$6.99 per month is quite enticing. I was expecting $14.99 to be honest due to all the content they're planning to make available. 7,500 seperate tv series in the first year is pretty incredible for that price.

EDIT:// So I was re-reading the announcement and it appears that it's actually 7,500 episodes of shows, not 7,500 series of shows. This isn't as much as I thought and certainly fits better with the $6.99 thing.

To put the difference in perspective that's closer to 100 individual TV shows.

I had hoped for some time now that Apple would buy Disney. With the cash they threw away in stock repurchases they could have bought Disney twice over. When it comes to real entertainment assets, Disney is second to none in my humble opinion.

Don't worry $6.99 is just the bait. Once they have enough subscribers and kill off some competition. They'll switch to higher rates.

There's an error, it says $69.99 a month but it should say per year.

Looks like someone let slip their plans after they use their massive catalog to crush the competition.

Another crap service with very little of interest to me. Disney owns like 2/3 of the TV channels and they only put a few garbage channels on their service? Pass!

Maybe this article doesn't do their announcement justice, but Disney is putting content from ALL their "channels" into this service. Marvel, Star Wars, Disney Channel, National Geographic, Pixar, Disney Studios, etc. It's quite impressive. Check out the video from their investor day webcast and I think you'll be quite impressed.

Either way - don't most families or friends share an account? 69 bucks a year split between 4 family members is practically nothing for quality content. They are aiming for 60-90 million subscribers worldwide (1/3 domestic and 2/3 international) by 2024 and I think they will overachieve those numbers.

I really wonder how Apple and their own original content will fit into this equation.

It's possible, but life is also getting "busier", so who has time to watch all these channels and content? Seriously!? Wait.... we all have screens in our pockets, so we can watch anywhere! Damn!

Now, as for Disney going with the "+" naming convention... trying to piggyback off of Apple? (no, Apple did not invent this, I know.... but it's their current convention, so the timing is suspect).

It's the opposite: Disney + naming was announced prior to Apple TV +

Also - with the Disney CEO on Apple's Board of Directors, I'm sure they both knew the naming and details prior to public launches. Unless they had Iger recuse himself like they used to have Google's Schmidt do when he was on the Apple Board.

International availability?

They weren't very specific on international timing. They only stated that 2/3 of their subs would be international by 2024 and that there would be staggered but aggressive international launches in the meantime.

I thought it was just going to be their old stuff and new movies. I didn’t realize they were making a bunch of new shows. $70/year is a no brainer to get for my kids.

I pay for Amazon Prime just for shipping and rarely use the streaming. I love my Netflix subscription for all the originals. I may subscribe to HBO for a month each year to watch shows (not sure after GoT is over).

I really don’t see the need for Apple’s steaming service. I’m concerned they are going to get too involved and not have any adult content. There has already been rumors that Apple execs are getting involved in the shows. I don’t need two kid services, and I’ll be choosing Disney over Apple.

$70 for the year is a no brainer. I wonder how long it will take for them to go the Netflix rate and jump the price up though. I would have easily paid $150 for the year and not thought twice. I currently use Hulu as well and wonder what the bundle price would be..they might sucker me into ESPN+ if it's reasonable enough.

Cable is looking cheaper with all these streaming apps now.
Very true.
My DirecTV service expired few months back and I called to cancel and they out of desperation kept my package with 250 channels/DVR/some sports for $30p/m for one year. Great deal.
Cut the cord concept is nice but with all this different subscriptions/fragmentation is not worth, unless you just use one or maybe two services max.

That ‘thud’ you hear is the sound of Apple’s executive team’s jaws hitting the table after reading the price for Disney+. ;)

Knowing Apple, I’d wager they were hoping/planning on charging something in the $15-20/month. I’m aware it’s not for everyone but Disney has far more content, including arguably the most popular and sought after franchises. Apple TV+ is facing any even tougher uphill battle after this announcement, IMO.

The good news for apple is they don’t need to price it high.

They could also bury the price in a package containing news, iCloud storage, Apple Music, and maybe even apple care.

When has Apple ever led a segment by beating the competition on price? That’s not how they do business.

Apple is desperate for services income growth and pricing their new services as loss leaders isn’t going to achieve that goal. They charge $9.99 for magazine subscriptions. No chance they’ll price Apple TV+ close to Disney+.
