I had hoped for some time now that Apple would buy Disney. With the cash they threw away in stock repurchases they could have bought Disney twice over. When it comes to real entertainment assets, Disney is second to none in my humble opinion.

Disney doesn’t fit Apple’s culture

That ‘thud’ you hear is the sound of Apple’s executive team’s jaws hitting the table after reading the price for Disney+. ;)

Knowing Apple, I’d wager they were hoping/planning on charging something in the $15-20/month. I’m aware it’s not for everyone but Disney has far more content, including arguably the most popular and sought after franchises. Apple TV+ is facing any even tougher uphill battle after this announcement, IMO.

The pricing is clearly strategic and will remain till 2024 to gain traction and user and family loyalty. After 2024 it’s hard to say. Disney is clearly going for a quick hard punch to the face concerning streaming competition with so many new series releases. Disney has the history and experience with media content creation and their just re-release what was created 20-50+ years ago that alone subsidies the price over time. With the pricing and content catalogue, Disney is playing the long game while Netflix will probably be bought out or merged with Disney or Apple eventually.

It’s hard to say if Apple may succeed in this area, it all depends on the released content. CarKaraoke and Planet of the Apps does not provide a positive feeling, though I will reserve judgement as those were a learning experience.

Is the $7 with or without advertising?

Disney content advertising ;)

Not interested in “yet another platform”

Families will be for their little ones.

This! Everyone wants things but not everyone “needs” these things. People should boycott these things then action will be made when they suddenly realize they’re not getting the revenue they expected.

Cheaper to offer a streaming service compared to producing physical media, advertise, ship, stock, etc. Disney is still in that market too, eventually I see them migrating over time.

I predict piracy will become popular again as consumers grow sick and tired of these subscription services

I believe people are already tired of subscriptions. The only thing now is that how many more subscriptions is it gonna take until people start hating the whole “subscription strategy”. This is basically Cable all over again.

I thought it was just going to be their old stuff and new movies. I didn’t realize they were making a bunch of new shows. $70/year is a no brainer to get for my kids.

I pay for Amazon Prime just for shipping and rarely use the streaming. I love my Netflix subscription for all the originals. I may subscribe to HBO for a month each year to watch shows (not sure after GoT is over).

I really don’t see the need for Apple’s steaming service. I’m concerned they are going to get too involved and not have any adult content. There has already been rumors that Apple execs are getting involved in the shows. I don’t need two kid services, and I’ll be choosing Disney over Apple.
What is Adult content? Can Adults only appreciate violence, sex, drugs and deviance in their entertainment? I tire of this concept because those are the low hanging fruit. It requires far more effort and talent to engage adult audiences without the cheap thrills.

Subscription software too :p iPhone hardware subscription as well ;)

When has Apple ever led a segment by beating the competition on price? That’s not how they do business.

Apple is desperate for services income growth and pricing their new services as loss leaders isn’t going to achieve that goal. They charge $9.99 for magazine subscriptions. No chance they’ll price Apple TV+ close to Disney+.
The good news is we will find out.

People asked for a la carte. The market responded and gave them a la carte. So now it’s a problem??? It is a la carte... meaning they have a choice of which service to subscribe to. No one has to subscribe to all.

Oh the humanity, so much choice. It’s such a big and growing problem. /s

Hopefully it’s not gonna be like that in the future I know apple used to charge money for software but they would probably incorporate software price into the product. Maybe they already do that...

Now, as for Disney going with the "+" naming convention... trying to piggyback off of Apple? (no, Apple did not invent this, I know.... but it's their current convention, so the timing is suspect).
Your Apple bias is showing there. Disney announced the concept and name for the service well before Apple announced theirs. Also, Disney-owned ESPN+ has been a functional streaming service for some time now. So, no, the name and timing aren’t suspicious from Disney. If anything, Apple TV+ is the suspiciously-timing copycat.

I turn subscriptions on and off based on when new seasons of shows I like drop (or shows I liked start sucking).

At $6.99 this is a no-brainer to at least devour all the new Marvel stuff and catch up on Pixar. It’ll definitely be on Apple TV - Disney and Apple are friendly because of the Jobs connection, and that’s a lot of devices to shut out.

Don't worry $6.99 is just the bait. Once they have enough subscribers and kill off some competition. They'll switch to higher rates.

That’s what I fear but I’ll subscribe to it anyway and will cancel if that happens.

Cancel Netflix and subscribe to this and I also save a few bucks a month.

That iPhone upgrade plan is basically a subscription on hardware. Microsoft Office for tablets is subscription only.

$7 honestly isn't a bad price. Especially because there's no commitment. People may subscribe & cancel.....and resubscribe when the next season of whatever they're interested in airs.

The thing many times that's forgotten about streaming is that you a don't have to keep renewing the service monthly.

That being said, for the amount of content that this going to been this platform, I think the price is really reasonable. Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar & the classic Disney library, every Simpson season, a
Sandlot series.

The non scripted programing will include cooking shows (Be Our Chef), a show about theme park development / Imagineers, musical theater, a competition based shows for kids, etc.

DC Universe launched with a fraction of that & cost $7.99. Boomerang has a limited selection & cost $4.99 (this is $2 more)

All in all, I'd subscribe to this...at least for a couple of months.

Hello Disney+, see you later Netflix and LOL at Apple
This is getting out of control. Subscriptions for everything.

Yes but very easy to mitigate. Pay for a streaming service with content you want, binge watch it for a month or two and move on. Rinse, wash, repeat. If you’re a cord cutter you pick a single live TV streaming service and pay for that each month then have a rotating streaming service that you change each month or two while you binge watch the content you want. It’s just a different model that requires some planning but can still save you a lot of money. There’s no need to have more than two active month to month streaming service subscriptions at the same time.
