DisplayMate Rates iPhone 5 Screen as "Best Smartphone Display" They've Seen

I personally don't care who's phone is better, really. I just know that I like the products that Apple puts out. It's like some kind of contest to some of you... But hey if u are a apple fan or a fandroid then that's you. Love your product of choice, but it shouldn't be competitive. This is how they make money off of us!

I can say for myself, the only thing I liked about android were all the free apps and the customizing of font, widgets and wall papers. But each time I tried to go to a Android device, there was always this lag. My recent try was before SGIII, I tried the SGII. It was HORRIBLE. The sensor to blacken the screen never worked when I received phone calls, so I would constantly hang up on people. There was a lag from turning the device vertical to horizontal. It just wasn't as sharp as my iphone. So I had to return it. Plus I'm a girl with small hands and the phone was way to ginormous, I couldn't text with one hand... Always needed to use both hands to text.

I'm happy with my purchase of ip5. I love the screen length since I can still text with one hand ;)

I have to say that I noticed a real difference in the colour display of the iPhone 5. It is seriously impressive.

Could that be due to the fact that Macrumors is no where near being objective? Could that be due to posting major biased news?

Why would you expect a Mac-centric website to not have some kind of bias towards, erm, Macs and Apple products?

If you can still find some. Get yourself a piece of overhead projector transparency film and cut it to fit the screen.

No, it won't affect the retina display but it will reorient the polarization of the screen so you can see the i5 with your glasses on.

I've had to do this for a few gps devices.

What kind of ******** is this now? You cant "reorient" the polarization as you call it, there is no such a film that can do it unless you want to lose even more luminosity. Imagine polarizers like the blinders we use in out office and place them in the windows but in the molecular level.
All this guy needs do is replace his sunglasses, because polarized sunglasses are generally a bad idea since there are now polarized LCD screens everywhere.

That may be overstating it a bit. We knew there would be improvements. It's just that the long, skinny screen is a misfire. Yeah, it's a great phone. It's just that it could have been phenomenal.

But it IS phenomenal. Just because it isn't wider and doesn't have a teardrop form factor doesn't mean it isn't phenomenal. The speed, thinness, lightness, cameras, audio quality, aluminum durability, iOS 6 etc make for a great phone.

Apple always refines refines refines until they are ready for another game changing feature/product.

"Subjective" and "fatuous" are two adjectives missing from the article's headline. There is little accuracy behind the review, but it's better than nothing.

Is it just me or has the Macrumors user base shifted to adolescent males that still think they are in a pissing contest?

Could that be due to the fact that Macrumors is no where near being objective? Could that be due to posting major biased news?

I am so pissed off by these stupid claims combined with stupid other claims

i.e. iP5 screen is better than SG3 screen -> opinion shifts to it's the best screen on the planet

Clearly the HTC One X and the LG Optimus 4X HD offer better screens than the SG3 and are no vaporware (e.g. Lumia 820 and 920). And good journalism would be to point out that you are stacking up a Pentile-matrix against a RGB-Matrix.

RGB is better? Wow - really? Should buy this software to find that out...and yes...that's why the whole report of this thing sucks.

Really - this community is absolutely retarded. Had a nice time here before iOS hit...alas that's over. :(

Looks like you joined when iOS hit :p

I had a look at one next to my iPhone 4 yesterday, and was amazed at the difference. Not sure how much of that difference is between 4>4S and how much is between 4S>5, but either way it was night and day. Which is pretty incredible considering how much amazing the 4 looked compared to the 3GS.

I've seen S3's over people's shoulders and certainly thought they looked brighter than the iPhone, but kind of almost too bright. But the 5 looked amazing. Also compared the front Face Time cameras and again the difference was incredible - the front camera has for me always been the weakest part of the iPhone, and iPad. Bumping it up here it now displays bright video images that look accurate rather than dull, look like you're in a dark cupboard you get on the 4. (And that was in a bright phone store!)

The extra height will definitely make a difference - for example one of the things I've always found slightly fiddle is scrolling the list of events at the bottom when you have the calendar in month view. With four rather than two its far better.

Might have to wait til next year though, as I can't really justify buying one now, plus its probably worth waiting to see what happens with LTE / 4G here in the UK.

What do you mean one of your favorites? How many favorites do you get?

It's an expression, are u clueless? It doesn't mean I have two favorites that would be impossible. And it doesn't mean since I had one favorite I'm locked into that favorite for the rest of my life. It simply means the new phone is quickly becoming my favorite iPhone I have owned.

So apparently there are companies other than SAMSUNG who can produce excellent screens; this must be music to Apple's ears! :)

Wouldn't be surprised if the Lumia 920 screen smokes the iphone 5, just as it does with the camera in tests.

I guess if Apple posts a big ad showing how the iPhone 5 beats the Lumia 920 in a bunch of areas, some ridiculously stupid (Has iCloud... Doesn't has iCloud!) then you'll have the same thing.

By your response I can tell you haven't really used an Android.
Plus if you watched the video I posted instead of just sounding super biased you would see some pretty good INNOVATION.

I've used an "Android", I have a Nexus 7. I find it quite innovative how they've figured out how to make a quad core 1.2+ Ghz device lag while resizing in the stock web browser. I'm sorry but if you can't even get the basic usability of the device down, who cares if you can press the play button on a widget vs tapping an app first (I actually like iOS's system wide music controls better too if you just want to resume the last playing app).

Whats with all the phone bashing lately? Do you people really like, see someone carrying an S3 and think " his phone sucks, he's probably poor and afraid of my opinion "?

It's not that I might have a better phone, it's that mine has to absolutely destroy yours so I can feel like a member of the Apple club.

I'm probably going to be getting an iPhone 5. It's a good update, and it'll make Maps, like, a quarter of the way useful. Maybe. But you know what I'm not gonna be doing after I get it? Running around screaming OLOL SUCK IT FANNNDRROOOIIIDDSS MY PHONE IS EXACTLY 1.000344535352 BETTER THAN YOURS HERES A REVIEW! :apple:

...case in point. I have an iPhone 4 and an iPad 3, and I see it hitch and lag for a split second all over the place while browsing the web. Yet I'm not going on sites screaming that this half second lag totally kills usability.

While I admit there are other great phones out there. The iPhone5 certainly isn't playing catch up. At least on the hardware side of things.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/6324/the-iphone-5-performance-preview

You mean, the tests that benchmark ICS, which is far slower than JB? You realize JB google devices benchmark MUCH higher. That's how we know that the Galaxy S III's quad core is actually faster than the A6.

The iPhone is a good phone. Its the best optimized due to hardware/software packaging control. Is it the best out there hardwarewise? I don't think so, but it also depends on what you're looking for. If its the most powerful CPU, the answer is no. If its most powerful CPU in conjunction for energy unit, the answer is, probably.

Just these threads are so full of non-truths (ICS is so a few days ago...JB was released to compete with the iPhone 5) its amusing. All the sudden, Apple fans simply can't take the fact that the iPhone 4S ended up lagging in the end (sorry, it did) hardware wise and have abandoned the argument that existed in Steve Jobs's time: Its not the hardware, its how you use it.

Turns out, an extra Hz speed here matters to Apple fans now.

Well my screen looks lovely but it's not accurate, it IS yellow/green tinted and many times to me it looks "off" compared to my iPhone 4. As well as comparing (as I expect the 4 is slightly blue tinted) I decided to measure it...

Now, when are Apple going to either give me the option to calibrate my colours without Jailbreaking or do I have to go and try to get a replacement?

P.S. - Blame Apple for the crappy pic, if they hadn't purposely put a downgraded camera in the iPad 2 (compared to iPhone) then it would be better... :)

If it didn't suck in portrait mode when viewed with polarized sunglasses, then it would have to suck in landscape mode. Polarized sunglasses are primarily used for driving. Most standalone GPS units are used in landscape mode. So the design is likely intended to support the phone's use as a GPS the way that the majority of people use a GPS.

I wonder if Candurin's idea would work for you.

The fact I can use portrait mode with Polarized sunglasses was a big deal to me. Thanks for pointing that out.:D

I do not disagree with all of your points but I have got to tell you that while you're calling the community retarded, you're bitching about MacRumors reporting on Apple news and being biased. You don't see the irony in that at all? Why would they post a favorable article on some other non-Apple related device? Maybe I am wrong but I don't read the articles here and think, "gee, I wonder why they don't mention how awesome the SGS3 is..." If I was less than biased news I run over to a variety of other well known tech sites.

I do agree that you cannot pit Pentile-matrix against RGB-matrix. To me it is like saying a standard 3.5 hard drive is better because it is bigger than an SSD. Now that's a truly lame statement. The point is, I get where you're coming from but if you want unbiased news from the tech world this is not the place to go. This will always lean towards any Apple product, which is not a bad thing but it is just how it is. I would imaging you read the news and I would hope that in similar form you do not acquire your news from merely one source and call it fact.

Must be another example of a company being paid off by evil Apple to falsify tests to improve Apple's image. Good old Samsung/Google just doesn't have the money or lack of morals to keep this from happening. No way Apple could actually be as good as so many people say they are.
