takes years and I fear Apple will eventually give up because nobody wants to pay another subscription for a service that is as limited as this will be.

Easy. Really easy. They aren't paying licensing fees. They own everything soup to nuts Licensing is why every other service has been raising the price of their offerings.

Actually, sorry to tell you both that Disney is predicting to lose money for a long time on this service. They said they will have huge losses and not turn a profit until 2024. People don't understand the economics, including the costs of a distribution network (Disney lost a BILLION dollars last year on streaming), and the costs of producing series, such as National Geographic channels, plus remember that Disney paid over $70 BILLION dollars to acquire the latest Fox assets, and the cost of that capital has to factored in.

This is why so many folks who argued that Apple should simply buy Netflix or Disney didn't understand that Apple never considered it. Paying tens of billions of dollars for a company doesn't make sense when it is cheaper for Apple to build up its own original content and license or sell the others content without the risk.

so I'll just get the obvious question out of the way: Who is gunna subscribe to both?

As long as easy to sign up and easy to sign off, both. Will watch each for one month (maybe two) a year and move on. Find this works great with the current offerings. Watch the best shows and then sign off. Repeat.;)

This is crushing for Netflix, as I predicted. Welcome to competition hell, Netflix. The big boys are here now....with money and content ready.

As annoying as it is to have 500+ streaming services I will be doing this one for sure for $6.99/month. Having the entire Disney library instantly there for my kid is Worth it alone. Then there is the amazing original Marvel and Star Wars content coming.

All Marvel movies, TV series and Lucasfilm content in one place is also pretty darn cool.

It wasn't mentioned but will this also include all Fox content as well now that Disney owns Fox? Thats crap load of movies and TV for that price.

I don't know about all Fox content, but the article from Variety states that it will include 30 seasons of The Simpsons.
