I think people misses the point. To Samsung's credit they have been able to iterate their OLED tech every 6 months or so. The pace of these improvement is staggering, although the price aren't cheap. At this moment it is likely we have smart phone display that is even better then those professional monitors.

Apart from possible BT.2020 colour space, I just dont see any more "quality" improvement to be made. We now need it to be even more energy efficient, last longer without colour shift, and cheaper.

I’m surprised they don’t apply it to their TV lineups... but they’re pushing LCD limits pretty hard too.

You’re right. I don’t think some people truly understand how expensive a “tv size” display of this caliber would cost. It’s much easier to put an insanely performing display in a phone that’s only 6” or whatever. That same display at 49” would be cost-prohibitive.

I had the founds to buy an Iphone X but when I say that Ugly screen.... with that ugly missing part of the screen on the top. So I decided to stay with the 7Plus.

Samsung does make incredible HW.
The only problem is that stupid Android which I cannot seem to get along with and the SW Upgrade strategies.

I am a huge Apple fan but there is a limit to stupidity and ignorance - Samsung is on pair with Apple on the high end phones (hardware wise).

This is great news. Hopefully, this OLED tech will trickle down faster than it has. I'm ready for a 65 inch OLED TV that costs less that $1500!

The only thing that I get from this is that the display and camera ratings groups are going to have to come up with new standards that lower the scores again. Every flagship phone on the planet will have top ratings for camera and display in the next couple of years with the current approach. They'll all be considered "perfect".

To be fair, they used this exact phrase to describe the iPhone X.

Which begs the question how much closer to perfect can "visually indistinguishable from perfect" be?

Look how stupid the S9 looks next to the iPhone X with those disgusting bezels.

I’ll take the bezel over the notch any day.

At some point they effectively will be, but that won't prevent the tech companies from pursuing meaningless improvements in specs that cannot be perceived by humans. #400000000000K_HD

I think the ratings are in perceptive to what's already out. So the ratings will not go up, but phones will lose their ratings over the years as newer models top them.

I just came to read the comments where people that don't have an iPhoneX came in here to say "notch".

Again, without owning an iPhoneX.

I bought two actually because unfortunately the only way to have iMessage is to have an iPhone

I’ve been told on these very fora that people sometimes buy the best of the worst. So it could be people “hate” the notch but buy the phone anyway. So it’s not as clear cut as you make it out to be.

You missed the point. Apple has a good return policy. Buy one, try it, and return it if you don’t like it. This applies to the iPhone X with the notch, the MBP with the new keyboard some people don’t like or the HomePod. Complaining without trying something sounds like my kids and food:

“Eat your veggies please.”
“I don’t like them.”
“Have you tried them?”
“No. I just know I won’t like them.”

None of what any of the three of you said is mutually exclusive with what I said.

Note: I said "people." I didn't say "all people."

Still smiling about those notch nonsense. I wonder if they got that upset when they developed a notch in their trousers as well. Come on, grow up... and be proud of your notch! I am anyway.

I was thinking the same thing. They called the iPhone screen perfect but now there’s one better than perfect... I’m going to assume there’s different levels of perfection.

The iPhone does indeed look better than the S9.

To be fair I without a hiccup hate iOS 11 and more importantly the iPhone X's notch. I really did not want to buy $1,250 phones that the keyboard disappears in the messaging app and even worse the app just crashing all together.

The screen-to-body ratio on iPhone X is about 82.9%. The “all-screen” iPhone is 17.1% not-screen. The screen-to-body ratio on Samsung’s Galaxy S9 is 84.2%.

It's somewhat hard to directly compare them. Do these numbers take the "notch" into account as it eats some of the screen real-estate? And when it comes to Galaxy S-series its also somewhat difficult as part of the display is in the curve on the sides, so you are counting screen real-estate that is pretty much useless in practice as it can't contain any meaningful information, touch-elements or anything and pretty much everything displayed on these edges gets distorted and is really sensitive to light as you get reflections where the curve starts so easily.

uh the S9 like the S8 before has no bezels on the longest sides meaning more than 3/4 of the screen is bezel-less. The X has a distinct bezel 100% all the way around the screen. iPhone X bezel-less, fake news indeed.

I'm sure it's a fine display but did anyone else notice that the X screen is substantially brighter in all conditions? Especially when it matters ie home screen and full screen content. Excluding high ambient light mode which is not intended for regular use for many reasons.

Whichever phone has the better display - the one thing the iPhone X has done is started a shift away from horribly oversaturated OLED displays!

Which, no matter what badge your phone has, can only be a good thing.

I'm not "embracing" it - but I really don't see how it matters. Once you've used the phone for a few days, you don't notice it. At all.

The vast majority of people who moan about the notch are those who don't own one.

Your choice is notch or bezel... Personally now that apps are embracing the ears on the X, that area is becoming useful. Where it could just be black bezel...

Status bar is not as useful as it used to be. And I still cannot unsee the notch.

To all the Notch adepts claiming the Notch is notching bad and will hardly be notchiced:
What actually did you win with it - and with the bunch of Rabbit®️ ears ?

A brand new phone has better specs than phone 4 months old? Wowser.

I don’t think that’s necessarily a given tho

Since Apple calibration and Samsung supplied panels was a good combo

Iirc many galaxy models are not accurately calibrated whereas the s9 is supposedly
“Indistinguishable” from completely accurate. It’s prolly a beaut!

And still an achievement, things could’ve easily not gone well like an LG Mobile caliber quality Panel used or bad calibration or both
[doublepost=1519922022][/doublepost]
And the iPhone XI will no doubt beat the S9? That’s the idea of new technology

Will it tho?

Might be an X-S with same panel as X, XPlus with an LG like panel that’s iffy, and another LED based model in the rumored flavor of 6.1”

Obligatory Spinal Tap quote:

" it's like how much more black could this be? And the answer is none. None more black."
