So which one of these analyst did this info come from?

hmmm this ipad mini with retina will be a day one purchase for me and I usually hold off on anything iPad related til maybe a couple months out of the product cycle

I'm totally happy with my non retina iPad mini thank you very much. Transferred my unlimited AT&T data plan to it from my original iPad, and have zero desire to upgrade.

Um...Of course...as soon as I see the ipad retina, I'll probably want one. Lol.

As far as the double release rumors? I think it'll be either the 2nd half of this year OR the first quarter of NEXT year.....not BOTH.

They're obviously just guessing. Cause ain't no way Apple is gonna trumpet the long delayed retina iPad mini and then trot out an upgrade to it a couple of months later. Makes NO sense. I think Apple is just covering their bases to avoid another fiasco like they had with the new thinner iMac last year.

If they can't meet meet demand for the retina ipad mini at the end of this year, they'll just release it in the first quarter of 2014. IMHO

The monkey in the middle. Lol.

They learned their lesson by bringing out an update right after (the 4)...they got a lot of flak from users.

Apart from a few posters on a message board, I doubt got any flak at all. Most people were happy to have a new iPad released so soon.

Apple is not going to delay new technology because of a small group of complainers.

People are furious because analysts just make stuff up so often--and I agree.

In this case, though, they're making up low-hanging fruit: 2014 retina Mini is probably true, and we don't need insider reports to make that be a very good guess. These things take time to solve:

Display power consumption
GPU power consumption (to drive 4x the pixels)
Battery capacity vs. device thickness and weight
Cost (on a device that is already low margin for Apple)
Display panel yields

All of those problems have to be solved. And you can't say "use the lightweight technology of the iPhone 5" because the Mini is ALREADY in that generation. (The full-size iPad is not--and when it gets lighter, IF it gets light enough, then it may be enough of a "retina Mini" to tide some buyers over. It's not as if the competition is putting retina displays into a metal-shell tablet as light and thin as a Mini.)

It is obvious that a retina is coming. When the Iphone 4 came out with a retina display and the ipad didn't have one, you knew the iPad was next to get one. So now it is the mini's turn. I think the mini with a retina display will be the top seller of the non mac group.

With the margins as low as they are for the mini I am not sure how Retina will work price wise.

The whole 2 release iPad mini does not make sense, clearly it is going to be one or the other, if Apple can clean up manufactoring issues with retina mini displays expect it Q4, but if not the mini will be updated Q1 2014.

Or maybe my theory there will be a normal ipad mini released with spec bump (a6) in Q3, then q1 a ipad mini with retina display released alongside the non-retina mini ($399) the margins on the mini point to something like this happening.

It still doesn't make sense to me that people got pissed because they accelerated their upgrade cycle a bit. They'll put out the best iPad Mini they can at that price point in the fall, and if they can put out a better one at the same price point in the first part of 2014 they'll do that too. There's no sense holding back tech just because Apple users expect their device to be the best Apple device on the market for a full year.

Using your logic they can put out a better one now at the same price point in the first part of the year with better tech specs.

Then this fall, they release the Retina version.

Soooo then why haven't they updated the Mini now?

You need to get out more from the forums. There was plenty of press, articles, etc from all the tech sites about an updated model that fast.

Agreed, but having called it the 'mini' they dare not make it bigger or heavier. So they need new battery technology and/or less-thirsty screen components. If they can manage that without significantly increasing the price I think they will sell at twice the rate of the first one. Just my thoughts. ;)

"We see two refreshes coming. One in the second half of this year, then one in Q1 [first quarter] of 2014," analyst Richard Shim told CNET late Sunday night.

"The Q1 [2014] device will have a Retina display plus an updated processor," Shim added.

But surely any update to the mini to add retina display will require an upgraded processor and gpu in order to drive the pixel count.

So why would they release another cpu upgrade 3 months later.

Seriously do analysts actually use logic at all in their formulations ?

love it ....

DAE HATE ANALYSTS??!!!! :apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple:

We've turned into /r/circlejerk now? I'm okay with this.

They really need to eliminate that curviness from the back. It doesn't dig into your hand properly like the iPhone does.

The bevel on the front, however, is magical. I bet that Apple uses only the finest available diamonds to do that.

/s

You might be joking, but I actually like the way the iPhone digs into your hand a little bit.

the new iPad Mini Pro sports a supersized 27" display pixelcount in a 7.9" device

cramming pixels was never crammier

"inflatable"?

No Retina display, no iPad Mini for me.:(

No A6 no mini for me.
I already have an Ipad 2 A5//512Mb...so.
I don't think we will see Ipad's update till next fall and
for that
Mini will sport A6//Retina
and
Ipad5 will sport Quad (A6 or A7) and new design.

Apple is back to their old timetables of product releases (Jobs-era). This report has me wanting to wait til Q1-14 to buy an iPad mini. I have a 1st-Gen iPad 32GB I'd like to sell...
