when they compare to a product that doesnt have a low quality display? Comparing a top qualkity LCD to a pentile AMOLED display, and coming up with a verdict that hte LCD is better. really? did they actually require testing to tell us this astounding fact?

The Samsung display is pretty damn average. The HTC display is much nicer, but they also dont sell well, compared to apple or samsung.

How about getting a new ipod touch and telling us about that display.

The new iPod touch uses the same display is the iPhone5.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Lumia 920 screen smokes the iphone 5, just as it does with the camera in tests.

Both phones have good displays. While iPhone display has somewhat better specs in some categories, they are close for the most part. There is only one category where the difference in the specs is huge. It's a contrast ratio. Here SGSIII is still better almost two orders of magnitude (45,000 vs 1,356). Nothing surprising here. While one can argue which colors are more accurate, it's hard to argue that display without black color (iPhone) is really competitive.

Also, some of the claims in DM review are border line ridiculous. For example, they say this about SGSIII "Gamut Too Large 139 percent of Std (sRGB / Rec.709 is the color standard for most content and needed for accurate color reproduction. Note that Too Large a Color Gamut is visually
worse than Too Small.)"

That's just plain incorrect. All people who do photo editing know that wide color gamut monitors are much better (and much more expensive). Wide gamut means that display can reproduce more colors. How to use them is a different story. Some monitors provide special mode (narrowing the gamut) to render sRGB content when used with applications that can't handle color profiles properly.

Besides, the talk about accurate color reproduction on phone displays in general is not than meaningful given the fact that apparently none of the Mobile OSes does color management. Those interested can get more information here.

So they compare it to one phone? The Lumia 900 kills thr iphone 5 screen and the 920 is even better than that and is right around the corner. Source: http://blog.gsmarena.com/apple-ipho...a-920-has-its-most-advanced-title-taken-away/

It may be a great screen on the Nokia. But the link you posted isn't a review. And is incredibly dishonest.

They're taking a press release from Nokia, and comparing it to the iPhone5... And their comparison doesn't include any in-depth data on the iPhone display. Mostly guesses (eg refresh rate).

Wonder what kind of Display might be on the "Apple TV"...

I'm sure the "Apple TV" will be at least as good as most other TVs. I wish I could say the same about the MacBook Pro. The MBP has a mirror-like screen that is very poor compared to my 1980's vintage Toshiba.

I think when there is stiff competition Apple does well but because all the PCs are going bottom dollar Apple must feel no need to make the MBP screen better. But like I said every TV set has a better screen than the MBP so I think that will push Apple to make pretty good TV screens even if their current line of larger LCDs is "mirror-like"

By your response I can tell you haven't really used an Android. The widgets are amazing. I like to listen to music all the time so instead of having to launch and app I just press play on my widget. Also I don't have to go to a messages app to see/reply to text messages. I just look at the widget. Plus when Siri is giving bad information who would trust her....

Plus if you watched the video I posted instead of just sounding super biased you would see some pretty good INNOVATION.

You totally missed the android forums by like 3 exits. You must be using ios6 maps ;)

By your response I can tell you're biased and haven't really used an iPhone lately. Or a jail broken one for that matter. Go ahead and tell me yeah you have to jailbreak to get certain features. Just as bad as having install custom mods to make your device run on the latest update.

Replying without having to go to messages can also be done after simple jailbreak, but I don't mind going to the messaging screen, to see what was said before.

Again without unlocking the phone either tell it to play a song or playlist, or double click home button and touch play. No need to open an App.

Between this report, the performance benchmarks, and drop tests… it looks like Apple really nailed it with this hardware release. Thinner, lighter, stronger, faster, better looking screen… Great stuff. I was one of the people criticising the new design (specifically the two-toned back) when it was first leaked… but I'll gladly retract any negativity in light of all these very impressive reports.

I'm too smart this time. I made the mistake on iPhone 4 leak and ate a crow. Now I just shut up. LOL.

That is the one thing that bums me out about it. iOS is boring and just adding features that have been on Android for years. Whoa you mean you finally have turn by turn navigation and panorama pictures. I had both of those on my Samsung Galaxy (yes the very first model.) The only thing new is now I don't have to open that actual Starbucks app to order a coffee, instead open apples app.

Apple have an app store with over 700.000 apps. Yes, most of apps probably are usless for an individual (subjective thing) but there has allways been an app that does something that was possible on android. I had pano that does panorama on my iphone lot better then i could do it on samsung galaxy S2 that i had for several months. You see, i have tried both.... android and iOS. I have come to the conclusion that the less customizable iOS does much more and in a better way then android for me. So for myself iOS is great OS that have room for improvment, but is a bit away from a boring OS.

Didn't read the article, but did they compare to other smartphones than the GS3? Like the One X? I've never seen the One X screen but have heard from most it's better than the GS3 and 4S, so I'd be interested to see how te 5 compares to that.

I'm loving this competition. Can't wait for the GS4 and then for the 5S to up it, and so on. Exciting stuff!

I literally LOL'd and wrote down this phrase... Thank you!

Glad I could make you laugh. I find it so funny how heated people get over a glorified toy. Dont get me wrong Ilove my Apple devices but their only devices. If it loses a benchmark or gets a bad review my life goes on..lol

In many ways, OLED is better. It's just that pentile matrix is a failure. Propery display calibration on full RGB OLED screens drastically improve color saturation accuracy. IPS LCD is still the way to go for now, but next year, Samsung will be giving us real HD OLED screens.

strange, I have seen this exact quote before.

Besides, the talk about accurate color reproduction on phone displays in general is not than meaningful given the fact that apparently none of the Mobile OSes does color management. Those interested can get more information here.

The test explains its findings:

"If you want to see accurate colors in photos, videos, and all standard consumer content the display needs to closely match the Standard Color Gamut that was used to produce the content, which is called sRGB / Rec.709. A display with a larger Color Gamut cannot show colors that are not in the original content - it just exaggerates and distorts the colors. Most of the recent generation LCD Smartphones have Color Gamuts around 60 percent of the Standard Gamut, which produces somewhat subdued colors. The iPhone 4 has a 64 percent Color Gamut, but the new iPad pulled way ahead and has a virtually perfect 99 percent of the Standard Color Gamut. The iPhone 5 has an almost identical Color Gamut to the new iPad and the Viewing Tests confirm its excellent color accuracy."

Larger color gamut = clipping/color compression. The closer to standard color gamut, the less clipping.
That is the reason for larger gamut problem with Mobile OS.

As you pointed, no Mobile OS is color managed ( it's a phone not an image editing work station) so the above explanation addresses those limitations.

And the most relevant feature is the interface, where Apple is the master. As with the Mac, iPad, iPod and iPhone.

I'm curious why they didn't choose a more appropriate comparison such as the fantastic screen in the HTC One X. But then again, given the HOX sales would that have garnered the same amount of page hits. The GS3 is a great phone, but the screen was pretty much universally reviewed as a disappointment.

LOL, as the SIII got its pants dropped by the i5, users are now using their back up plan the Lumina 920 a NOKIA. Which double kills the SIII.

Give up, your SIII just got bum raped.

The quality of comments on this article are really depressing.

Is it just me or has the Macrumors user base shifted to adolescent males that still think they are in a pissing contest?

Could that be due to the fact that Macrumors is no where near being objective? Could that be due to posting major biased news?

I am so pissed off by these stupid claims combined with stupid other claims

i.e. iP5 screen is better than SG3 screen -> opinion shifts to it's the best screen on the planet

Clearly the HTC One X and the LG Optimus 4X HD offer better screens than the SG3 and are no vaporware (e.g. Lumia 820 and 920). And good journalism would be to point out that you are stacking up a Pentile-matrix against a RGB-Matrix.

RGB is better? Wow - really? Should buy this software to find that out...and yes...that's why the whole report of this thing sucks.

Really - this community is absolutely retarded. Had a nice time here before iOS hit...alas that's over. :(

Fantastic screens for creatives to showcase their work.

Since the arrival of Retina displays it has been a real pleasure to show my photography portfolio in such crisp and vibrant screens.

Whether on the iPhone or iPad now I have my work ready to be displayed everywhere I go.

=)
