Listen, I consider myself a capitalist but man oh man something's gotta give.

Yes, your wallet, my wallet, our wallets...

UNLESS... the collective of consumers as a group decides the value is not worth the price hike. If everyone refuses to pay more, the price hike will be "delayed for further analysis" or similar. The problem with our system- capitalism- is that consumers as a group may gripe- sometimes loudly- but they then just pay. In doing so, they reward all sellers for raising prices & profit. From the sellers perspective, they did a great thing because the market voted with their wallets and paid up. Bonuses earned. Record revenue from streaming reporting. Stock price goes up. It's all "win!" for the sellers when consumers just pay more.

The key to capitalism actually working correctly is the balance of sellers trying to get as much as they can and buyers demanding the most for the least possible price... with the latter holding the ultimate card to play if any seller gets too greedy: the power of "NO!" Unfortunately, for the last decade or two, the consumer side of the equation seems to have forgotten that immense power, opting to just roll over almost every time.

As long as "we" (as a group) keep doing that, expect prices to just keep rising... not so much because of terms like inflation or wars or climate change or shipping or pandemics... but simply because we just pay. If we ever choose to not "just pay" (as a group), sellers will BEND (first) because they desperately need the revenue more than "we" should need the non-essential stuff for sale.

And people laugh at me for buying Blu-Ray… I have every Disney title I’ll ever want and won’t have to pay Disney for them again or watch any annoying ads to enjoy them.
Exactly. I started buying disney blu-rays over 10 years ago and have almost everything I want (except maybe some new ones). Plus you get a bonus of having higher quality video and audio. This price increase definitely justifies me buying even more discs :)

There’s nothing to watch

…and I just renewed my annual a week or so ago. 🥳 Just wait to see who else raises their prices “just because” in the next week

Looks like it's goodbye Disney+ after my year is up. Disney+ will be $109.99 annually, up 37.5%. Besides, if Apple gets NFL games, my money will go there.

You seem to be thinking Apple will spend the fortune for exclusive rights to Sunday Ticket and then not Apple profiteer that asset.

Think of it this way: did original Direct TV, then whoever bought them, then AT&T demand margins as high as Apple's for the TV service? And how much did Sunday Ticket cost as a service from those lower target margin players? Now think about Apple holding that exclusive lock. Is Apple not going to ask for AT LEAST as much as the historical fee for ST? And if that doesn't hit Apple's margin target, is it really hard to imagine them demanding even more?

Even if Apple leaves ST at its historical "extra" fee, that will leave $110/yr in the dust. 2021 ST was just shy of $300. I don't know if that had Apple's margin in it or not. I would guess NOT. Is Apple's exclusive on ST going to be $400/season? $500/season? At what price will it give Apple what it wants for bothering with it?

With all these companies raising their prices, pretty soon we will be paying more than we used to pay for cable back in the day.
The beauty of the current model is you're not stuck in a contract. Just pay monthly to watch something you like, and then stop the subscription until there's another show that you're interested. Rinse and repeat.

The price of the ad-free plan is increasing to $10.99 per month because Disney is also launching a new ad-supported tier that will be available for $7.99 per month.
I think the wording of this is not accurate. Because is cause and effect, and Disney choosing to raise prices has nothing to do with them launching an ad-supported tier.

Maybe "and" would be more appropriate than "because".

just curious if they will have some newer format and people will have to jump again.
People choose to "jump again", they don't have to.

DVD quality is fine for many people, especially given certain type of content. Plus for remastered content, the DVD version is sometimes better than the Bluray version, a good example is Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Don't know how much longer I can justify paying for a Disney+ subscription. It's the least used out of all my streaming services, and I pretty much only keep it around to watch the exclusive Star Wars and MCU shows.😐

the ad included version should be cheaper than what the ad-free version was. All they are doing is double dipping, charging and then including ads while jacking up the price for the ad-free version.

Wonder if VZW will kick subscribers down to Ad Tier or totally abandon the perk
Wonder what verizon actually pays for that for their customers? I know they aren't paying close to the full price, but seems like if they do you will see a lot of people switching their plans.

Wow, glad I signed up for Disney+ yearly not a couple weeks ago. Hulu was already too expensive for me, and I think it’s time to chop it now.

With streaming services raising their prices and content being spread out throughout one of a dozen services, the call of the seven seas grows even stronger.

Or, to put it in Disney terms, "Yo ho, yo ho..."

Except those unskippable anti-piracy ads you have to sit through every time you watch.
This was the final nail for physical media for me. I'd rather pay subscription services and when I press Play, the movie/show plays, not having to wait for unskippable warnings and trailers.

Streaming services have become so fragmented, cable TV is getting cheaper by the day.

Except for now you are paying for/maintaining a storage array.
There are tradeoff for everything, but when it comes to the SW side of things, there are free options. The options that cost money could be well worth it to some.

I have the lifetime Plex Pass, and before that, I used iTunes and the Computer app. The Computer app is free, but I think Plex is well worth it, especially the lifetime Plex Pass.

It will eventually pay for itself versus paying for streaming, especially for people the rewatch the same content over and over. I personally know multiple that are paying for Peacock for only The Office. I got the first 7 seasons of The Office on DVD for only $5 total at a yard sale.

A small investment could pay off in the long run.

Disney+ felt surprisingly cheap at its beginning price, but now that we had that low price as a baseline, this feels like it's an excessive increase. I'm glad I'm not a Disney fan.

There are too many streaming services and too many price increases to keep track of now. I gotta say, there's a lot more content available now though than when it was just Netflix and Hulu.
